Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Why I Didn’t Kill My Former-In-Law” This story is based on true events. It is the unimaginable horror of what happened to Marge Gleason, left with haunting memories of her mother’s death and her former-in-law who continued to make millions by conning the legal system, and getting away with it because of her close relatives who are judges in a small town. They have a delicious plan to rip off Marge of what was rightfully hers left by her mother in her Will. A few hours after the passing of Marge’s mother, the former-in-law and two of her children robbed Marge’s mother’s home, where they discovered a hidden fortune left to Marge by her mother. This was Marge’s money. But they stole the documents as proof in order for Marge to fight what was legally hers. None of them ever hesitated about having Marge knocked-off. Marge had no doubt they would do what they have threatened and the chaos was just the beginning. But Marge refused to live like a prisoner given the circumstances or the disturbing effect they had on her. The former-in-law was determined to be in control of Marge’s mother’s Will through the power of her relatives sitting on the bench in the law of justice. Marge did not become the angry woman who takes the law into her own hands. Instead, she followed the law of righteousness and did not kill her former-in-law, even though she was constantly tempted every day. Marge learned the hard way how to control her emotions. This took every ounce of personal discipline, even as she was being stalked daily for months at a time by an evil, violent, unpredictable sociopath known as the former-in-law that tried to murder Marge and would have murdered her for her mother’s estate. Even though Marge found it hard to contain her fright at the thought of being eaten alive, she continued to live her life as she prayed for protection every night from a money hungry terrifying nasty former-in-law who lives without a conscience and her only thoughts are, ‘Money is my God.’ (All the Names have been Changed until the Guilty are Exposed) At the end of the book there is a Self Help chapter which includes: Don’t Let this Happen to You! How to Protect yourself as a Rightful Heir!

It's absolutely gorgeous, practically flawless, and let's be honest, really big!But what the successful Chicago realtor doesn't have anymore is a husband. After 12 years of marriage, her husband, Paul, a handsome, wealthy attorney has devastated her by breaking up their marriage for Priscilla Sommerfeld, a young, personal trainer, who according to Missy's sassy assistant, J.J., looks more like a Las Vegas stripper than a fitness expert. Not sure what to do with her ring, and with no financial issues to worry about, Missy decides to put it up for sale on Craigslist. The price: 99 cents! The catch: She gets to pick the buyer. In essence, she's looking for the perfect guy, but not for herself. Her hope is to regain faith that good men do exist, and that marriages can last forever. Now referring to herself as "the divorced girl," Missy interviews dozens of young men who are vying for the huge ring. It's a contest that includes outrageous characters, hilarious and sentimental stories, and two finalists, both of whom Missy adores and who she must choose between. Then there's Parker Missoni, the sexiest contestant by far, who drives her crazy with his brutal honesty, and at the same time stops her heart with his deep brown eyes.Divorced Girl Smiling is the story of a woman's journey to do whatever it takes to heal herself from divorce. It's about acceptance, reflection, taking accountability for mistakes, and appreciating all of life's wonderful gifts. In other words, if you have the guts to put the past behind, admit your mistakes, embrace your future, and give love another chance, you will surely be a divorced girl smiling.

Later on, she realized that it was impossible for a man to fall in love with someone just because he was moved. Five years after their marriage, his first love came back. He wanted a divorce and wanted her to have an abortion. ***

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2013 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction Benjamin Alire S enz's stories reveal how all borders--real, imagined, sexual, human, the line between dark and light, addict and straight--entangle those who live on either side. Take, for instance, the Kentucky Club on Avenida Ju rez two blocks south of the Rio Grande. It's a touchstone for each of S enz's stories. His characters walk by, they might go in for a drink or to score, or they might just stay there for a while and let their story be told. S enz knows that the Kentucky Club, like special watering holes in all cities, is the contrary to borders. It welcomes Spanish and English, Mexicans and gringos, poor and rich, gay and straight, drug addicts and drunks, laughter and sadness, and even despair. It's a place of rich history and good drinks and cold beer and a long polished mahogany bar. Some days it smells like piss. "I'm going home to the other side." That's a strange statement, but you hear it all the time at the Kentucky Club. Benjamin Alire S enz is a highly regarded writer of fiction, poetry, and children's literature. Like these stories, his writing crosses borders and lands in our collective psyche. Poets & Writers Magazine named him one of the fifty most inspiring writers in the world. He's been a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and PEN Center's prestigious award for young adult fiction. S enz is the chair of the creative writing department of University of Texas at El Paso. Awards: PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction Lambda Literary Award Southwest Book Award

Book excerpt: This book is not about OJ. Simpson or his "Dream Team." This book is not another rehash of the "Trial of the Century." It is about Ron Golman and his blended family. Overnight and through tragedy, this quiet, closely knit family became enmeshed in one of the ugliest and most controversial crimes in recent history. The Goldmans provide a wrenching account, in their own words, of the ripple effect that occurs when a beloved family member is murdered, and the extra burdens that develop when grief becomes a public spectacle. But, more important, the family puts a name, a face, a soul, to the young man referred to in the press only as "a friend of..." or "a part-time waiter and sometime model." The Goldmans are a family with whom all of us can identify. They share memories of happier times and recount, moment by moment, learning of Ron's untimely death and the nightmare that followed. They share their reactions throughout the criminal trial up to and including the heart-stopping verdict. And they reveal the details of the civil trial that were never before allowed to be made public, due to the gag order imposed on all participants. And finally, they reveal their determination to bring much-needed reforms to the criminal justice system and to give voices to other victims of violent crimes. Much of what Ron's family has to say will surprise you... will enrage you... And most of all will break your heart.

Book excerpt: For any serious scholar of Russian and Ukrainian witchcraft and magic, this volume is a 'must read.'... Scholars of folklore and popular culture also will find much of value.― Folklorica This sourcebook provides the first systematic overview of witchcraft laws and trials in Russia and Ukraine from medieval times to the late nineteenth century. Witchcraft in Russia and Ukraine, 1000–1900 weaves scholarly commentary with never-before-published primary source materials translated from Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian. These sources include the earliest references to witchcraft and sorcery, secular and religious laws regarding witchcraft and possession, full trial transcripts, and a wealth of magical spells. The documents present a rich panorama of daily life and reveal the extraordinary power of magical words. Editors Valerie A. Kivelson and Christine D. Worobec present new analyses of the workings and evolution of legal systems, the interplay and tensions between church and state, and the prosaic concerns of the women and men involved in witchcraft proceedings. The extended documentary commentaries also explore the shifting boundaries and fraught political relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Book excerpt: The Zapotec observe that 'a bad compromise is better than a good fight'. Why? This study of the legal system of the Zapotec village of Talea suggests that compromise and, more generally, harmony are strategies used by colonized groups to protect themselves from encroaching powerholders or strategies the colonizers use to defend themselves against organized subordinates. Harmony models are present, despite great organizational and cultural differences, in many parts of the world. However, the basic components of harmony ideology are the same everywhere: an emphasis on conciliation, recognition that resolution of conflict is inherently good and that its reverse - continued conflict or controversy - is bad, a view of harmonious behaviour as more civilized than disputing behaviour, the belief that consensus is of greater survival value than controversy. The book's central thesis is that harmony ideology in Talea today is both a product of nearly 500 years of colonial encounter and a strategy for resisting the state's political and cultural hegemony.
