Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where Three Empires Meet: A Narrative of Recent Travel in Kashmir, Western Tibet, Gilgit, and the Adjoining Countries Various circumstances took me to Kashmir in the spring of 1891. I did not see much of the Happy Valley itself but for the greater part of a year I was travelling among those desolate mountain-tracts that lie to the north of it, where the ranges of the Hindoo Koosh and Karakoram form the boundary between the dominions of the Maharajah and that somewhat vaguely defined region which we call Central Asia. Great changes are now being effected in Kashmir we are actively interfering in the administration of the country, and introducing much-needed reforms, which will produce important results in the immediate future. The affairs of this State are likely soon to attract a good deal of attention, and therefore a description of the country as it is to-day, and some account of the rela tions which exist between the Indian Empire and her tributary, and of the steps that are being taken to safe guard Imperial interests ou that portion of our frontier may not be inopportune. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1891, an intrepid Englishman set out on a year-long journey into the inhospitable region of Gilgit, near what used to be called 'the roof of the world', where the three great empires of that century-the British, Russian and Chinese-came together on the map. Setting out from the beautiful valley of Kashmir, E.F. Knight traversed the mountain tracts between the invincible ranges of Hindukush and Karakoram, interacting with locals and experiencing their way of life first-hand. He brings to his readers the sights and sounds of exotic lands-undivided Kashmir, Western Tibet, Gilgit and the lands beyond. A fascinating travelogue of colonial times, this book also brings out the geo-political significance of the region and the undercurrent of political strategizing at play amongst the three great empires. Knight's visit to Ladakh and subsequent participation in Colonel Durand's historic expedition against the raiding Hunza-Nagara stand out amongst the many adventures he has along the way.

Book Synopsis Britain and Tibet 1765-1947 by : Julie G. Marshall
Download or read book Britain and Tibet 1765-1947 written by Julie G. Marshall and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 658 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is a record of British relations with Tibet in the period 1765 to 1947. As such it also involves British relations with Russia and China, and with the Himalayan states of Ladakh, Lahul and Spiti, Kumaon and Garhwal, Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan and Assam, in so far as British policy towards these states was affected by her desire to establish relations with Tibet. It also covers a subject of some importance in contemporary diplomacy. It was the legacy of unresolved problems concerning Tibet and its borders, bequeathed to India by Britain in 1947, which led to border disputes and ultimately to war between India and China in 1962. These borders are still in dispute today. It also provides background information to Tibet's claims to independence, an issue of current importance. The work is divided into a number of sections and subsections, based on chronology, geography and events. The introductions to each of the sections provide a condensed and informative history of the period and place the books and article in their historical context. Most entries are also annotated. This work is therefore both a history and a bibliography of the subject, and provides a rapid entry into a complex area for scholars in the fields of international relations and military history as well as Asian history.

Book Synopsis Nation, Territory, and Globalization in Pakistan by : Chad Haines
Download or read book Nation, Territory, and Globalization in Pakistan written by Chad Haines and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Karakoram Highway was constructed by the Pakistani state in the 1970s as a major development project that furthered the national interest and solidified state control over the disputed region of northern Pakistan. Focusing on this highway, this book provides a unique analysis of the links between space, travel and history in the formation of the Pakistani nation-state. The book discusses how the highway was a symbol for an imagined national identity, and goes on to look at how it offered Pakistan a pre-Partition history and a fixed territory, by providing a historical link to the Silk Route and a contemporary geographical linkage to Central Asia. Examining the influence of the diverse travellers along the Karakoram Highway, the book shows how global flows of development, trade, labour, and tourism have remapped the Pakistani nation-state and reshaped the local. Providing a fresh perspective on the nation-state of Pakistan, this book is an important contribution to studies on South Asian History, Anthropology, Politics and Geography.
Book Synopsis The British Muslim Convert Lord Headley, 1855-1935 by : Jamie Gilham
Download or read book The British Muslim Convert Lord Headley, 1855-1935 written by Jamie Gilham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first biography of Lord Headley, who made international headlines in 1913 when he defied convention by publicly converting to Islam. Drawing on previously unpublished archival sources, this book focuses on Headley's religious beliefs, conversion to Islam, and work as a Muslim leader during and after the First World War. Lord Headley slipped into obscurity following his death in 1935, but there is growing recognition globally that he is a pivotal figure in the history of Western Islam and Muslim-Christian relations; this book evaluates the strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures of the man and his work, and considers his significance for contemporary understandings of Islam in the Global West.
