Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Africa, grade: 1,7, University of Tubingen (Politikwissenschaftliches Institut), 50 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The Millennium Development goals (MDGs) were set in 2000 as an ambitious goal to improve the situation in developing countries in fields such as education, reducing poverty or improving the health situation for the poor. Those goals shall be achieved until the year 2015, which means that halve of the time between the settings of the goals and the supposed reaching of those has passed. Thus it is time to ask how successful the tries have been until now, and if it is still realistic to achieve those goals. This paper will place special emphasis on Africa and especially Sub-Sahara Africa. In this region the smallest progress can be seen, and in certain areas no success as all can be witnessed. The main question, which will be answered in this paper, is therefore: "What are the problems that prevent the countries in Sub-Sahara Africa to achieve the Millennium Development goals?" In the first section of the paper the Millennium Declaration, which was signed in September 2000, will be introduced, and the growing international acceptation of those goals will be mentioned. (Qureshi, 2004) After that the present situation will be described. When all developing countries are seen together, the data suggest that improvement has taken place and that the implemented strategies have been at least partly successful. But this is a very limited view, as there are different categories of developing countries. The situation in the two biggest countries of the world China and India has improved significantly, and Asia in general has made some progress, especially the regions East and South-East Asia show significant improvement during the last years. The next section will analyse the poor performance of African countries and why this is the case. Two ma

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book draws upon the expertise and international research collaborations forged by the Worldwide Universities Network Global Africa Group to critically engage with the intersection, in theory and practice, of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Africa’s development agendas and needs. Further, it argues that – and demonstrates how – the SDGs should be understood as an aspirational blueprint for development with multiple meanings that are situated in dynamic and contested terrains. As the SDGs have substantial implications for development policy and resourcing at both the macro and micro levels, their relevance is not only context-specific but should also be assessed in terms of the aspirations and needs of ordinary citizens across the continent. Drawing on analyses and evidence from both the natural and social sciences, the book demonstrates that progress towards the SDGs must meet demands for improving human well-being under diverse and challenging socio-economic, political and environmental conditions. Examples include those from the mining industry, public health, employment and the media. In closing, it highlights how international collaboration in the form of research networks can enhance the production of critical knowledge on and engagement with the SDGs in Africa.
Book Synopsis Implementation of the Millennium Development Goals by : Nicholas Awortwi
Download or read book Implementation of the Millennium Development Goals written by Nicholas Awortwi and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2000, world leaders from 189 countries, including 147 Heads of State, gathered at the United Nations General Assembly to consider the challenges of the new millennium. They adopted the Millennium Declaration, which set out a vision for inclusive and sustainable globalization (UN 2000 (A/RES/55/2)). The leaders pledged to work towards ensuring that conditions of extreme poverty are eradicated wherever they existed. To actualise this declaration, the UN established eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved by 2015. The goals were broken down into 18 concrete targets and 48 indicators to track progresses in implementation. For the past 14 years thereafter, countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been striving to achieve the goals. So far, some have achieved some of the goals, and the results toward the rest of the goals are also by and large positive, though off-target. This book brings together results of studies on progresses and challenges in the implementation of the MDGs in Lesotho, Kenya, Botswana, Madagascar, Tanzania, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria. The authors focus on selected goals as cases. The book also presents lessons that can inform the post-2015 development agenda.

