Book Synopsis Success in Social Marketing by : Nancy R. Lee
Download or read book Success in Social Marketing written by Nancy R. Lee and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social marketing, a field first introduced by Philip Kotler and Gerald Zaltman in a pioneering article in the Journal of Marketing in 1971, uses marketing concepts to influence the behaviors of individuals and communities for the greater social good. Now, as the discipline celebrates its 50th anniversary, Success in Social Marketing provides an accessible and comprehensive guide to the field, introducing stories from around the world including public health, injury prevention, environmental protection, community engagement, financial well-being, and education. The 100 case examples contained in this book, each about two pages in length, follow an outline that includes key components of a campaign: Wicked Problem, Purpose & Focus, Priority Audience, Desired Behavior, Audience Insights, Marketing Intervention Mix, and Results. This common structure provides the reader with a clear sense of how success in social marketing may best be achieved in a wide variety of disciplinary and national contexts. Success in Social Marketing is intended to fill a gap in the market as well as inform and inspire students and practitioners through 100 easily digestible case studies. Issues addressed include public health (opioid use, mental health, COVID-19) , injury prevention (gun violence, youth suicide, texting while driving), environmental protection (wildfires, bicycle transportation in urban areas, food waste), community engagement (homelessness, racially motivated violence, voting) financial wellbeing (microfinance, savings, employment), and educational achievement (early childhood education, college applications, female participation in STEM programs), to name but a few. This book is recommended reading for students enrolled in public administration, public health, environmental studies, as well as policymakers interested in ways social marketing may help influence their constituent behaviors for individual, as well as social, good.

Book Synopsis The Invisible Safety Net by : Janet Currie
Download or read book The Invisible Safety Net written by Janet Currie and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-10 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of the most provocative books ever published on America's social welfare system, economist Janet Currie argues that the modern social safety net is under attack. Unlike most books about antipoverty programs, Currie trains her focus not on cash welfare, which accounts for a small and shrinking share of federal expenditures on poor families with children, but on the staples of today's American welfare system: Medicaid, Food Stamps, Head Start, WIC, and public housing. These programs, Currie maintains, form an effective, if largely invisible and haphazard safety net, and yet they are the very programs most vulnerable to political attack and misunderstanding. This book highlights both the importance and the fragility of this safety net, arguing that, while not perfect, it is essential to fighting poverty. Currie demonstrates how America's safety net is threatened by growing budget deficits and by an erroneous public belief that antipoverty programs for children do not work and are riddled with fraud. By unearthing new empirical data, Currie makes the case that social programs for families with children are actually remarkably effective. She takes her argument one step further by offering specific reforms--detailed in each chapter--for improving these programs even more. The book concludes with an overview of an integrated safety net that would fight poverty more effectively and prevent children from slipping through holes in the net. (For example, Currie recommends the implementation of a benefit "debit card" that would provide benefits with less administrative burden on the recipient.) A complement to books such as Barbara Ehrenreich's bestselling Nickel and Dimed, which document the personal struggles of the working poor, The Invisible Safety Net provides a big-picture look at the kind of programs and solutions that would help ease those struggles. Comprehensive and authoritative, it will prompt a major reexamination of the current thinking on improving the lives of needy Americans.

Book Synopsis The Human Cost of Welfare by : Phil Harvey
Download or read book The Human Cost of Welfare written by Phil Harvey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the welfare system failing to work for so many people? This book examines the problems with the current welfare system and proposes reforms to create a smarter, smaller system that helps people improve their lives through rewarding work. Unlike other books on welfare, this one draws on the stories of more than 100 welfare recipients who are trapped in a system that keeps them underemployed and unemployed. The authors present case studies that show that being a part of a welfare program can actively result in the recipient having to limit their job efforts for fear of losing government assistance. The book examines all major U.S. welfare systems, including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, SNAP, Medicaid, and others. The authors begin by exploring the nation's basic poverty issues and examining the relationship between work and happiness. Next, they zero in on specific welfare programs, reporting both on their dollar costs and on the ways that they fail enrollees. The book then concludes with strategies for addressing the shortcomings of the current U.S. welfare system. This book is appropriate for readers interested in public policy, government programs, welfare, and cultural shifts in America. It adds a new perspective to the existing body of welfare scholarship by systematically assessing the impact of welfare on the receivers themselves.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Poverty by : Philip N. Jefferson
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Economics of Poverty written by Philip N. Jefferson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poverty is a pressing and persistent problem. While its extent varies across countries, its presence always represents the diminution of human capacity. Therefore, it seems natural to want to do something about it. Have countries made progress in mitigating poverty? How do we determine who is poor and who is not poor? What intuitions or theories guide the design of anti-poverty policy? Is overall labor market performance the key to keeping the poverty rate low? Or, does it matter how well-connected an individual is to those who know about the availability of jobs? Does being an immigrant increase the odds of being poor? Are there anti-poverty policies that work? For whom do they work? If I'm poor, will I have access to health care and housing? Am I more likely to be obese, polluted upon, incarcerated, un-banked, and without assets if I'm poor? Is poverty too hard a problem for economic analysis? These are some of the questions that a distinguished group of scholars have come together to confront in this Handbook. The Handbook is written in a highly-accessible style that encourages the reader to think critically about poverty. Theories are presented in a rigorous but not overly-technical way; concise and straightforward empirical analyses enlighten key policy issues. The volume has six parts: Poverty in the 21st Century; Labor Market Factors; Poverty Policy; Poverty Dynamics; Dimensions of Poverty; and Trends and Issues in Anti-Poverty Policy. A goal of the Handbook is to stimulate further research on poverty. To that end, several chapters challenge conventional thinking about poverty and in some cases present specific proposals for the reform of economic and social policy.
