Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The relations between eastern and western cultures have long been a neglected topic, and this careful and intelligent look at a small but significant part of those relations is most welcome."--Thomas McEvilley, author of The Shape of Ancient Thought "How wonderful that Jacquelynn Baas has seen the light of the Buddha's smile shining from faraway Asia into the realm of the art of modern times in what we think of as the West! . . . Her work reveals how some of our most influential artists explored and expressed the sophisticated perceptions and joyful energy emanating from the realm of Buddhist Asia."--Robert A. F. Thurman "As a Buddhist scholar and artist I welcome this thoughtful and richly detailed study of how many aspects of Buddhism have stimulated, invigorated, and enriched Western arts over the past 150 years."--Stephen Addiss, author of The Art of Zen "A crucial contribution to modern art studies, this high-spirited text surveys Western artists awakened by the wisdom of the East, from Monet and Duchamp to O'Keeffe to Martin. It is a thoughtful book about thoughtful artists, their values and their visions, with a lot to offer general readers and specialists alike."--Charles Stuckey, Associate Professor of Art History at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago

Book Synopsis The Korean Singer of Tales by : Marshall R. Pihl
Download or read book The Korean Singer of Tales written by Marshall R. Pihl and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P'ansori, the traditional oral narrative of Korea, is sung by a highly trained soloist to the accompaniment of complex drumming. The singer both narrates the story and dramatizes all the characters, male and female. Performances require as long as six hours and make extraordinary vocal demands. In the first book-length treatment in English of this remarkable art form, Pihl traces the history of p'ansori from its roots in shamanism and folktales through its nineteenth-century heyday under highly acclaimed masters and discusses its evolution in the twentieth century. After examining the place of p'ansori in popular entertainment and its textual tradition, he analyzes the nature of texts in the repertoire and explains the vocal and rhythmic techniques required to perform them. Pihl's superb translation of the alternately touching and comic "Song of Shim Ch'ong"—the first annotated English translation of a full p'ansori performance text—illustrates the emotional range, narrative variety, and technical complexity of p'ansori literature. The Korean Singer of Tales will interest not only Korean specialists, but also students of comparative literature, folklore, anthropology, and music.
Download or read book Buddha Smiles written by Ajit Jha and published by . This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siddhartha, the Buddha, radiating peace and bliss moves with his band of monks across length and breadth of Indicaland meeting commoners, die-hard criminals and monarchs on rampage, with his mission of peace. 'Now' and 'this moment' is the only truth on which he builds his thesis of peace. The greatest of logicians and the war-crazy monarchs get humbled by his crisp and sharp logic that adds to his presence. Men, women and children from the best and worst of backgrounds and professions are magnetically drawn to him as his words and physical presence powerfully transforms them. His monastery rises and falls but he persists in his mission-the first organized pacifist movement in the world. In course of his peace mission, he faces several challenges. There is a plot to humble him down in an open debate and banish him to the forest. There is plot to kill him. But he emerges unscathed through these challenges. In fact, the greatest challenge comes to him in the form of a royal concubine, who is persistently bent on meeting him and joining his monastery. The rules forbid women from joining the monastery. But ultimately she has her way. Siddhartha is touched by her devotion and courage. He has to change the rule and a royal concubine becomes the first woman to join his order.

Book Synopsis Buddhist Dictionary by : Nyanatiloka Thera
Download or read book Buddhist Dictionary written by Nyanatiloka Thera and published by Pariyatti. This book was released on 2019-10-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains translations of important Pali words and meditation terms arranged in alphabetical order (Roman-script - normal English); definitions include a longer discussion of certain complex concepts and source references. There are translations of both English and Pali words mixed together, making it easy to look up important Pali words or terms, or finding them when knowing only the English equivalent. "This sixth revised edition is a cooperative effort of the BPS and Pariyatti. In this edition the abbreviation scheme and reference systems have been modernised. Moreover, some of the “source notes”—made in an age when digital search tools were not available, and originally located in an appendix—have been revised by me in order to accurately reflect the first occurrences of terms and to avoid duplication of statements already found in the entries. The British spelling of words has been retained." —Nyanatusita Kandy, Sri Lanka September 2017.
Book Synopsis The Lankavatara Sutra A Mahayana Text (Tr. For The First Time From The Original Sanskrit) by : Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki
Download or read book The Lankavatara Sutra A Mahayana Text (Tr. For The First Time From The Original Sanskrit) written by Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publishe. This book was released on 2009 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title Lankavatara might main entering Lanka (perhaps referring to the temporary Mahayana period of Ceylon), suggesting that the doctrines of this scripture are possibly consistent with earlier Buddhism preserved in the Pali language. Suzuki s pioneering translation of the Lankavatara Sutra was based on the Sanskrit text (1923) edited by Bunyu Nanjo. It is a remarkable coverage of Mahayana Buddhist topics, especially of the type often associated with the Yogacara school of Buddhism, yet it is of interest to everyone who desires an introduction to Mahayana Buddhism. Here, the world is like a mirage. The mind has poured out its impression of externals. To get liberated one must stop this outpouring. An advanced individual understands and comes to realize the self-nature of the world which is really so. The editor of the book Alex Wayman says, It is indeed a pleasure to have this famous translation of a work of incomparable content of matters important for Mahayana Buddhism appears in the Buddhist Tradition Series. I have reservations about translation of certain terms of this work, but have no reservations about the importance of making this translation available to interested readers.

Book Synopsis Buddhist Dictionary by : Nyanatiloka Thera
Download or read book Buddhist Dictionary written by Nyanatiloka Thera and published by Buddhist Publication Society. This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its first publication in 1952, Buddhist Dictionary has been a trusted companion and helper in the study of Buddhist literature. The author, Nyanatiloka Thera, was qualified as few others have ever been to serve as a reliable guide through the field of Theravada Buddhist terminology and doctrine. In this book he offers authentic and lucid explanations of Pali Buddhist terms, with cross-references in English and source references as well. Amidst the welter of modern works on Buddhism, and translations differing one from the other, this book will help in identifying the doctrinal terms and in correcting misleading renderings.
