Book excerpt: This novel is full of Love, Mystery, Deception and heartache. It will make you laugh, and sometimes cry. The heroin in this story is Shelleen Porter. She didnt wait until she was an adult to become her brothers keeper. She started when she was just nine years old. This young girl was destined to be a leader. Little Jake was her neighbor, and because he had polio, and walked different from most twelve year olds, and talked different, some children had the tendency to pick at him in some way. But not when Shelleen was around. One evening she had detention, which meant she had to stay after school for an hour. When she got home her sister told her that Morey had pushed Little Jake down. She went to Jakes house, got him and proceeded to Moreys house. When his Mom answered the door. Shelleen told her she needed to see Morey. His mother asked her the reason. She told her she came to beat his butte for pushing Jake down. Moreys mother, shocked and surprised, said that if he needed punishing she was the one to do it. Shelleen said well go ahead and punish him, because if she didnt she was going to get him going to school tomorrow morning, or at school, or coming home from school tomorrow afternoon. Because Shelleen believed she should look after her neighbors and her friends, she had the reputation of being a troublemaker. Her mother had to constantly visit her school. This went on all through elementary school and into high school. One of her most troubling times in high school was when she got a baseball bat to beat seven guys who had raped five girls in her classroom. In the eleventh grade, Shelleen and her sister Greta coned there way into an adult nightclub. There she met Lou Buckbinder. They fell in love. Hence, began a long love story. She was seventeen, he was twenty-six years old. This would end up being one of the most controversial love stories you have ever read. Lou was a married man, whose wife took their daughter and left home. He was looking for someone to hang with; Shelleen was looking for her first love. While she had a lot of self-control issues, he had friends he was concerned about that had many problems. Johnny his best friend was married to a woman that had turned out to be a drunken alcoholic. David had an ex-girlfriend that was pretending to be pregnant in order to get money from him. His sister-in-law, Shandon was one of the five girls who were raped by seven guys. She was being investigated, because two of those guys had been mysteriously killed. She was a suspect in their murders. Lou was a college graduate who wanted to build a real estate business. That was his goal. Now, he had a girl friend that was constantly having problems that was affecting him and his work. In Shelleens second year of college she was enticed into having a sex act with another girl. Afterwards, she felt dirty and ashamed, and then she attempted suicide. Lou coached her into letting it go. After this incident, she began to change. Her whole attitude and outlook on life changed. She started making good grades, and kept an A average throughout the rest of her college experience. When she graduated, she and Lou were supposed to get married, but a strange thing happen. She told Lou that they were going to have to put their marriage on hold for a while. She said she had joined the Army Nurses Corps, and had accepted an assignment in Iraq. When Shelleen was sixteen years old, she said that the most important thing in life to her was, what she could do to make life better for all people. That seemed to be the creed she was living by. Lou was devastated. He felt like the whole world was against him. He finally picked himself up, and started planning for his future without the person he loved more than life itself. Shelleen had been in Iraq a little more than a year when he decided to go there to see her. She told him he shouldn

Before his rule, Egyptians lived a life of slavery under their rulers, who demanded abject submission. In a culture where rulers are revered as gods, change comes slowly, if at all. The pharaohs grand vision of sweeping social reform is met with violent hostility by the priesthood and every other power player in the kingdom. When Akhnaton announces that he is, in fact, as mortal and fallible as his subjects, his proclamation inspires rivalries that would enthusiastically put his new mortality to the test. Neighbors struggle with questions of faith, morality, and the social order in Winter Dreams, a two-act play that could take place in any small town in America. When a child preacher stirs up old drama and rivalries, more questions than answers arise. Is he really the voice of God, or are other forces at work? The New Odyssey explores a darker future for humanity. In 1999as the flames of the disastrous Third World War cool, and the fourth apocalyptic global war loomsa college professor summons Hesiod, Homer, and Shakespeare. He argues passionately to enlist their help in a bold plan to save humanity from its eventual destructionat the hand of womankind. If he can get these three minds from humanitys past in on his scheme, there may be hope for mankinds future yet.

Book excerpt: The reader will be drawn irresistably into the world of the author who presents a catalogue of abuse and cruelty suffered by herself as an innocent child, first at the hands of her alcoholic father, then by nuns, and later by a heartless husband who raped and beat her. This is compulsive reading. The book shows how the shadow of a father's cruelty can be cast over the whole life of a child--a child who, in this instance, never failed to turn the other cheek, or return love for cruelty and abuse, who manifested, in the end, the overriding power and strength of Christ who advocated love above all things. The book is a protest against domestic violence and institutionalised cruelty, and will hopefully stand as a beacon and warning against the violations suffered by so many Emelias whose heartfelt cries go unheard behind the closed or locked doors of our apparently respectable western civilization.

Book excerpt: This book is hopefully the voice for every child who experiences any of the downs of divorce, simply because one parent chooses to do his own thing for “Just Right Now.” Divorce is hard enough for the child in and of itself without their having to deal with the fact that that loving missing parent believes his needs are more important than his child’s. This is where I believe a real difference exist in Americans and Jamaicans. Jamaicans seem to have a stronger feel for Family, Elders and loyalty. Fatherhood is not a temporary position! Most men here are more than enthused when it comes to promoting themselves for the sake of their business; it makes you wonder how does their enthusiasm diminish when it comes to involvement with their own flesh and blood! If they would just try giving themselves completely for a little while to that child they would surely see that their children’s love would fill the void they’re denying, and the love given and received from them will last longer, and weigh greater than anything else, forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Writing Daddy's GirlAfter I had been through many versions of the manuscript (written over almost a decade) I decided that for this book to have validity it would be necessary not only to show the past but also to give a picture of the present-illustrating how the events of my childhood affected me at the time, as well as later in life as an adult and a parent.Given that I wrote the book in the first place as a document that I hoped would be useful to others who'd suffered abuse and also to professionals, I felt it was very important to present detailed portraits of the child I was and the woman I grew to be (in large measure as a result of trying to cope with the long-term effects of the abuse.) As well, I thought it was vital to illustrate how fallout from the abuse can be felt down through the generations, if one fails to exercise awareness and caution. So the book weaves back and forth between past and present (the present being 1979, when the final version was completed). I also had to decide at the very start whether I was going to dole out snippets of truth or be completely truthful and address the issue as fully as I was able. There seemed no point to writing an autobiographical account of incest if I was going to be anything less than completely truthful. It was not difficult to tell the truth, nor was the writing of the book a cathartic experience, as many have imagined it to be. The fact is that I had long-since confronted my personal demons and had managed to relegate the past to the past-something exceedingly difficult for many victims of any/all forms of abuse to do.A few years ago in correcting the page proofs of a new British edition of the book, I reread DADDY'S GIRL, and was gratified by what I'd written. (Often, with my novels, I am not at all happy when I reread them.) I think that as an author I have little, if any, objectivity about my work once it's completed and so am not necessarily a good judge of it. But I am proud of DADDY'S GIRL. Since its publication in 1980 it has been of help to a lot of people. And, ultimately, it's my way of returning some measure of the kindness and attention people showed me when I was working my way along the rough roadway toward my future.
