Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Whitewater Valley Railroad is a historic line in scenic southeastern Indiana. It was completed to Connersville in 1867, linking the towns of the Whitewater Valley to Cincinnati over the former towpath of the Whitewater Canal (18361862). Originally named the White Water Valley Railroad, the line went through several name changes before being absorbed by the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis (the Big Four) in 1890 and later by the New York Central, the parent company of the Big Four. After merging with the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1968, the line became the Penn Central before closing in 1972 between Brookville and Connersville. It was slated for abandonment when a group of volunteers stepped in to create the Whitewater Valley Railroad, which ran its first tourist passenger trains in 1974. The nonprofit volunteer organization celebrates its 40th anniversary of operations in 2014.

It helps to answer the questions of train passengers who ask, "Where are we and what once happened here?" The Indiana route used by the Whitewater Valley Railroad has a long transportation history. It started as the Whitewater River, then became the White Water Valley Canal. By 1865, railroads took over. Once operated by New York Central's "Big Four" - Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway - today the line between Connersville and Metamora is operated by the Whitewater Valley Railroad, a tourist railroad providing service to the former canal town of Metamora. This book provides information on the railroad's history and equipment, as well as a mile-by-mile guide.

Book excerpt: This book is about a real American Hero who received the Carnegie Hero Medal for Bravery. Its also about his son who grew up in SMALL TOWN U.S.A. along side of him. One of the greatest gifts we were given as kids was a vast supply of natural resources like the small creeks, ponds, lakes and woods that hemmed in our rural towns and communities. Without fear or care we were blessed to have the freedom to play, roam, and take advantage of Gods limitless creation nature was our backyard. My dad introduced me as a youngster to these wonderful privileges. In this day of peer pressure, video games, cell phones, high speed internet, availability of drugs and other temptations, it is intended as a challenge to inspire, and encourage, young people today who are growing up in small towns all over America, to get out doors and take advantage of all the natural resources you have around you.

This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passenger train has long held a special place in the imagination of Americans, and Indiana was once a bustling passenger train crossroads. Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838–1971 brings to life the countless locals, accommodation trains, and secondary expresses that Hoosiers patronized during the Golden Age of the passenger train. Craig Sanders gives us a comprehensive history of intercity passenger service in Indiana, from the time railroads began to develop in the state in the mid-19th century through May 1, 1971, when Amtrak began operations. Each chapter summarizes the history and development of one railroad, discusses the factors that shaped that railroad's passenger service—such as prolonged financial difficulties, competition, and the influence of a strong leader—and concludes with a detailed account of its passenger operations in Indiana. Sixteen maps, 87 photographs, and other evocative illustrations supplement Sanders's text.
