Book Synopsis Human Rights as Politics and Idolatry by : Michael Ignatieff
Download or read book Human Rights as Politics and Idolatry written by Michael Ignatieff and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-28 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Ignatieff draws on his extensive experience as a writer and commentator on world affairs to present a penetrating account of the successes, failures, and prospects of the human rights revolution. Since the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, this revolution has brought the world moral progress and broken the nation-state's monopoly on the conduct of international affairs. But it has also faced challenges. Ignatieff argues that human rights activists have rightly drawn criticism from Asia, the Islamic world, and within the West itself for being overambitious and unwilling to accept limits. It is now time, he writes, for activists to embrace a more modest agenda and to reestablish the balance between the rights of states and the rights of citizens. Ignatieff begins by examining the politics of human rights, assessing when it is appropriate to use the fact of human rights abuse to justify intervention in other countries. He then explores the ideas that underpin human rights, warning that human rights must not become an idolatry. In the spirit of Isaiah Berlin, he argues that human rights can command universal assent only if they are designed to protect and enhance the capacity of individuals to lead the lives they wish. By embracing this approach and recognizing that state sovereignty is the best guarantee against chaos, Ignatieff concludes, Western nations will have a better chance of extending the real progress of the past fifty years. Throughout, Ignatieff balances idealism with a sure sense of practical reality earned from his years of travel in zones of war and political turmoil around the globe. Based on the Tanner Lectures that Ignatieff delivered at Princeton University's Center for Human Values in 2000, the book includes two chapters by Ignatieff, an introduction by Amy Gutmann, comments by four leading scholars--K. Anthony Appiah, David A. Hollinger, Thomas W. Laqueur, and Diane F. Orentlicher--and a response by Ignatieff.
Book Synopsis Social Justice Instruction by : Rosemary Papa
Download or read book Social Justice Instruction written by Rosemary Papa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-22 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource offers instructors a full palette of strategies for teaching social justice concepts across subject areas from kindergarten through college. Dividing its content between elementary, adolescent, and adult learners, the book analyzes the classroom experience as a powerful means of challenging stereotypes and supporting inclusion, respect, and equity. History, language arts, literature, and social studies, as well as mathematics and science are shown as platforms for tying critical thinking to moral behavior. And while professional development underlies all chapters in the text, special areas such as technology, curriculum design, recognizing student demographics, and raising social justice awareness in school culture are spotlighted. Among the topics covered: Reframing social justice for the adult learner. The politics of “being”: faculty of color teaching social justice in the college classroom. Stories of social justice from the kindergarten classroom. Critical literacy and multicultural literature. The shaming: creating a curriculum that promotes socially-responsible online engagement. Literacy is a civil write: the art, science, and soul of transformative classrooms. For educators and education researchers involved in the field, Social Justice Instruction unlocks the potential for imparting progressive ideas along the educational spectrum. The strategies here model a humanist perspective that will serve learners both in and outside the classroom.

Book Synopsis Nigerian Pentecostalism and Development by : Richard Burgess
Download or read book Nigerian Pentecostalism and Development written by Richard Burgess and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the contributions, both intentional and unintentional, of Nigerian Pentecostal churches and NGOs to development, studying their development practices broadly in relation to the intersecting spheres of politics, economics, health, education, human rights, and peacebuilding. In sub-Saharan Africa, Pentecostalism is fast becoming the dominant expression of Christianity, but while the growth and civic engagement of these churches has been well documented, their role in development has received less attention. The Nigerian Pentecostal landscape is one of the most vibrant in Africa. Churches are increasingly assuming more prominent roles as they seek to address the social and moral ills of contemporary society, often in fierce competition with Islam for dominance in Nigerian public space. Some scholars suggest that the combination of an enchanted worldview, an emphasis on miracles and prosperity teaching, and a preoccupation with evangelism discourages effective political engagement and militates against development. However, Nigerian Pentecostalism and Development argues that there is an emerging movement within contemporary Nigerian Pentecostalism which is becoming increasingly active in development practices. This book goes on to explore the increasingly transnational approach that churches take, often seeking to build multicultural congregations around the globe, for instance in Britain and the United States. Nigerian Pentecostalism and Development: Spirit, Power, and Transformation will be of considerable interest to scholars and students concerned with the intersection between religion and development, and to development practitioners and policy-makers working in the region.

Book Synopsis A Fair Globalization by : World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization
Download or read book A Fair Globalization written by World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization and published by International Labour Organization. This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report has been compiled by the World Commission on the Social Dimensions of Globalization, an independent body established by the International Labour Organization (ILO) in 2002, and whose membership includes international politicians and government advisers from developed and developing countries, academics and representatives of business and multinational corporations, trade unions and civil society organisations. The report explores the social dimensions of globalisation and the need to build a fair and inclusive global economic system, and argues that the dominant perspective on globalisation must shift from a narrow focus on markets to encompass a broader recognition of the needs of people in the communities in which they live. Issues highlighted and recommendations made in the report include: better governance and accountability at both national and international levels to foster productive and equitable markets; empowerment of local communities, including gender equality; sustainable development based on the interdependent pillars of economic, social and environmental development; fairer rules for international trade, investment and finance; measures to overcome inequality and raise capacity to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); and a stronger multilateral framework based on an effective United Nations.

The result is a must have volume for sociological academics, social policy experts and professionals working within non-governmental organizations.
