Book Synopsis Don't Shoot the Albatross! by : Jonathan Eyers
Download or read book Don't Shoot the Albatross! written by Jonathan Eyers and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2012-12-19 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sailors are a notoriously superstitious lot - even if some won't admit it. Years of taking to the water, at the mercy of uncontrollable (and sometimes deadly) forces, have led even the wisest to seek ways of influencing the gods or fate. From bad omens and odd rituals to lucky tokens and forbidden words, the superstitions of the sea are legion. Many of these superstitions have refused to go away and quite a few have entered the general public consciousness. Some are amusing in their own right, others have fascinating origins, whilst for many there are bizarre anecdotal incidents which would appear to lend credence to these arcane beliefs. Illustrated with quirky cartoons, this book explores nautical superstitions from all over the world in an informative yet entertaining way. Includes superstitions about: Boatbuilding, naming and launching; Lucky and unlucky dates to sail; People, things and animals not to let on board; Signs and portents at sea; Words not to say (and their alternatives); Predicting the weather; Fishing; and much, much more!

Download or read book Enemy of the Tzar written by Lester S. Taube and published by CCB Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is Tzarist Lithuania in 1904. Hanna Barlak is an 18-year-old seamstress in a small village, the sole support of three young siblings. She is in love with Stephen, a Russian university student. Innocently implicated in a plot against the Tzar, she must flee her homeland with Jakob, a Hasidic prince. In Germany, she learns that Stephen and the children have suddenly disappeared, and that the dreaded Okhrana, the Russian secret police, have sworn revenge. Using her sewing abilities, she builds up her trade, spending all she earns to protect Jakob and herself from the Okhrana and to search for her loved ones. World War I makes her a wealthy woman, and in later years, she becomes a tycoon fighting for her very existence against the Krupp Munitions Cartel, her emotional feelings for Bernard, a Dutch doctor, and the wrath of the Nazi regime, whose goal is to destroy her. About the Author Lester Taube was born of Russian and Lithuanian immigrants in Trenton, New Jersey. He began soldiering in a horse artillery regiment while in his teens, where in four years he rose from the grade of private to the exalted rank of private first class. During World War II, he became an infantry platoon leader and participated in operations in the Bismarck Archipelago, was attached to the 3rd Marines for action on Iwo Jima, and finally combat on Okinawa, the last battle of the war. After leaving the army and recuperating from wounds and malaria, he became general manager of a 400 employee electronic company in California, manager of a 450 employee paper stock company in Pennsylvania, and finally opened a logging and pulpwood cutting operation in Canada. Called back to duty during the Korea Police Action, he served as an advisor to the Turkish army, then as an intelligence officer and company commander in Korea. During the Vietnam period, he was stationed in France and Germany as a general staff officer working in intelligence and war plans. Prior to retirement as a full colonel, he moved to a small village in the mountains of North Tyrol, Austria, and kept a boat for five years on the Cote d'Azur, France. He began writing novels while in France, and after producing four books, which were published in a number of countries, and selling two for motion pictures, he stopped - "as there was heavy soldiering to do and children to raise." Returning to the U.S. after 13 years overseas, he worked as an economic development specialist for the State of New Jersey helping companies move to New Jersey or expand therein. He has four children, all born in different countries.
Book Synopsis A Poet's Sketch of His Biography by : Dean Nichols
Download or read book A Poet's Sketch of His Biography written by Dean Nichols and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2004-09-24 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sensitive collection of poetry and prose, the essence of the writer's life is revealed. This is not a biography based on dates and events. Chronology is here measured by a man's inner growth, by the things he holds most dear. We are told of the attitudes, ideals, hopes, and dreams that make Dean Nichols unique and lend depth and power to his poetry. Drawing upon personal experience, as all poets must, Mr. Nichols admits us into a world that is enveloped with love. We feel it in tender notes to a friend, in brief phrases expressing his awe of nature and love of God, in lines that illumine his deepest feelings for his family, and in images that reflect his deepest understanding and most soaring aspirations. Many of the pieces in 'A Poet's Sketch of His Biography' are devoted to the author's beloved Alaska - the people, the harsh and beautiful land, and the sense of raw power and urgency in this pioneer state. He writes of the fishermen of Cordova, of the FAA air-controllers working a vast area of wilderness, of the warmth of home, of love. In his previous book, Dean Nichols told us that he would invite no one to share the mainland of his life; rather, he shared with us a few islands of his experience - a glimpse of an untraveled world. That his world has grown since he wrote those words is happily apparent in 'A Poet's Sketch of His Biography'.

