Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our American Cousin is a three-act play written by English playwright Tom Taylor. The play opened in London in 1858 but quickly made its way to the U.S. and premiered at Laura Keene’s Theatre in New York City later that year. It remained popular in the U.S. and England for the next several decades. Its most notable claim to fame, however, is that it was the play U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was watching on April 14, 1865 when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, who used his knowledge of the script to shoot Lincoln during a more raucous scene. The play is a classic Victorian farce with a whole range of stereotyped characters, business, and many entrances and exits. The plot features a boorish but honest American cousin who travels to the aristocratic English countryside to claim his inheritance, and then quickly becomes swept up in the family’s affairs. An inevitable rescue of the family’s fortunes and of the various damsels in distress ensues. Our American Cousin was originally written as a farce for an English audience, with the laughs coming mostly at the expense of the naive American character. But after it moved to the U.S. it was eventually recast as a comedy where English caricatures like the pompous Lord Dundreary soon became the primary source of hilarity. This early version, published in 1869, contains fewer of that character’s nonsensical adages, which soon came to be known as “Dundrearyisms,” and for which the play eventually gained much of its popular appeal. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: This 3 Act play is a classic Victorian farce, filled with stereotyped characters. Originally intended for British audiences, the characters included a boorish American, however, when the play made it over to America, it was recast to include English figures of mockery, like the pompous Lord Dundreary. This figure gave rise to what became known as Dundrearyisms, which came from the character uttering phrases such as 'birds of a feather gather no moss'. Of particular interest is that U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was watching this play on April 14, 1865 when he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wonderful new collection of tales exploring Henry James's favourite 'international theme': the experiences of Americans in Europe, and the meeting of the old world and new. Daisy Miller is one of Henry James's great heroines - a young, independent American travelling in Europe, whose flouting of social conventions has the potential to lead to disaster. Her story is here accompanied by six more set among English castles, Swiss hotels and French ports, and all riffing on a classic Jamesian theme: the clash between the old world and new, Europe and America. The tales included in this volume are 'Travelling Companions', 'Madame de Mauves', 'Four Meetings', 'Daisy Miller', 'An International Episode', 'Europe' and 'Fordham Castle', and the collection has been edited by renowned scholar of Anglo-American literature, Stephen Fender, under the general editorship of Philip Horne. This is one of three new volumes of James's greatest tales in Penguin Classics, and is accompanied by The Aspern Papers and Other Tales and The Turn of the Screw and Other Tales (forthcoming).

Book excerpt: DEMONBANE begins with an odd seer proclaiming that an outcast maiden named Elandriel will save the land from the iron fist of the Demon Master who has placed the kingdom under a dreadful curse. As Elandrielâs mystic gifts unfold, she undertakes her quest, joined by a motley band of companions. Her mystic gifts continue to burgeon with each battle fought until she is consecrated in her calling by the blessings of Queen Ethyriel in the legendary land of Idannu. Elandriel, like all of us in our more commonplace lives, must bear the harsh realities of existence. Ultimately, Elandriel comes to realize the source of suffering is the evil of this world and what her own destiny is to be: The higher the calling, the greater the sacrifice; the greater the sacrifice, the more severe the suffering; the more severe the suffering, the more glorious the destiny. Elandriel is, as are all historyâs exceptional luminaries, a beacon to light the shadowed paths we tread.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh-day Adventist Church was founded upon an apocalyptic message that needed to be preached to the entire worldimmediately and at any cost. But does the church today preach that same message with the same urgency? Has the Adventist Church become irrelevant because it has sought to be more relevant to the world? Knight challenges us to go back to our roots, to examine the prophecies that fueled the early Seventh-day Adventists' determination to evangelize the world.
