To this end, high-strength single-crystal whiskers of silicon carbide, silicon nitride, and sapphire have been incorporated into the matrices of barium titanate and lead zirconate titanate ceramics. Results to date indicate that a whisker reinforced ceramic can be fabricated without destroying its piezoelectric or dielectric properties. Although the activity of the whiskered material is somewhat lower than that of comparable pure ceramic, indications are that further developmental work will eradicate this deficiency. (Author).

Book excerpt: The introduction of sapphire whisker reinforcement to Type I, II, and III piezoelectric ceramic compositions has resulted in dynamic strength increases up to 500% of nonreinforced counterparts. Attendant benefits include improved aging characteristics, reduced dielectric losses, increased dielectric strength, and improved large signal piezoelectric properties and performance. Gamma radiation of nonreinforced materials produced up to 30% increases in dynamic strength while degrading strength of reinforced counterparts. (Author).

Book excerpt: The properties under high drive conditions of disc specimens of whisker reinforced composite ceramics are compared with the similar properties of commercially available non-reinforced ceramics of the same general family. The ceramics are of the lead zirconate titanate type, with the whisker content of two grades of alpha alumina (sapphire) in five weight per cent amount. Observations are made of stress, strain, electric field, resonant frequency, modulus, and electrical impedance. It is found that the whisker reinforced materials exhibit good linearity of stress, strain, resonant frequency, and modulus at high drive when compared with commercial samples of the same family, which are often markedly nonlinear. The conclusion is drawn that specimens, even of 'soft' type ceramic, when whisker reinforced, are made 'hard' in many of their properties. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new whisker reinforced piezoelectric ceramic was made which exhibits good properties as a trasducer material. The most successful material to date is a lead zirconate titanate composite with a sapphire whisker additive, prepared by a cold press and sinter technique. Measurement of the dielectric permittivity, dielectric loss tangent, electromechanical coupling factor, and mechanical Q are reported for some of these first available samples. Indications are that whisker containing samples undergo different aging processes than nonwhisker containing samples, as indicated by the activation energy for domain wall motion. Measurements of the pyroelectric effect indicate that the whisker containing samples are under large compressive stresses at room temperature. Some comments on possible advantageous properties of this new material are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: Piezoelectric Ceramics focuses on the relationship between piezoelectricity and ferroelectricity as they apply to ceramics, taking into consideration the properties of materials that are being used and possibly be used in the industries. Composed of 12 chapters, the book starts by tracing the history of piezoelectricity and how this affects ceramics. The different measurement techniques are discussed, including dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric measurements. The book proceeds by discussing Perovskite structure and barium titanate. Covered areas include electric field, piezoelectric properties, particle size effect, and dielectric strength. The properties, compositions, and reactions of various perovskites are discussed. Numerical analyses are presented in this regard. The book also offers interpretations of the experiments conducted. The discussions end with the processes involved in the manufacture and applications of piezoelectric ceramics. Concerns in manufacturing include calcination, grinding, mixing, electroding, firing, and quality control. Piezolectric ceramics are applied in air transducers, instrument transducers, delay line transducers, underwater sound ultrasonic power, and wave filters. The book is important for readers interested in doing research on ceramics.

Book excerpt: This book reviews a big window of opportunity for piezoelectric ceramics, such as new materials, material combinations, structures, damages and porosity effects. In addition, applications of sensors, actuators, transducers for ultrasonic imaging, positioning systems, energy harvesting, biomedical and microelectronic devices are described. The book consists of fourteen chapters. The genetic algorithm is used for identification of RLC parameters in the equivalent electrical circuit of piezoelectric transducers. Concept and development perspectives for piezoelectric energy harvesting are described. The characterization of principal properties and advantages of a novel device called ceramic-controlled piezoelectric with a Pt wire implant is included. Bio-compatibility studies between piezoelectric ceramic material and biological cell suspension are exposed. Thus, piezoelectric ceramics have been a very favorable solution as a consequence of its high energy density and the variety of fabrication techniques to obtain bulk or thin films devices. Finally, the readers will perceive a trend analysis and examine recent developments in different fields of applications of piezoelectric ceramics.

Consequently, electronic properties are often difficult to find. This report was prepared in order to present a compilation of reliable data on the electronic and electrical properties of composites. Composites provide an opportunity to tailor the properties to the application; a factor that allows designers an unlimited variety of new materials for new uses. It is this feature that has contributed to the rapid growth of composites. The electrical properties of a composite can be of vital importance in the use or application of the material in a system. The designer therefore, must be able to obtain the necessary electrical or electronic property data to guide him in the materials selection. It is the purpose of this report to assist the designer and engineer in fulfilling that requirement. Properties This report provides a compilation of the most commonly required electronic properties data of structural composites. Thermal properties often influence electrical design; consequently several of these properties are included. The specific properties tabulated are: Arc Resistance Thermal Conductivity Arc Tracking Resistance Linear Thermal Expansion Dielectric Constant Coefficient Dissipation Factor Electrical (Volume) Resistivity Electrical (Volume) Conductivity Other electrical and thermal properties are compiled as the data was made available.

Book excerpt: Piezoelectricity is the ability of certain crystalline materials to develop an electric charge proportional to a mechanical stress. Since its discovery the piezoelectricity effect has found many useful applications, such as the production and detection of sound, generation of high voltages and frequency, microbalances, and ultra fine focusing of optical assemblies. This book reviews the state of art in polycrystalline piezoelectric ceramic materials, which covers the processing, properties, characterisation, and applications of piezoelectric ceramic materials.
