Book excerpt: 'All Moonshine' is a journey through time and history, made by a young girl with a strong sense of her ancestry rooted in a love of the sea and in God's purpose for their lives. As the story unfolds the characters develop enabling us to recognise their strengths and weaknesses. It is about a family who are shaped by great tragedy, cruel hardship, intrigue and Victorian snobbery. Martha Moon's husband and his brother are Master Mariners who loose their lives at sea leaving their wives to provide for their children. When Martha's only son then dies tragically of a deadly disease in Australia, her daughters are left to make the most of their poverty with dignity and the 'hope' of a lost legacy. Matilda, Martha's eldest daughter struggles to bring up nine children with little help from her husband and it is then left to Minnie, her eldest daughter to try to regain lost ground. A feisty character, Minnie is ready to uphold the poor and needy and the rights of both women and children. She surprises everyone by marrying against her principles and looses her home twice to fire, at the same time loosing any hope of motherhood or personal fulfilment; but inspired by her grandmother, she keeps her faith in God and lives to be over a hundred years old. Her brother's daughter, Sabina is the one remaining descendent of the 'Moon" family in England. She has an uncertain future and poor health, but Min sees to it that she will inherit what is left of their legacy, and together they discover that it is 'All Moonshine'.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you fell in love with 1960s North Carolina when reading Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens, Donna Everhart’s The Moonshiner’s Daughter will transport you right back. Everhart’s sensitive and expert storytelling will capture you in this Southern coming-of-age novel! Set in North Carolina in 1960 and brimming with authenticity and grit, The Moonshiner’s Daughter evokes the singular life of sixteen-year-old Jessie Sasser, a young woman determined to escape her family’s past . . . Generations of Sassers have made moonshine in the Brushy Mountains of Wilkes County, North Carolina. Their history is recorded in a leather-bound journal that belongs to Jessie Sasser’s daddy, but Jessie wants no part of it. As far as she’s concerned, moonshine caused her mother’s death a dozen years ago. Her father refuses to speak about her mama, or about the day she died. But Jessie has a gnawing hunger for the truth—one that compels her to seek comfort in food. Yet all her self-destructive behavior seems to do is feed what her school’s gruff but compassionate nurse describes as the “monster” inside Jessie. Resenting her father’s insistence that moonshining runs in her veins, Jessie makes a plan to destroy the stills, using their neighbors as scapegoats. Instead, her scheme escalates an old rivalry and reveals long-held grudges. As she endeavors to right wrongs old and new, Jessie’s loyalties will bring her to unexpected revelations about her family, her strengths—and a legacy that may provide her with the answers she has been longing for.
Book Synopsis Moonshiners and Prohibitionists by : Bruce E. Stewart
Download or read book Moonshiners and Prohibitionists written by Bruce E. Stewart and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-04-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homemade liquor has played a prominent role in the Appalachian economy for nearly two centuries. The region endured profound transformations during the extreme prohibition movements of the nineteenth century, when the manufacturing and sale of alcohol—an integral part of daily life for many Appalachians—was banned. In Moonshiners and Prohibitionists: The Battle over Alcohol in Southern Appalachia, Bruce E. Stewart chronicles the social tensions that accompanied the region's early transition from a rural to an urban-industrial economy. Stewart analyzes the dynamic relationship of the bootleggers and opponents of liquor sales in western North Carolina, as well as conflict driven by social and economic development that manifested in political discord. Stewart also explores the life of the moonshiner and the many myths that developed around hillbilly stereotypes. A welcome addition to the New Directions in Southern History series, Moonshiners and Prohibitionists addresses major economic, social, and cultural questions that are essential to the understanding of Appalachian history.

As luck would have it, however, with his discharge paper still in hand, Larry Jack is offered the job of a lifetime as a revenuer in his homeland of Arkansas County, Arkansas. He is placed in charge of investigating bootleggers and possible drug dealers in the region—and even though he’s a native, he does not receive the warmest of welcomes. Larry Jack’s Arkansas is a bit wild; there are vicious feuds, rough-and-tumble fighting in the honky-tonks, and shootouts on the town square. Despite their personal differences, though, the people of the bayou have one thing in common: distaste for authority figures, which makes his job difficult. His life gets even more interesting when he encounters an old flame by the name of Mary Ann. Meanwhile, it soon becomes apparent in his investigation that Larry Jack isn’t just dealing with local crooks. A crime syndicate is behind the drug-dealing, and in order to convict Larry Jack will have to risk his own life against not only guns but also water moccasins, alligators, and bears. With Mary Ann at his side, he might be able to navigate the bayou, but how will he bring these criminals to justice without ending up with a bullet in the back?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lewis R. Redmond was an archetypal moonshiner. On March 1, 1876, the twenty-one-year-old North Carolinian shot and killed a U.S. deputy marshal who tried to arrest him on charges of illicit distilling. He then fled to Pickens County, South Carolina, where, within three years, he gained national notoriety as the "King of the Moonshiners." More than any other individual moonshiner in southern Appalachia, Redmond captured the imagination of middle-class Americans. Then, as now, media coverage had a lot to do with his reputation.".
