Book excerpt: Jessica Hopper's music criticism has earned her a reputation as a firebrand, a keen observer and fearless critic not just of music but the culture around it. With this volume spanning from her punk fanzine roots to her landmark piece on R. Kelly's past, The First Collection leaves no doubt why The New York Times has called Hopper's work "influential." Not merely a selection of two decades of Hopper's most engaging, thoughtful, and humorous writing, this book documents the last 20 years of American music making and the shifting landscape of music consumption. The book journeys through the truths of Riot Grrrl's empowering insurgence, decamps to Gary, IN, on the eve of Michael Jackson's death, explodes the grunge-era mythologies of Nirvana and Courtney Love, and examines emo's rise. Through this vast range of album reviews, essays, columns, interviews, and oral histories, Hopper chronicles what it is to be truly obsessed with music. The pieces in The First Collection send us digging deep into our record collections, searching to re-hear what we loved and hated, makes us reconsider the art, trash, and politics Hopper illuminates, helping us to make sense of what matters to us most.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive undercover look at the terrorist movement no one is talking about. Men Who Hate Women examines the rise of secretive extremist communities who despise women and traces the roots of misogyny across a complex spider web of groups. It includes eye-opening interviews with former members of these communities, the academics studying this movement, and the men fighting back. Women's rights activist Laura Bates wrote this book as someone who has been the target of many hate-fueled misogynistic attacks online. At first, the vitriol seemed to be the work of a small handful of individual men... but over time, the volume and consistency of the attacks hinted at something bigger and more ominous. As Bates went undercover into the corners of the internet, she found an unseen, organized movement of thousands of anonymous men wishing violence (and worse) upon women. In the book, Bates explores: Extreme communities like incels, pick-up artists, MGTOW, Men's Rights Activists and more The hateful, toxic rhetoric used by these groups How this movement connects to other extremist movements like white supremacy How young boys are targeted and slowly drawn in Where this ideology shows up in our everyday lives in mainstream media, our playgrounds, and our government By turns fascinating and horrifying, Men Who Hate Women is a broad, unflinching account of the deep current of loathing toward women and anti-feminism that underpins our society and is a must-read for parents, educators, and anyone who believes in equality for women. Praise for Men Who Hate Women: "Laura Bates is showing us the path to both intimate and global survival."—Gloria Steinem "Well-researched and meticulously documented, Bates's book on the power and danger of masculinity should be required reading for us all."—Library Journal "Men Who Hate Women has the power to spark social change."—Sunday Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The redbud tree that is so prominent in the landscape of eastern Kentucky during the early spring when they are profusely blooming is something that “draws” people back to the mountains. “I want to come back when the redbuds are blooming” is a common refrain from many folks who want to come back home or a stranger who wants to just come and experience the beauty of the mountains. Yet the redbuds are not red; they are a deep pink, and neither are all of the natives of the Appalachian Mountains and the hills of eastern Kentucky lazy, illiterate, apathetic, drug addicts, and generally low-class citizens. But still this region is identified as being a society made up of these individuals. Redbuds Are Not Red is written to illustrate that just as the tree is known for its “red” name, there is a misconception about it. The same is true of the people who are perceived in a negative sense, and this story attempts to describe a region that has good people, respectable and honest people, who need to be seen through a different perspective. It is written to illustrate that despite the poverty, deprivation, and lack of many needed resources, there is a way of life here that is good, decent, and deserving of the same respect and acknowledgment as any other segment of this great nation. People can come out of these hardships and rise to positions of productivity, respectability, and prominence.

Book excerpt: Unprecedented numbers of American women are today learning how to knock out, maim, even kill men who assault them. From behind the scenes of gun ranges, martial arts dojos, fitness centers offering "Cardio Combat", and in padded attacker courses like "Model Mugging", Real Knockouts demonstrates how self-defense trains women out of the femininity that makes them easy targets for men's abuse. And yet much feminist thought, like the broader American culture, seems deeply ambivalent about women's embrace of violence, even in self-defense. Investigating the connection between feminist theory and a woman's balled fist, McCaughey found self-defense culture to embody, literally, a new kind of feminism, one that will change forever the way we think of gender politics, the female body, and feminism itself.

Book excerpt: Inspired by the story of Jael and Deborah in the book of Judges, Jaime Hope McArdle shares her personal journey to a life of purpose and freedom through finding identity as a daughter of the Creator King. She takes on the old stories and passages of the Bible with fresh eyes asking how they impact her life today and challenges her readers to consider becoming freedom fighters-beginning in their own lives and then becoming a force for transformation in the world around them. With chapters titled "A Danger to the Gates of Hell" and "Freedom Fighter," Jaime uncovers the spiritual battle raging under the surface in the world around us and challenges women to reconsider what being in prison looks like and to find the courage to try the door because it cannot be locked. In "The Healing" and "Daughter of a King," she walks through revelation of a true identity that is the right of every woman who will "Choose This Day." This new identity defies the cultural norms for women with "The Greatest Love of All" and calls women to see their power is not in becoming more like men or in manipulation through sexuality. She encourages the power to change the "Operating Systems" that directs everyday life and challenges to accept a new "Assignment" to see life as a daily adventure to bringing love, forgiveness, grace, and freedom to a world growing darker each year. Finally, the assurance of "Getting It Wrong" to know the promise that God will have his way. And as we attempt to follow his call on our life, we can make mistakes and learn. In our triumphs and failures, his grace brings all things together for our good. We can walk confidently through difficult seasons knowing who we are and whose we are. www.jaelfinishingschool.com

Book excerpt: Misogyny is a hot topic, yet it's often misunderstood. What is misogyny, exactly? Who deserves to be called a misogynist? How does misogyny contrast with sexism, and why is it prone to persist - or increase - even when sexist gender roles are waning? This book is an exploration of misogyny in public life and politics by the moral philosopher and writer Kate Manne. It argues that misogyny should not be understood primarily in terms of the hatred or hostility some men feel toward all or most women. Rather, it's primarily about controlling, policing, punishing, and exiling the "bad" women who challenge male dominance. And it's compatible with rewarding "the good ones," and singling out other women to serve as warnings to those who are out of order. It's also common for women to serve as scapegoats, be burned as witches, and treated as pariahs. Manne examines recent and current events such as the Isla Vista killings by Elliot Rodger, the case of the convicted serial rapist Daniel Holtzclaw, who preyed on African-American women as a police officer in Oklahoma City, Rush Limbaugh's diatribe against Sandra Fluke, and the "misogyny speech" of Julia Gillard, then Prime Minister of Australia, which went viral on YouTube. The book shows how these events, among others, set the stage for the 2016 US presidential election. Not only was the misogyny leveled against Hillary Clinton predictable in both quantity and quality, Manne argues it was predictable that many people would be prepared to forgive and forget regarding Donald Trump's history of sexual assault and harassment. For this, Manne argues, is misogyny's oft-overlooked and equally pernicious underbelly: exonerating or showing "himpathy" for the comparatively privileged men who dominate, threaten, and silence women. ^l
