"The life of Jesus," says Tischendorf, "is the most momentous of all questions which the Church has to encounter, - the one which is decisive whether it shall or shall not live." The assailants demand that the Christian apologist shall put his system to the test of exhibiting its philosophic basis and its rational explanation. Whether the demand be reasonable or unreasonable, it is certain that this scientific age will continue to press its questions of why and how. While it is absolutely certain that God's Word will stand all legitimate tests and remain intact to the end of time, it is no less certain that some of the old modes of viewing, exhibiting, and defending it must be abandoned for others which are more truly scientific, or, in other words, more in harmony with the divine truth and thought. His reported words and discourses, and the earliest accounts of his deeds, were written down and circulated in that language, as no one doubts. Documents of this sort were numerous (Luke 1:1), and they attest literary skill of a high order; thus notably the rather extensive source, "Q," used by Matthew and Luke. In what way these primitive records were related to our Four Gospels, is a question which hitherto has not received any satisfactory answer. It is purposed here to show that the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John were composed in Aramaic on the basis of popular documents widespread in Palestine, and that they were by others translated into Greek without intended change. Also, that Luke employed only Semitic sources, assembling them into an especially complete Gospel, which he himself translated. The evidence of translation, in each and all of the Four Gospels, is perfectly clear and very complete. The attempt is here made to give an English rendering which takes constant account of the original Semitic text, everywhere closely reproduced in the Greek. These Notes are intended for reading to households, and for the use of the middle and lower classes. They are meant to be explanatory of difficulties: simply in the sense of pointing out, in full and popular language, the ordinary and received meaning of such words and passages as persons of those classes need to have explained. The principle on which to do this - what to set down and what to omit - has been founded on ula\ny years' experience in Sun - day School teaching. What has appeared to be proper matter for question and answer, as regards explanation, in an intelligent upper class in a good Sunday School, I have thought suitable for exposition in these Notes. It is not that the Sunday Scholars, or the ordinary readers of the classes referred to, are ignorant of much that is here written; but that it may be of advantage to them in various ways to have it at hand, in plain and intelligible language. I have not aimed at direct practical teaching; but such teaching is inevitably involved to some, though not to a very great extent, in any attempt at explanation. So limited, however, I trust that such a publication may not be thought unsuitable for a layman to venture upon. It may indeed be thought that the absence both of full practical application, and of much of the deeper, wider, more mysterious and more spiritual meanings of the sacred text, leaves, in many cases, but a cold, dry, inadequate residuum. I can only reply that that larger field is unexhausted and inexhaustible; that it is for those to cultivate it whose profession and studies give them the proper authority to do so; and that simple readers will be then best fitted to benefit by that more advanced teaching, when they have a clear hold of the primary sense of the records with which it deals. It shows signs, too, of care ful investigation and compilation. This is according to what Luke professes to do in the short preface to his Gospel. To sum up what we have said of the Four Gospels: Matthew pictures Jesus as the prom ised Messiah, Mark exhibits him as the mighty Worker, Luke shows him as the Friend of mankind, and John portrays him as the divine Word made esh. It is as if Matthew, when relating the story of Jesus, were just in the frame of mind in which the disciples must have been when, after the resurrection, Jesus explained the scriptures; at that moment which is described in these words: Then Luke opened he their mind, that they might under stand the scriptures. It is as if Mark had remained in the frame of mind in which his master Peter was when, in answer to Jesus' question, Who say ye that I am he could say, without referring back to his birth, or having yet seen his resurrection and ascension, but only judging from the great things he had seen in his ministry, Thou art the Christ, the Matt. 16: 16. Son of the living God. It is as if Luke had Paul's feeling, a feeling that could have sprung up only after the outpouring at Pentecost.
