The stratified layers, fossils, coal beds, frozen mammoths, certain historical events, prophecies fulfilled, the ice age, and climate changes--albeIt for a literal interpretation of the Bible.
Book Synopsis Whence and Whither by : Thomas Lynch
Download or read book Whence and Whither written by Thomas Lynch and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From one of our most gifted writers and thinkers about death and the meaning of living comes a collection of writings about what comes next. Thomas Lynch, funeral director, poet, and author of the National Book Award finalist The Undertaking: Life Studies from the Dismal Trade, has an uncanny knack for writing about death in ways that are never morbid, always thoughtful, often humorous, and quite moving. From his account of riding in the hearse at the funeral of poet laureate Seamus Heaney, to his recounting of the funeral for a young child in the 1800s, to his compelling essay about his own mortality, Lynch always finds ways to make sense of senseless things, as he ponders what will come next.

Book excerpt: It is believed that in addition to its utility as a textbook for direct instruction, this work will be found of great value as a “supplementary” text-book, where some other system is used in the regular course. For individual study outside the schoolroom, there is inestimable value in a book clear enough to be studied on own, and short enough to “get through with,” while yet as accurate as the most extensive works. The book is also designed to meet the constant demand, in the office, the study, the home, or for preparing the competitive examinations. The book is divided into two parts, 1. Parts of Speech (The Noun, The Pronoun, The Adjective, The Verb, The Preposition, The Conjunction, The Interjection) and 2. The Sentence

Book Synopsis The Beginning of Western Philosophy by : Martin Heidegger
Download or read book The Beginning of Western Philosophy written by Martin Heidegger and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a close reading of two presocratic philosophers, Heidegger demonstrates that all of Western philosophy is rooted in the question of Being. This volume comprises a lecture course given at the University of Freiburg in 1932, five years after the publication of Being and Time. During this period, Heidegger was at the height of his creative powers, which are on full display in this clear and imaginative text. Heidegger analyses two of the earliest philosophical source documents, fragments by Greek thinkers Anaximander and Parmenides. Heidegger develops their common theme of Being and non-being and shows that the question of Being is indeed the origin of Western philosophy. His engagement with these Greek texts is as much of a return to beginnings as it is a potential reawakening of philosophical wonder and inquiry in the present.

Book Synopsis Prolegomena to a Critical Grammar by : Josef Schächter
Download or read book Prolegomena to a Critical Grammar written by Josef Schächter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first English version of Prolegomena zu einer kritischen Grammatik, published by Julius Springer, Vienna, 1935, as Volume 10 of the Vienna Circle's series Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung. The prefatory remarks of both editor and author acknowledge the influence ofWittgenstein in a general way. However, in aim and approach, the work differs from Wittgenstein's Philosophische Grammatik (l969). This is indeed based on material going back to 1932, some of which Schachter must have known. On the other hand, the present Prolegomena not only explains the general, philosophical principles to be followed, but in the light of these proceeds to cover the entire range of conventional grammar, showing where that is uncritical. Whether Wittgenstein in his turn knew of Schachter's work has never been explored. Schachter's object is universal grammar. As is natural, the examples in the original are largely drawn from German grammar, with occasional minor excursions into other languages. For English readers, what matters are the general problems of grammar: there is no point in tying these to the linguistic peculiarities of German, let alone a local variety of it. One who can grasp German at that level might as well read the original. The translation is therefore twofold: the text as a whole has been rendered into English, and the entire apparatus of examples has been replaced, as far as this can be done, by illustrations from English grammar, chosen so as to bring out the same kinds of problem as in the original.

Book Synopsis A Comprehensive Manchu-English Dictionary by : Jerry Norman
Download or read book A Comprehensive Manchu-English Dictionary written by Jerry Norman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-10-26 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jerry Norman’s Comprehensive Manchu–English Dictionary, a substantial revision and enlargement of his Concise Manchu–English Lexicon of 1978, now long out of print, is poised to become the standard English-language resource on the Manchu language. As the dynastic language of the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), Manchu was used in official documents and was also the vehicle for an enormous translation literature, mostly from the Chinese. The newDictionary, based exclusively on Qing sources, retains all of the information from the earlier Lexicon, but also includes hundreds of additional entries cited from original Manchu texts, enhanced cross-references, and an entirely new introduction on Manchu pronunciation and script. All content from the earlier publication has also been verified. This final book from the preeminent Manchu linguist in the English-speaking world is a reference work that not only updates Norman’s earlier scholarship but also summarizes his decades of study of the Manchu language. The Dictionary, which represents a significant scholarly contribution to the field of Inner Asian studies and to all students and scholars of Manchu and other Tungusic and related languages around the world, will become a major tool for archival research on Chinese late imperial period history and government.