The next section will analyse the poor performance of African countries and why this is the case. Two major possible explanations will be given. On the one hand it could be the fault of the giving countries, since they are not investing enough money in Africa. On the other hand not only the giving countries have to be analysed when looking at the failures of the last decade, also the situation in the African countries themselves has to be monitored. The last part of the main paper will look at possible new strategies, which could be used in order to improve the situation in Sub-Sahara Africa.
Book Synopsis From Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals by : Kobena T. Hanson
Download or read book From Millennium Development Goals to Sustainable Development Goals written by Kobena T. Hanson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Millennium development goals (MDGs) and sustainable development goals (SDGs) have significant implications for global development, in particular for African countries. This book seeks to assist Africa’s policy makers and political leaders, MNCs and NGOs, plus its increasingly heterogeneous media landscape, to understand and better respond or negotiate the evolving development environment of the 21st century. In this collection of nuanced essays, the contributors interrogate the relationship between the MDGs and SDGs in key areas of African development to enhance our understanding and knowledge of the evolving nature of development. They address issues of governance, agriculture, south-south cooperation in a context of foreign aid, natural resource governance and sustainable development, export diversification and economic growth as well as emerging topics such as the internet of things or the sharing economy, climate change, conflict and non-traditional security. The varied, yet interlinked foci present a holistic overview of Africa’s development aspirations, and ability to transform the SDGs’ universal aspirations into local realities. This book will be of use to academics and students in Development Studies, Contemporary African Studies, Political Science, Policy Studies and Geography, and should also appeal to policy makers and development practitioners.
Book Synopsis Development in Africa by : Kararach, George
Download or read book Development in Africa written by Kararach, George and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 2000, countries across Africa have maintained over a decade of unprecedented economic expansion in a phenomena known as ‘Africa rising’. However, despite pockets of strong economic growth, Africa still faces major development challenges. In this important book the contributors argue that Africa as a continent must work on securing social and political stability and build effective economic governance to ensure the development of a society that is socially, economically and politically inclusive. Looking beyond the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) the contributors highlight what they consider to be the 12 major public policy conversations of the continent post-2015, from the legacy of African leadership, to the ‘youth bulge’ (and resulting unemployment) and climate change. The volume presents policy makers, academics and students with a chance to take a fresh look at urgent emerging challenges in post-MDG African development.
Download or read book Halving Hunger written by Shenggen Fan and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000, the world's leaders set a target of halving the percentage of hungry people between 1990 and 2015. This rather modest target constitutes part of the first Millennium Development Goal, which also calls for halving the proportion of people living in poverty and achieving full employment. However, the effort to meet the hunger target has swerved off track, and the world is getting farther and farther away from realizing this objective. The goal of halving hunger by 2015 can still be achieved, but business as usual will not be enough. What is needed is "business as unusual"-a smarter, more innovative, better focused, and cost-effective approach to reducing hunger.
Book Synopsis Africa and the Millennium Development Goals by : Ahmed Rhazaoui
Download or read book Africa and the Millennium Development Goals written by Ahmed Rhazaoui and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millennium Development Goals (MDG) constitute an ambitious agenda to significantly improve the human condition. The goals set clear targets for reducing poverty, hunger, disease, illiteracy, environmental degradation, and discrimination against women. Realizing the Millennium Development Goals in the years ahead will be a particularly challenging task in sub-Saharan Africa, in light of weak and often faltering macroeconomic performance, vulnerability to negative climatic shocks, fertility rates and population growth that outpace those of other regions, and a devastating combination of poverty, continued civil conflict, and the effects of HIV/AIDS. This book provides empirical estimates of current progress in African countries and reviews the various obstacles standing in the way, the roles and responsibilities of national actors and their partners, and the advocacy, monitoring, and evaluation aspects of MDG implementation. The authors emphasize the need for changes in public policy and for action in both the developed and developing countries.

Book Synopsis The Millennium Development Goals and Beyond by : Rorden Wilkinson
Download or read book The Millennium Development Goals and Beyond written by Rorden Wilkinson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have contributed to reductions in poverty and improvements in the human condition in many parts of the world since their "invention" in 2000 and 2001. It nonetheless remains the case that today, as on all the previous days of the twenty-first century, almost one billion people will go hungry. Debates about whether the MDGs have made a positive contribution to poverty eradication and/or whether they have achieved as much as they should have done are becoming more frequent as 2015 and the "end of the MDGs" approaches. This book highlights that active debate about what the MDGs have achieved and what that means for the crafting of a post-2015 international framework for action, must become a priority. The work begins by examining the global context of the goals from a variety of perspectives, and moves on to focus on the region that continues to be the most impoverished and which looks likely to fall short of meeting many of the MDGs: Africa. Presenting both a broad overview of the issues and drawing together prestigious scholars and practitioners from a variety of fields, this work provides a significant contribution to debates surrounding both global poverty and the success and future of the MDGs.
Download or read book Capitalism written by Garry Leech and published by Zed Books Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of the global financial crisis, and ongoing savage government cuts across the world, Garry Leech addresses a pressing and necessary topic: the nature of contemporary capitalism, and how it inherently generates inequality and structural violence. Drawing on a number of fascinating case studies from across the world - including the forced displacement of farmers in Mexico, farmer suicides in India, and deaths from preventable and treatable diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as the unsustainable exploitation of the planet's natural resources - Leech provocatively argues that global capitalism constitutes a form of genocide against the poor, particularly in the global South. Essential and eye-opening the book questions the legitimacy of a system that inevitably results in such large-scale human suffering, while going beyond mere critique to offer a more egalitarian, democratic and sustainable global alternative.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalisation refers to the process of growing interdependence between the economies and businesses of different countries, with the ever increasing movement across national boundaries of goods, services, investment finance and jobs. This White Paper considers the Government's policy approach towards international trade and investment, based upon its commitment to sustainable development and in the context of an enlarged EU. It addresses the implications of globalisation both nationally and internationally, and sets out the Government's vision of a world trading system which is fair as well as free for all. It contains three sections which focus on: i) the internationalisation of business, markets and production, EU developments, and the experience of developing countries; ii) how to ensure the UK economy benefits from globalisation; and iii) the role of trade and investment in global poverty reduction, including the Doha Development Agenda, market liberalisation in developing countries, international regulation, agricultural trade and development, environmental protection and labour standards, promoting corporate social responsibility, and improving the functioning of the World Trade Organization.
