Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Therapeutics of Mineral Springs and Climates This work is divided into two parts. The first is devoted to the study of mineral springs; and as the introductory chapters are concerned with certain general considerations, including the classification of mineral waters, it has been possible to adopt the obviously convenient plan of describing the vast number of mineral-water resorts in alphabetical order, and those resorts that have appeared, for various reasons, to be of minor importance to English invalids have been printed, in smaller type, at the end of each alphabetical group, and described as briefly as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wilderness Cure The publication of the article Camp Lou, in Harper's Jfagazine for May, 1881, has called forth such a flood of inquiries that the author finds it quite beyond his powers to make individual reply to each. Precisely those minor details which could not well be embodied in a magazine paper have been most sought after by correspondents. This little volume, it is believed, contains the information desired. And it is given to the public in the hope that it will be accepted as a general response to the numerous let ters which the writer has received on the subject of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climatic Treatment of Disease: Western North Carolina as a Health Resort Based upon the belief that an aseptic atmosphere is of the first importance in the selection of a climate for the benefit of sufferers from a certain class of diseases, examinations of the atmosphere have been carefully made to demonstrate its purity. Miguel and Freudenreich found that microphytes were rare at 800 metres, and absolutely wanting-at metres above the sea level. For physical reasons, high alti tudes have been believed to be beneficial in early phthisis, and, influenced by the later demonstrationsof a bacillary cause, this aseptic state of the atmos phere is theoretically accepted as promising good results, and sanitary. Stations for mountain-air treat ment of consumptives have been established at sev eral selected points in the Alps, where the comforts of home life are furnished to invalids. Of these health resorts, Davos and St. Moritz are the most popular. St. Moritz is feet and Davosis over feet above the sea level, and the latter has become noted for winter treatment, although the average temperature from November to March' is only 23° F. The number of visitors at Davos last winter was over and careful provision is made for home comfort. The patients are urged to be active out of doors within the limit of fatigue. Each year adds to the number of invalids resorting to these mountain sanitaria, and the statistics show good re sults. It should, however, be borne in mind that the cases sent to these resorts are those selected in the incipient stages of disease, and this is to be taken into the account in the deductions that the recoveries average one-fourth also the time elapsing after the treatment has been too short to determine with accuracy the results. This pertains in criticism to the statistics of other similar localities, but it is by no means an easy task to secure satisfac tory data, and such a problem can never be subjected to a matliematicala analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Prospectus of the Water Cure Establishment at Malvern Be it remarked, that in demolishing the assertions of medical men of the drug-school, we have chie y used their own weapons. We have shown, on the authority of writers recognised by themselves as orthodox, the utter groundlessness of their assertions, and the utter ignorance which dictated them. We have quoted chapter and verse, and, in most in stances, the words of those writers; and it will be necessary to prove the latter to be worthless before the weight of our statements can be diminished by one tittle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spas and Mineral Waters of Europe: With Notes on Balneo-Therapeutic Management in Various Diseases and Morbid Conditions This book is intended to supply some elementary knowledge respecting the Spas of Europe, the methods of treatment adopted there, and the diseases and morbid conditions which are most likely to be cured or ameliorated by them. Although there are already a good many works on the subject, especially in the German and French languages, as a glance at the Bibliography (see end of book) will show, a short work like the present one, in which it is hoped the most general information can easily be found, may be of use to some who have not more elaborate volumes at hand. As much of the effect of mineral water treatment (balneo-therapeutics) cannot be separated from the effect of the external or internal use of plain water (hydro-therapeutics), the first chapter is devoted to a short consideration of hydro-therapeutics in general. Chapters II. and III. deal with the classification and action on the body of mineral waters. In the fourth chapter climate, diet, and altered mode of life are considered, as regards their share in the results obtained by spa treatment; massage and muscular exercises at spas are likewise noticed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrotherapy at Saratoga: A Treatise on Natural Mineral Waters Mineral springs have been known and appreciated from the earliest times, both for drinking and bathing purposes. They have been written upon by Hip pocrates himself, and since the days of Herodotus and Pliny. It is easily con ceded, then, that a treatise upon this subject can in few respects lay claim to originality and, as will be noticed in the text, the author acknowledges a wide obligation to others, and in some instances holds them duly responsible for opinions not coincident with his own, or confirmed by direct experience.