Book Synopsis Deep, Deep in the Rough, Rough by : Lory Smith
Download or read book Deep, Deep in the Rough, Rough written by Lory Smith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-02-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DEEP, DEEP in the ROUGH, ROUGH is a golf comedy about a golf match conceived by four wealthy members of the famous Burning Bridges Golf Club, who, in a drunken bet, hire four amiable losers to play a golf match like no other, a throwback to the earliest days of golf -- through 4 states, over 40 days and covering 400 miles -- through the wilderness! Accompanying the unlikely foursome is a crusty old codger named Cookie, driving a team of horses and a tricked-out Conestoga wagon and the scorekeepers of the game, an ex-KGB couple named Boris and Ludmilla representing the Royal and Ancient Golf Union, the owners of the rules of golf. What starts out a crazy bet soon becomes a worldwide sensation as the bizarro foursome and their epic golf match are covered by the television sports reporter Donna Dina and her intrepid cameraman. What transpires is a golf match of biblical proportions, through the area known as the Four Corners, where New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona share a border, but not a golf course in hundreds of miles! Through the wide use of the players dreams and fantasies, as well as a wild concoction of memorable characters they meet along the way, this unlikely journey highlights the deeper meanings of the game of golf and ultimately leads to bonds of love and friendship no one could have ever imagined. Deep, Deep in the Rough, Rough could forever change the nature of golf and, perhaps, golf in nature. Hold on to your golf carts because this is one wild ride you will never forget.
Book Synopsis The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking by : Matthew Hutson
Download or read book The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking written by Matthew Hutson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-04-12 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this witty and perceptive debut, a former editor at Psychology Today shows us how magical thinking makes life worth living. Psychologists have documented a litany of cognitive biases- misperceptions of the world-and explained their positive functions. Now, Matthew Hutson shows us that even the most hardcore skeptic indulges in magical thinking all the time-and it's crucial to our survival. Drawing on evolution, cognitive science, and neuroscience, Hutson shows us that magical thinking has been so useful to us that it's hardwired into our brains. It encourages us to think that we actually have free will. It helps make us believe that we have an underlying purpose in the world. It can even protect us from the paralyzing awareness of our own mortality. In other words, magical thinking is a completely irrational way of making our lives make rational sense. With wonderfully entertaining stories, personal reflections, and sharp observations, Hutson reveals our deepest fears and longings. He also assures us that it is no accident his surname contains so many of the same letters as this imprint.
Book Synopsis The Pirate Dictionary by : Breverton, Terry
Download or read book The Pirate Dictionary written by Breverton, Terry and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-31 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We hear the terms steer clear of, hit the deck, don't rock the boat , and to harbor a grudge and give little thought to their origin. Left together on ships for months, and often for years, pirate crews developed expressions that made their way into common usage. Terms for things related to life at sea became idioms used by land lubbers, a term derived from the holes in the platforms surrounding the mast that allowed sailors to avoid climbing the rigging around the platforms. A lubber was someone who was very clumsy, so a land lubber is someone who knows nothing about sailing and rigging.Centuries ago, men wore wigs of length denoting their wealth and importance. Soon, many naval captains, including Sir Henry Morgan and Captain Chaloner Ogle, who killed Black Bart Roberts, began to adopt the style. A law was passed in England declaring that only nobility, judges, and bishops could wear full-length wigs and so was born the term bigwig .Reading through these words and phrases is an abbreviated trip through history, with lists of major naval mutinies, a summary of the slave trade, and even jokes. This dictionary is written to be entertaining as well as informative, to give a flavor of the interesting times from the fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries when pirates controlled many sealanes. It also contains a treasure trove of factual information about life aboard the ship, important pirate haunts, and technical terms.

