Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The achievements and legacy of the Wolfensohn Center for Development at Brookings The Imperative of Development highlights the research and policy analysis produced by the Wolfensohn Center for Development at Brookings. The Center, which operated from 2006 to 2011, was the first home at Brookings for research on international development. It sought to help identify effective solutions to key development challenges in order to create a more prosperous and stable world. Founded by James and Elaine Wolfensohn, the Center’s mission was to “to create knowledge that leads to action with real, scaled-up, and lasting development impact.” This volume reviews the Center’s achievements and lasting legacy, combining highlights of its most important research with new essays that examine the context and impact of that research. Six primary research streams of the Wolfensohn Center’s work are highlighted in The Imperative of Development: the shifting structure of the world economy in the twenty-first century; the challenge of scaling up the impact of development interventions; the effectiveness of development assistance; how to promote economic and social inclusion for Middle Eastern youth; the case for investing in early child development; and the need for global governance reform. In each chapter, a scholar associated with the particular research topic provides an overview of the issue and its broader context, then describes the Center’s work on the topic and the subsequent influence and impact of these efforts. The Imperative of Development chronicles the growth and expansion of the first center for development research in Brookings’s 100-year history and traces how the seeds of this initiative continue to bear fruit. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preparation of suitably qualified teachers is vital for political, social and economic growth in developing countries. Some major problems have been caused by the enormous growth in primary enrolment and by the need to train more teachers without reducing standards, exacerbated by the fact that in many cases the structure of teacher education is still in its formative stages. However, these problems can lead to innovative options and solutions. Originally published in 1988, this book reports on research and practice in teacher education around the world. It examines, for example, what happens to teacher education at times of great social change or political unrest, as in South Africa or Cyprus, how programmes in, for example, Nigeria or China approach minority education and how teachers are prepared for the teaching of indigenous populations such as the Saskatchevan Indians in Canada. These examples of international teacher education practice are presented within a specific national, regional and cultural context and provide important perspectives on the traditional views of how teachers are and should be prepared and professionally maintained. The book will be of interest to all involved in teacher education, adult education and curriculum design as well as to students of development studies.

Book excerpt: Recommendations aimed at a more just educational dispensation in the RSA were put forward in the report of the Main Committee of the 1981 HSRC Investigation into Education, Provision of Education in the RSA. This follow-up investigation considers the extent to which the recommendations put forward in 1981 have since been implemented. The HSRC recommendations on the principles, management structure, educational structure, supportive structures and programmes for educational provision was followed up with regard to the formal education sector, and by means of a literature study. Official policy documents, legislation, annual reports of government departments and other sources were consulted. It was found that new legislation enabled the implementation of the recommendations on educational principles and management - but in a predetermined political dispensation. Different education departments handled the HSRC recommendations on other aspects in different ways. A new look at issues surrounding educational provision was necessitated by the advent of a new political dispensation, and much of the 1981 recommendations seemed to be reflected in the official proposals for educational renewal recntly put forward by educational planners and executive officers. Further implementation would also depend on the interaction between political, economic and social factors.
