Since, however, events and situations have been selected, not for the sake bf local history, but because they reveal some aspect or stage in the development of the undertaking, it is hoped that this limitation will not affect the usefulness of the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Improvement of School Buildings and Grounds A well ordered, well kept school garden would not only give instruction in the best practical methods in horticulture, but would give-an introduction to the plant life of the vicinity and, in many cases, would so open the eyes of the pupils and others influenced by them as to give a closer and happier relationship with Nature and a broader and more generous view of life. Improved methods and appliances in gardening would give an additional interest to life in the country. Why should not our children be taught to take something of that interest in Nature which so delights one in the writings of Thoreau or Emerson, of john Burroughs or of Bradford Torrey? To enrich the school life of the country boy with a wider knowledge of trees and flowers, Of birds and other animals wouldbe of great prae tical value to him in whatever circumstances his subsequent life might be spent. Interest in such objects is a source of perennial pleasure. One cherishes in memory special occasions of suc cesses or surprises in finding rare flowers or unusual numbers of more common ones and enjoys again their beauty as Words worth so quaintly expresses it in his poem on The Daffodils. I gazed and gazed, but 'little thought What wealth that show to me had brought. For oft when on my couch I lie, In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills And dances with the daffodils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Buildings The popularity of "High School Buildings, Volume I," which is now practically out of print, has encouraged the compiler to present this second collection of illustrations and sketch plans of American secondary schoolhouses. Even in so short a period as six years, since the earlier book appeared, there have been large changes in American secondary education and these have been reflected accurately in the design and construction of buildings. The high school has entirely outgrown its academic limitations and traditions and has broadened its influence and its curriculum. Thus, the industrial arts and household arts are no longer "basement subjects;" the natural sciences are now taught in a way to require diversified laboratories; the physical care of students has been extended to necessitate very complete gymnasia and lunch rooms; and the movement for the "wider use" of the school plant by adults has become a fixed fact which school authorities have recognized thru better auditorium and night school facilities. The high school building of the present day is far more inclusive and complicated in the number and type of activities which it serves, and the structures illustrated in the following pages bear out this statement. A departure has been made from the earlier book in the shape of text matter. This consists of articles which appeared originally in the School Board Journal and which aroused considerable attention as statements of fundamental principles in the field of high school architecture. The hearty thanks of the compiler and publishers are hereby expressed to each of the architects and engineers represented in the book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Plant Life As a result of the present efforts to raise the standard of education in this country, many different Methods of Teaching are receiving our grave consideration. So insistent are their advocates, that we stand in some danger of forgetting that learning. Rather than teaching, is the essential factor in education. It is not the know ledge given us ready-made by the teacher, but that which we learn, acquiring it by our own efforts, which enters into our being and becomes a lasting possession. Therefore this little book does not pretend so much to teach as to act as a guide along the road for those who desire to learn something about the plants around them; hence it points out how much they can easily see for themselves of the wonderful life and work of the silent plants. It is planned for children, whose quick sympathies are more readily drawn towards the life of things than to the dry facts of morphology or classification. Its Leitmotif is therefore the story of life, and those of its activities which find expression in the plant world. Perhaps it may serve to awaken interest in some older people who have not yet been initiated into these mysteries. As is inevitable, most of the actual facts in this book are already the common property of botanists, though some of the suggested work, such as the mapping, is only now being adopted by the Universities.
