Book excerpt: Army transformation should not be a "one size fits all" process. Each of the Army's surviving corps has a unique origin. Relevance to present and future conflict environments requires multiple destinations. Ultimately, separate transformations are required to move from distinct origins to diverse destinations. Today's U.S. Army corps have their roots in Napoleon's corps d'armée and the corps formed during the American Civil War. Corps and divisions vanished after the Civil War. Divisions were resurrected on the eve of U.S. entry to World War I, but corps returned later as large tactical headquarters during the preparation for World War II. The Cold War, with its large standing Army, mature coalitions, extensive network of modern infrastructure in what was expected to be the primary theater of war, and known enemy with known doctrine and known order of battle, made corps the U.S. Army's principal warfighting command. Today these conditions no longer hold. Given this, should corps retain their preeminent role? Should corps survive at all? The answer is unequivocally "yes." But what role should they play and what relationship should they have with echelons above and below? There is no single answer that applies across the Army. Whither corps? In the face of small budgets and high operating tempo, resistance to change is self destructive. The Army must remain relevant, or it will continue to lose in the budget competition. But relevance to what? Some argue for relevance to the many expected small wars at the expense of the ability to fight "big" wars. Others argue for maintaining a "big war" capability for unexpected but high stakes conflicts, at the risk of appearing irrelevant to the frequent small wars. Still others argue that relevance is determined by the ability to fight America's "big wars" 20 years hence. Regardless of where relevance for ground forces is found, most agree that relevance will be determined in the context of joint forces. In any case, organization will matter. Refining the shape and function of corps will be a vital part of the broader process of Army transformation.

This book was released on 2023-11-23 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book tells about the events pre-, during, and post the great Polish revolution. It describes the prerequisites of the war, the analysis of the political and social situation, and the complete account of the revolution from the perspective of an eyewitness. Being an experienced participant of Napoleonic wars, Hordynskiy gives an expert assessment of the flaws and wins of the revolution, tells about the chief leaders such as Marshal Diebitsch, Prince Wirtemberg, and others. Since this book is a memoir, it is full of interesting details, not typical for the official records—a valuable source for reference for everyone interested in the history of the events described. Joseph Hordynski (1792 – 1840) was a Polish Sapper Corps officer, an experienced veteran of the Napoleon wars, and an active participant of November 1830 Upraising. Being forced to flee after the November events, he emigrated to the United States, where he created and published the memoirs of the Polish revolution. After, he moved to France to continue for his fight for Poland.

Book excerpt: As the German army moved swiftly into its start positions at the beginning of the First World War, efficiently and seamlessly forming up for the hammer blow that was to fall on France it must have been with some pride that General Ludendorff would look upon the first grand strategical plan that he had a hand in. A cool, calculating planner dedicated to ensuring that chance played as little a part in war as possible General Erich Ludendorff was the product of the prestigious German Kriegsakademie. His memoirs on the First World War are an excellently detailed account of the planning and execution of the ambitious German High command and their thirst for Victory Although known primarily as staff officer his initial service, in the German army, during the war, was at the siege of Liège for which he was awarded the coveted Pour La Mérite by the Kaiser himself. He was rushed to the embattled Eastern Front as Chief of Staff to General von Hindenburg, and the two made an impressive team winning that battles of Tanneburg and the Masurian Lakes. Once again Ludendorff, this time was his chief Hindenburg, was drafted in as a replacement to ensure the fortunes of the German forces, this time on the Western front in 1916. He operated as the prime mover in the German empire from this point until the end of the war; masterminding the 1918 offensives as the last throw of the dice before capitulation. This first volume covers his early career until 1917 and is enriched with maps of the campaigns of the First World War. Author — General Erich Friedrich Wilhelm Ludendorff, 1865-1937. Translator — Anon. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in New York and London, Harper & Brothers, 1919. Original Page Count – 477 pages

Book excerpt: "When published in 1848 this edited version of the Marquess of Londonderry's celebrated history of this consequential period was issued to 'present to the English nation' an affordable chronicle of one of the most glorious chapters of European history up to the battle of Wateloo. The narrative is a faithful history detailing the formidable struggles and ultimate victories of the Peninsular War." "This is an account of the Peninsular War in Europe, drawing on the vast knowledge and research of the Marquess of Londonderry. This edition is illuminating, accessible and readily informative, making it a marvellous read for both the dedicated student and interested reader." "It must be remembered when reading the edition that The Marquess of Londonderry took an active part in the great struggle he describes so beautifully. At the time he was working closely with the War Minister of the day, and it is this working relationship that gives this edition observations and perceptions of the war that would have been unavailable to others at the time of conflict. The Marquess recorded his impressions of the war daily, as they occurred."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Table of Contents: Days to Remember: The British Empire in the Great War The Battle of Jutland The Battle of the Somme, First Phase The Battle of the Somme, Second Phase Nelson's History of the War (Volumes I–V) "The definite history of this war is not now to be written, or for many a day. Still it may be possible to disentangle from this struggle of armed nations over hundreds of miles some explicit narrative which may help all of us who are hungering for help and guidance. At present we do not authentically know even the subtle causes which produced this convulsion over half the world. What is on the surface is clear enough, but it is what is under the surface that matters. I am reluctant to believe in a diabolical and cold-blooded scheme to bring about war at this time; at least, this does not seem to be proved. We must, then, I think, suspend our judgment as to the real causes of war till time and documents give us the clue. Perhaps the pregnant word "mobilization" may explain much. Meanwhile we can only conjecture by the light of a few facts..." (Excerpt; Nelson's History of the War) John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and also served as Canada's Governor General. With the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan worked as a correspondent in France for The Times.

Download or read book The Handbook of British Regiments (Routledge Revivals) written by Christopher Chant and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the creation of the standing army in 1661, when each regiment was known by the name of its current colonel, there have been many reforms and rationalizations of the British army. From 31 cavalry regiments and 113 infantry regiments in 1881, at the time of this title’s first publication in 1988, the army had reduced to just 16 regiments of armour and 39 regiments of infantry through processes of absorption and amalgamation. The Handbook of British Regiments provides insight into the lineage and history of the approximately 85 regiments and corps which formed the British army towards the end of the 1980s. Comprehensive in coverage, each has a separate entry giving factual details in a layout standardized for easy comparison, including current title, colonel-in-chief, uniform and history, amongst others. A key title amongst Routledge reference reissues, this handbook provides an accessible guide to specialists as well as lay enthusiasts, and illustrates a sense of the continuity and inherited tradition of each regiment and corps.
