Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When histories, too often, have little room for the individuals who are the life and soul of the past, there is a place for a history which is composed of the lives of those who helped to make it what it was-and is." --Geoffrey Treasure, series editor. Many see the Victorian era as Britain's heyday. Certainly some of the nation's most exceptional citizens lived then, not least, of course, Queen Victoria herself. In all fields, pioneers were at work, among them Isbard Kingdom Brunel, Florence Nightingale, John Ruskin, William Morris, Sir Robert Peel, Sir John Stuart Mill, Michael Faraday, Edward Lear, and Charles Darwin. Book excerpt: This historical analysis of the political and religious relationship of Britain and Spain, from 12th-century dynastic alliances to the Spanish support of the English-American invasion of Iraq, asserts that there have been many significant links between the two countries over the past 800 years. While England and Spain were rivals in the New World, British and Spanish troops fought side by side for causes of mutual concern during the Peninsular War, Spanish Civil War, and World War II. This bittersweet relationship has been fundamental to Continental politics and the position of each country in the international realm.

Book Synopsis Politics and Culture in Victorian Britain by : Peter Ghosh
Download or read book Politics and Culture in Victorian Britain written by Peter Ghosh and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-03-09 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last twenty years one of the classical arenas for British historical writing - the politics of Victorian Britain - has ceased to be an obvious or self-evidently important subject. Facing up to this challenge, the historians who have contributed to this volume explore central aspects of that history. They continue to uphold the centrality of politics to Victorian Britain, but suggest that politics must be viewed more broadly, as a concern pervading almost all spheres of life, just as Victorians themselves would have done. In this way politics penetrates into Victorian culture. 'Politics' can lead us into the ideas governing political action itself; political ideas; international relations; the eduction of men and women; the writing of history and of literature; engagement with past political theorists; and the ideas behind professionalization. Such are some of the themes taken up here. The specific occasion for these essays was as a tribute to the memory of the late Colin Matthew, one of the most eminent recent historians of Victorian Britain, who was himself determined to uphold the contemporary relevance of Victorian political tradition, and to explore the interface between 'politics' and 'culture'. Reflection on his intellectual achievement is a second distinctive component of this book.

Book Synopsis Who's who in Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon England by : Richard A. Fletcher
Download or read book Who's who in Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon England written by Richard A. Fletcher and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of an eight-volume series providing short biographies of men and women from Roman to Victorian times, Who’s Who in Roman Britain and Anglo-Saxon England is more than a work of reference: it is a book to read and enjoy. Drawing on the discoveries of archaeologists and other researchers, the author of this volume has prepared over 140 short biographies which convey more than the bare facts of his subjects’ lives: he places them in the contact of their time and evokes what was distinctive and interesting in their personality and achievement. The biographies are arranged in a broadly chronological rather than alphabetical sequence so that the reader may easily browse from one contemporary to the next. The index, with its many cross-references, reveals further linkages between contemporaries. Each volume is a portrait of an age, presenting history in a biographical form which complements the conventional approach.
Book Synopsis Victorious Century by : David Cannadine
Download or read book Victorious Century written by David Cannadine and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-02-20 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping history of nineteenth-century Britain by one of the world's most respected historians. "An evocative account . . .[Cannadine] tells his own story persuasively and exceedingly well.” —The Wall Street Journal To live in nineteenth-century Britain was to experience an astonishing and unprecedented series of changes. Cities grew vast; there were revolutions in transportation, communication, science, and work--all while a growing religious skepticism rendered the intellectual landscape increasingly unrecognizable. It was an exhilarating time, and as a result, most of the countries in the world that experienced these changes were racked by political and social unrest. Britain, however, maintained a stable polity at home, and as a result it quickly found itself in a position of global leadership. In this major new work, leading historian David Cannadine has created a bold, fascinating new interpretation of nineteenth-century Britain. Britain was a country that saw itself at the summit of the world and, by some measures, this was indeed true. It had become the largest empire in history: its political stability positioned it as the leader of the new global economy and allowed it to construct the largest navy ever built. And yet it was also a society permeated with doubt, fear, and introspection. Repeatedly, politicians and writers felt themselves to be staring into the abyss and what is seen as an era of irritating self-belief was in fact obsessed with its own fragility, whether as a great power or as a moral force. Victorious Century is a comprehensive and extraordinarily stimulating history--its author catches the relish, humor and staginess of the age, but also the dilemmas faced by Britain's citizens, ones we remain familiar with today.
