Book Synopsis Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols by : Institute of Medicine

This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past decade, tremendous growth has occurred in the use of nutrition symbols and rating systems designed to summarize key nutritional aspects and characteristics of food products. These symbols and the systems that underlie them have become known as front-of-package (FOP) nutrition rating systems and symbols, even though the symbols themselves can be found anywhere on the front of a food package or on a retail shelf tag. Though not regulated and inconsistent in format, content, and criteria, FOP systems and symbols have the potential to provide useful guidance to consumers as well as maximize effectiveness. As a result, Congress directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to undertake a study with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to examine and provide recommendations regarding FOP nutrition rating systems and symbols. The study was completed in two phases. Phase I focused primarily on the nutrition criteria underlying FOP systems. Phase II builds on the results of Phase I while focusing on aspects related to consumer understanding and behavior related to the development of a standardized FOP system. Front-of-Package Nutrition Rating Systems and Symbols focuses on Phase II of the study. The report addresses the potential benefits of a single, standardized front-label food guidance system regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, assesses which icons are most effective with consumer audiences, and considers the systems/icons that best promote health and how to maximize their use.

Book Synopsis Corporate Environmentalism and Public Policy by : Thomas P. Lyon
Download or read book Corporate Environmentalism and Public Policy written by Thomas P. Lyon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-12-13 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a hard-headed economic view of the voluntary approaches to environmental issues, especially toxic chemicals, waste disposal and global warming, that have become prominent in recent years. Corporate environmental initiatives are seen as a tool for influencing the behaviour of environmental activists, legislators, and regulators, though they may have ancillary benefits such as attracting 'green' consumers or reducing costs. Equally, government voluntary programs are seen as a way to achieve modest environmental results when political resistance to mandatory policies is high. Rigorous analysis is illustrated with numerous case studies drawn from the US, Europe, and Japan, while technical details are relegated to appendices, and each chapter highlights implications for corporate strategy and public policy. Although rooted in economic theory, this book will appeal to business strategists and policy practitioners, as well as scholars and researchers.
Book Synopsis Residential Exposure Assessment by : Jeffrey Driver
Download or read book Residential Exposure Assessment written by Jeffrey Driver and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Residential Exposure Assessment: A Source Book is the result of a multiyear effort known as the Residential Exposure Assessment Project (REAP) which was initiated by the Society for Risk Analysis and the International Society of Exposure Analysis. This textbook is the primary product of the REAP and it contains contributions from over 30 professionals from a variety of disciplines such as chemistry, biology, physics, engi neering, industrial hygiene, toxicology, pharmacology, and environmental law, reflecting the diverse knowledge and resources necessary to assess and manage potential exposures occurring in and around the home. Expert working groups were organized for each of the 13 chapters to address such issues as U. S. legislation relevant to products used in and around the residence, methods for measuring and modeling exposures across multiple pathways and routes, and distributional data available for key residential exposure factors. This volume is a compendium of information about predictive methods and tools, monitoring methods, data sources, and key variables that characterize exposures in the residential setting. It presents approaches for doing exposure assessments in and around all types of residences. The purpose of the Source Book is to provide a resource for use in educational programs and for "practitioners" of residential exposure assessment. Accordingly, this book is intended for risk assessors, exposure assessors, students, initi ates new to the concept of risk assessment, industrial hygienists assessing health hazards in the home, engineers, and monitoring specialists.

Book Synopsis The Complete Book of Pesticide Management by : Fred Whitford
Download or read book The Complete Book of Pesticide Management written by Fred Whitford and published by Wiley-Interscience. This book was released on 2002-06-17 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exhaustive, definitive guide to the past, present, and future of pesticide management Pesticides provide myriad benefits but present a variety of risks. With definitive policies and requirements for pesticide review before a product enters the marketplace, with clear and precise labeling, and with good consumer education, however, pesticides can play an important role in maintaining the quality of life we enjoy. The Complete Book of Pesticide Management describes the step-by-step process by which industry and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reach a consensus on the relative risk that pesticides pose to people, wildlife, and water. While most books only skim the risk assessment process or are too technical for practical application, The Complete Book of Pesticide Management is at once technically sound and easy to understand. Fred Whitford's authoritative text links scientific information developed from pesticide testing programs with the safety and precautionary language commonly found on product labels. It describes how to communicate pesticide benefits and risks to the public and provides information on how to select pesticides and protect the professionals handling these chemicals. Risk assessment and risk communication are emphasized throughout. Contents include: * The Evolution of Pesticide Regulations: The Shift from Benefits to Risks * Epidemiology: Validating Human Risk Assessments * Pesticide Labels: The Convergence of Science, Public Policy, and User Responsibility * Environmental Site Assessments: Managing the Facility Against Contamination * Planning for Emergencies: Preventing and Reacting to Emergencies in the Workplace * Educating the Community and the Workforce About Hazardous Chemicals Engineers, scientists, toxicologists, industrial hygienists, and extension and commercial application industry professionals, as well as students of these fields, will find The Complete Book of Pesticide Management to be an indispensable resource.
