Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Magic Lantern is one of those rare books that capture history in the making, written by an author who was witness to some of the most remarkable moments that marked the collapse of Communism in Eastern Europe. Timothy Garton Ash was there in Warsaw, on 4 June, when the communist government was humiliated by Solidarity in the first semi-free elections since the Second World War. He was there in Budapest, twelve days later, when Imre Nagy - thirty-one years after his execution - was finally given his proper funeral. He was there in Berlin, as the Wall opened. And most remarkable of all, he was there in Prague, in the back rooms of the Magic Lantern theatre, with Václav Havel and the members of Civic Forum, as they made their 'Velvet Revolution'.

Book excerpt: "America's New Alliesgives readers an informative and incisive analysis of the contribution that NATO's three new members will be making to enhance Euro-Atlantic security. The book provides a timely refutation to all the nay-sayers who failed to understand that NATO's enlargement greatly enhances the prospects of a secure and peaceful Europe."--Zbigniew Brzezinski, Center for Strategic and International Studies "By examining the expansion of NATO as a process of post-communist integration,America's New Alliesmakes a significant contribution to our understanding of East Central Europe's role in our common security future."--Norman M. Naimark, Stanford University America's New Alliescomprehensively analyzes the strengths and liabilities that accompany the 1999 addition of three former Soviet satellite nations--Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic--to the ranks of the 16-member North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This controversial enlargement of NATO formalizes the new geopolitical realities in Eastern Europe and forces the U.S. military to confront the prospect of defending these former enemies against armed attack. This round of enlargement is part of a larger restructuring of NATO underway since the end of the Cold War and tested by NATO's 1999 action in Kosovo. The current enlargement--together with the prospect of adding other countries to NATO and the unprecedented institutional challenges highlighted during the Kosovo conflict--represents a defining moment for the emerging post-Cold War security architecture and, in turn, for the long-term relationship between the United States and Europe. The issues discussed inAmerica's New Allieswill be vigorously debated for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis The Handbook of European Defence Policies and Armed Forces by : Hugo Meijer
Download or read book The Handbook of European Defence Policies and Armed Forces written by Hugo Meijer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 997 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The armed forces of Europe have undergone a dramatic transformation since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Handbook of European Defence Policies and Armed Forces provides the first comprehensive analysis of national security and defence policies, strategies, doctrines, capabilities, and military operations, as well as the alliances and partnerships of European armed forces in response to the security challenges Europe has faced since the end of the cold war. A truly cross-European comparison of the evolution of national defence policies and armed forces remains a notable blind spot in the existing literature. The Handbook of European Defence Policies and Armed Forces aims to fill this gap with fifty-one contributions on European defence and international security from around the world. The six parts focus on: country-based assessments of the evolution of the national defence policies of Europe's major, medium, and lesser powers since the end of the cold war; the alliances and security partnerships developed by European states to cooperate in the provision of national security; the security challenges faced by European states and their armed forces, ranging from interstate through intra-state and transnational; the national security strategies and doctrines developed in response to these challenges; the military capabilities, and the underlying defence and technological industrial base, brought to bear to support national strategies and doctrines; and, finally, the national or multilateral military operations by European armed forces. The contributions to The Handbook collectively demonstrate the fruitfulness of giving analytical precedence back to the comparative study of national defence policies and armed forces across Europe.

Download or read book Czech Republic written by and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the end of 1995, the Czech Republic was regarded as the clearest success story in the region. It had one of the lowest rates of inflation and the lowest rates of unemployment. The high GDP growth rate looked sustainable, as it was accompanied by a moderate current account deficit, balanced fiscal account and seemed to be underpinned by important structural reform." The Czech Republic was perceived until 1996 as the most successful transition economy in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). The Czech Republic seems to be the clearest success story in the region. However, the Czech miracle came to a halt in May 1997. Its future economic development and successful integration into the European Union (EU) depends critically on its capacity to recover a sustainable output growth path. To assist the country in achieving its primary goal to join the European Union (EU) in the shortest period of time, this report analyzes economic developments in the Czech Republic since 1997. It focuses on assessing the status of the Czech Republic's economy from the perspective of its pursuit for EU membership. The report is composed of two volumes. The first volume is the summary report that condenses main findings and conclusions. The second volume is the main report. It provides the assessment and technical study of selected key sectors of the Czech economy. The EU accession process dominates the sector analyses, which are outlined in each chapter.
Book Synopsis The Czech Language in the Digital Age by : Georg Rehm
Download or read book The Czech Language in the Digital Age written by Georg Rehm and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-07-18 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This white paper is part of a series that promotes knowledge about language technology and its potential. It addresses educators, journalists, politicians, language communities and others. The availability and use of language technology in Europe varies between languages. Consequently, the actions that are required to further support research and development of language technologies also differ for each language. The required actions depend on many factors, such as the complexity of a given language and the size of its community. META-NET, a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission, has conducted an analysis of current language resources and technologies. This analysis focused on the 23 official European languages as well as other important national and regional languages in Europe. The results of this analysis suggest that there are many significant research gaps for each language. A more detailed expert analysis and assessment of the current situation will help maximise the impact of additional research and minimize any risks. META-NET consists of 54 research centres from 33 countries that are working with stakeholders from commercial businesses, government agencies, industry, research organisations, software companies, technology providers and European universities. Together, they are creating a common technology vision while developing a strategic research agenda that shows how language technology applications can address any research gaps by 2020.
