Download or read book Arthur Ashe written by Eric Allen Hall and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Ashe explains how this iconic African American tennis player overcame racial and class barriers to reach the top of the tennis world in the 1960s and 1970s. But more important, it follows Ashe’s evolution as an activist who had to contend with the shift from civil rights to Black Power. Off the court, and in the arena of international politics, Ashe positioned himself at the center of the black freedom movement, negotiating the poles of black nationalism and assimilation into white society. Fiercely independent and protective of his public image, he navigated the thin line between conservatives and liberals, reactionaries and radicals, the sports establishment and the black cause. Eric Allen Hall’s work examines Ashe’s life as a struggle against adversity but also a negotiation between the comforts—perhaps requirements—of tennis-star status and the felt obligation to protest the discriminatory barriers the white world constructed to keep black people "in their place." Drawing on coverage of Ashe’s athletic career and social activism in domestic and international publications, archives including the Ashe Papers, and a variety of published memoirs and interviews, Hall has created an intimate, nuanced portrait of a great athlete who stood at the crossroads of sports and equal justice. "Hall’s elegant and well-paced narrative teases out the contradictions of one of tennis’s most enigmatic characters."—Times Literary Supplement "A strong book on an outstanding topic, it serves as a reminder that Ashe's tragic death has to some extent eclipsed his life's work on behalf of racial equality."—Wall Street Journal "A portrait of Arthur Ashe that shows the fullness of his character—his broad interests, his impressive talents, and his missteps."—New Books in Sports "A remarkable book that will serve as a model for future works in this genre."—Virginia Magazine of History and Biography Eric Allen Hall is an assistant professor of history at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro.

Book Synopsis Chrysler's Turbine Car by : Steve Lehto
Download or read book Chrysler's Turbine Car written by Steve Lehto and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a behind-the-scenes look into the world of automotive research and development in the 1960s, this engaging narrative traces the birth of Chrysler’s alternative “jet” car and reveals the story behind its sudden and mysterious demise. Relying on extensive research and firsthand accounts from surviving members of the turbine car program—including the metallurgist who created the exotic metals for the engine and the test driver who drove it at Chrysler's proving grounds—this chronicle documents the bold development of an automobile with a jet turbine engine. In addition to running well on virtually any flammable liquid—including kerosene, vodka, heating oil, and Chanel N°5 perfume—the pioneering engines had one fifth the number of moving parts and required less maintenance than conventional engines. Despite the fleet’s amazing performance over millions of miles by test drivers, Chrysler pulled the plug on the project and crushed almost all of the cars. The reasons behind the surprising end to the jet car fleet are finally explained here.

Book Synopsis Photosynthetic Rate and Dynamic Environment by : Kazutoshi Yabuki
Download or read book Photosynthetic Rate and Dynamic Environment written by Kazutoshi Yabuki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The association between plants and wind that first comes to mind might be plant damage from a strong wind such as a typhoon or monsoon. The winds this book will 1 discuss, however, are not this strong at all, but rather are only 2 m·s· or weaker, like a breeze that gently blows over a farming area. Such a breeze, in fact, instills vitality into plants and increases their growth rates. This book is an attempt to explain these beneficial effects on plants from a field perspective. One fundamental process necessary for plant growth is photosynthesis. Since it is a photochemical reaction, this synthesis has been studied with emphasis on light. Yet to shed light on dry-matter or carbohydrate production by plants, it is indispensable to pursue research not only into the mechanism of photosynthesis but also into photosynthetic production itself. I have observed various phenomena occurring in the production field, and have thereby realized it necessary to recognize photosynthesis as a phenomenon that carbon dioxide (C0 ) in the air diffuses into chloroplasts in the leaves, and to study 2 which environmental factors promote C0 diffusion into the leaves. 2 In this book, I am going to describe the effects of the natural environment on photosynthetic production, placing focus on the leaf boundary layer as an environmental factor for plant production.
