Book excerpt: A dazzlingly diverse anthology of thirty-five short plays spanning the theatrical spectrum. A ten-minute play is a blaze of theatrical energy. In this follow-up to their groundbreaking collection Take Ten, editors Eric Lane and Nina Shengold have put together a veritable bonfire of talent. Take Ten II: More 10-Minute Plays provides a fast-track tour of the current theatrical landscape, from the slapstick ingenuity of David Ives’ Arabian Nights to the searing tension of Diana Son’s 9/11 drama The Moon, Please, to Susan Miller’s luminous fable The Grand Design. This remarkably diverse anthology includes thirty-five short plays by such major American playwrights as Christopher Durang, Warren Leight, Romulus Linney and Donald Margulies, alongside a host of exciting new voices. Actors, directors, producers and teachers will find Take Ten II an invaluable source of meaty roles for people of every age, ethnicity and gender; lovers of theatre will find it a richly satisfying read. These deceptively short plays throb with life in all its variety: harrowing, hilarious, and breathtakingly vital. Book excerpt: The author Louise Hannah is a black teenage girl growing up in the sixties. A lot of things were going on during the sixties: segregation, integration, even immigration. We were at war with Vietnam, a race-divided nation, and then there was the wrath of her daddys rules. Louise felt like a prisoner in her own home. She needed to find herself, who she was and what she wanted to be. This is why she felt she had to escape the cruel and unfair demands of her daddys rules. In Louises senior year in high school, she met Jay. He had been to Vietnam and was currently a student at Florida AM University. When Jay went home with Louise to get interrogated, even before he could take Louise on a date, his time in the army and in college was the only thing that got him through the doors. Jay returned home from college for the summer and for Christmas. Louise found out that Jay was not coming because he had to go to Detroit to help his uncles run their nightclub. Louise was devastated; she was in love with Jay. He seemed to be life. She had gotten Jays number from his sister and called him. They had a fight on the phone, but they made up. After his job went on strike and closed down, Jay was at the club all the time, day and night. Jay was still living in Detroit; he traveled back to Miami long enough to make another baby and he was gone again. They had three kids and a rotten marriage. Things got so bad they went their own separate ways. Jay brought his girlfriend whenever he visited Miami to see the kids. Louise met someone while going back to nursing school. Their relationship got very serious .Louise later had a baby daughter for him. Even then Louise and Jay were still fussing and fighting whenever Jay visited the kids. They had a bittersweet love for each other, and no one wanted to say those two words: Im sorry.

Book excerpt: This story begins where it ends, followed by a whimsical search for lucidity. The reader is taken for a particle infused gambol, a continuum circling spacetime. Isolation propels our hero, Thomas Sawyer. Exploring truth in blackholed fiction, our protagonist forages inward, where reflections of self-determined inevitability combine in a frenzy of mockery and contradiction. At lightspeed, redemption illuminates a champion’s folly, a fatuitous glow of expiated observance plucking strings of pity. Quarantined with the loathing of an allegorical cat, Luca, Thomas purrs a sardonic tune toward infinity, and beyond. Besieged by mirrored worlds and consumed with extinction, haunting figures swirl from Thomas’ backscattering, a fanciful fancy of infantile fantasy, nonsensical nonsense, neither fanciful, nor fancy, but fantastic. Every word punctuates an elliptical narrative woven concave toward cosmic salvation. Finally, in the end, childhood friends find reciprocity in a nearby cemetery, where Thomas peddles his last commodity, cashes his final check, and sells his essence for salvation. Simply, the story is the story.
