Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first published account of the life of Major General William Phillips, a British officer whose achievements during the American Revolution place him in the ranks of Britain's most successful generals such as Charles Cornwallis. Although he was a commoner, Phillips rose from the rank of cadet in the Royal Artillery Academy, distinguished himself through remarkable achievements in Europe's Seven Years War, and went on to command a field army in America. This story chronicles his extraordinary abilities, leadership, and innovative style which left a lasting mark on British artillery tactics and military leadership. It provides new insights into the captivity of Burgoyne's army, British operations in Virginia in 1781, and the first detailed account of the Battle of Petersburg, Virginia. In this probing biography, suitable for military buffs and historians alike, Davis uncovers new and fascinating materials about Phillips' life, including his connivance with General Cornwallis to change British strategy in the American southern theater. Though Phillips has largely been denied attention throughout history, Davis' work goes a long way toward restoring his rightful place.

Book excerpt: In 1781, Virginia was invaded by formidable British forces that sought to subdue the Old Dominion. Lieutenant General Charles, Lord Cornwallis, led thousands of enemy troops from Norfolk to Charlottesville, burning and pillaging. Many of Virginia's famed Patriots--including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry and Nathanael Greene'struggled to defend the commonwealth. Only by concentrating a small band of troops under energetic French general the Marquis de Lafayette were American forces able to resist British operations. With strained support from Governor Jefferson's administration, Lafayette fought a campaign against the veteran soldiers of Lord Cornwallis that eventually led to the famed showdown at Yorktown. Historian John R. Maass traces this often overlooked Revolutionary struggle for Virginia and details each step on the road to Yorktown.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular marriage counselor and seminar leader John Gray provides a unique, practical and proven way for men and women to communicate and relate better by acknowledging the differences between them. Once upon a time Martians and Venusians met, fell in love, and had happy relationships together because they respected and accepted their differences. Then they came to earth and amnesia set in: they forgot they were from different planets. Using this metaphor to illustrate the commonly occurring conflicts between men and women, Gray explains how these differences can come between the sexes and prohibit mutually fulfilling loving relationships. Based on years of successful counseling of couples, he gives advice on how to counteract these differences in communication styles, emotional needs and modes of behavior to promote a greater understanding between individual partners. Gray shows how men and women react differently in conversation and how their relationships are affected by male intimacy cycles ("get close", "back off"), and female self-esteem fluctuations ("I'm okay", "I'm not okay"). He encourages readers to accept the other gender's particular way of expressing love, and helps men and women learn how to fulfill each other's emotional needs. With practical suggestions on how to reduce conflict, crucial information on how to interpret a partner's behavior and methods for preventing emotional "trash from the past" from invading new relationships, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus is a valuable tool for couples who want to develop deeper and more satisfying relationships with their partners.

The Day the Whores Went Home will pull the reader along on a voyage that explores pain and possibilities, condemnation and redemption, wins and losses.

He believes in public service, in democracy, and in striving to meet the needs of all citizens, especially those in the worst circumstances. Andersen's strong faith and values resonate from the first page of this autobiography. His writing is honest, personable, straightforward, portraying both the personal rigor and thoughtfulness of his business and newspaper careers." -St. Paul Pioneer Press

Book excerpt: The Social Contract, originally published as On the Social Contract; or, Principles of Political Rights, is a book in which Rousseau theorized about the best way to establish a political community in the face of the problems of commercial society, which he had already identified in his Discourse on Inequality (1754). The Social Contract helped inspire political reforms or revolutions in Europe, especially in France. The Social Contract argued against the idea that monarchs were divinely empowered to legislate. Rousseau asserts that only the people, who are sovereign, have that all-powerful right. Emile, or On Education is a treatise on the nature of education and on the nature of man. Jean-Jacques Rousseau considered it to be the "best and most important" of all his writings. Due to a section of the book entitled "Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar", Emile was banned in Paris and Geneva and was publicly burned in 1762, the year of its first publication. During the French Revolution, Emile served as the inspiration for what became a new national system of education.

Book excerpt: MARK'S GROUP DISCOUNT: In this HANDY 6x9" edition, your teenager will be thrilled to discover how Jesus might have spent his youth in preparation to become the Messiah. This faux biography of Jesus reconstructs the historic settings in which Jesus lived among mankind as one of us. The "missing years" are an interpolation of the birth story and his mission. The many characters are presented with familiar motives and concerns. This set of four Gospel novels presents a theologically correct depiction of the Trinity at work as God prepares His son to deal with his own flesh in this material world. As you preview the carefully worded sexual passages, your eyes will open to the modern dilemma that young people face today. You will recognize the Holy Spirit's voice, as God molds and forges Jesus in the same way that Jesus can mold and forge you. Both the humanity of Jesus and his divinity are portrayed in this romantic story of the adventure that Jesus began - an adventure that continues to this day.