Book Synopsis Paul O'Grady's Country Life by : Paul O'Grady
Download or read book Paul O'Grady's Country Life written by Paul O'Grady and published by Random House. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER A fascinating and hilarious glimpse into Paul's life at home in the country with his animals Paul O'Grady's Country Life for the first time gives a glimpse into the home life of one of Britain’s best loved stars, alongside the animals he adores. Sometimes rural idyll, sometimes hell on earth, Paul’s life in rural Kent has been shared over the years with some very vocal pigs, a mad cow, various rescued barn owls, the world’s most sadistic geese and Christine the psychotic sheep – among many other animal waifs and strays. And of course Paul tells the stories of the dogs in his life – including the tiny chihuahua/Jack Russell cross with Napoleonic ambitions, Eddie, Miss Olga, Bullseye, Louis, Boycie and, of course, Buster, the greatest canine star since Lassie. In addition, Paul shares some of his favourite recipes, explores country lore and superstitions, and extols the benefits of growing your own vegetables, herbs and fruit. This is a warts-and-all account of country living, as far removed from the bright lights of celebrity as you could ever imagine. The trials and tribulations Paul experienced on moving to deepest darkest Kent as a dyed-in-the-wool city dweller are every bit as hilarious and eventful as you would think. He had a lot of new skills to learn, and fast: everything from how to churn your own butter and how to birth a lamb to the best way to lure a cow out of your kitchen while naked from the waist down. Brilliantly funny and full of classic stories, Paul O’Grady’s Country Life is your armchair guide to the wonders and horrors of rural existence. _____________________________ Readers love Paul O’Grady’s Country Life: ***** ‘This book is excellent. It will make you laugh out loud and it will make you cry.’ ***** ‘Delightful read. An insight into Paul O’Gradys country life, told in his true fashion. Couldn’t put it down!’ ***** ‘I think he has a gift of compassion for animals as well as people and it always shines through.’

Book Synopsis Breverton's Nautical Curiosities by : Terry Breverton
Download or read book Breverton's Nautical Curiosities written by Terry Breverton and published by Quercus. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Breverton's Nautical Curiosities is about ships, people and the sea. However, unlike many other nautical compendiums, the focus of this book is on the unusual, the overlooked or the downright extraordinary. Thus, someone most of us do not know, Admiral William Brown, is given equal coverage to Admiral Nelson. Without Admiral Brown releasing Garibaldi, modern Italy might not exist. And without the barely known genius John Ericsson designing the Monitor, the Confederacy might have won the American Civil War. Readers will be stimulated to read more about the remarkable men--explorers, admirals and trawlermen--who have shaped our world. The sea has had a remarkable effect upon our language. We hear the terms "steer clear," "hit the deck," "don't rock the boat," "to harbor a grudge" and the like, and give little thought to them. In the pages of this book, the reader will find the origin of "bumpkin," a "brace of shakes," "born with a silver spoon," "booby prize," "to take on board," "above board," "bombed" (in the sense of being drunk), the "blues," "blind-side," "blind drunk," "the pot calling the kettle black," "reach the bitter end," "wasters," "ahoy," "all at sea," "to keep aloof," "piss-artist," "taken aback," "barbecue" and "bamboozle." Other colourful terms, which have passed out of common usage, such as "bring one's arse to anchor" (sit down), "belly timber" (food) and "bog orange" (potato) are also included, as well as important pirate haunts, technical terms, famous battles, maritime inventors and ship speed records.
