Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It's kind of an odd thing, really, because it's not like I'm one or the other, or like I fit here or there, but I kind of also fit everywhere. And nowhere. All at once. You know?" — Florence "My racial identity, I would have to say, is multiracial. I am of the future. I believe there is going to come a day when a very, very large majority of everybody in the world is going to be mixed with more than one race. It's going to be multiracial for everybody. Everybody and their mother!" — Jack Kristen A. Renn offers a new perspective on racial identity in the United States, that of mixed race college students making sense of the paradox of deconstructing racial categories while living on campuses sharply divided by race and ethnicity. Focusing on how peer culture shapes identity in public and private spaces, the book presents the findings of a qualitative research study involving fifty-six undergraduates from a variety of institutions. Renn uses an innovative ecology model to examine campus peer cultures and documents five patterns of multiracial identity that illustrate possibilities for integrating notions of identity construction (and deconstruction) with the highly salient nature of race in higher education. One of the most ambitious scholarly attempts to date to portray the diverse experiences and identities of mixed race college students, the book also discusses implications for higher education practice, policy, theory, and research.
Book Synopsis Exploring White Racial Identity Development Within Christian Colleges and Universities by : Glen Kinoshita
Download or read book Exploring White Racial Identity Development Within Christian Colleges and Universities written by Glen Kinoshita and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College is a time when racial identity development typically occurs in a student's life. However, the fact that most evangelical Christian colleges and universities are dominantly White may hinder this process, making it difficult for White students to engage in their racial development. The purpose of this qualitative, narrative study was to understand how White students who have undergone significant identity development described their racial identity while attending dominantly White, evangelical Christian colleges and universities in the United States. A total of 9 White student participants were interviewed, 3 participants each from 3 Christian colleges/universities; 2 colleges/universities were located in Southern California and 1 in the Pacific Northwest. Each participant was interviewed for up to an hour and 2 participants were interviewed a second time. Established racial identity models for White people were utilized as theoretical frameworks for this study. The participant narratives revealed a shared chronological sequence as they described how their racial identity developed (precollege, entry into college, experiencing racial disequilibrium, and conceptualizing identity). The participant narratives also identified factors that facilitated their racial identity development and factors that were obstacles to their racial identity development while attending their Christian college or university. Both factors had external and internal dimensions. The combination of factors that facilitated and were obstacles to racial identity development with external and internal dimensions resulted in 4 major categories that described how racial identity development occurred for the participants. Other findings that arose from participant narratives were that racial identity development occurred alongside a variety of other formation processes. Participants' described their racial identity formation occurring in relation to ethnic, cognitive, spiritual, and intercultural development. Participant narratives also revealed that their racial identity development occurred in the midst of relationship with others. Participants described having conversations with a friend on a one-on-one basis, in the midst of a community, and with a faculty or staff person, all who offered insights on matters of race and racial identity while conveying support and affirmation to the participants.

Book excerpt: Enrollments of non-Black students at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have recently increased as a result of recent court mandates requiring public HBCUs to diversify their student bodies. As these numbers continue to increase, very little research has been done that examines the racial consciousness aspects of identity development of White students attending HBCUs where issues of race, gender, privilege, and power likely intersect. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the racial consciousness development of White male undergraduate students attending a historically and predominantly Black university through their academic and social experiences. Bronfenbrenner's (2005) bioecological systems theory of human development was used as the guiding framework to explore how the participants made meaning of their experiences in an environment where they were the "temporary minority" (Hall & Closson, 2005). Four significant themes emerged from the data which were: influence of family and neighborhoods, classroom environments, social environments, and greater awareness of race and privilege. Conclusions, limitations, implications, and recommendations for future research are also presented.
