No video games, no online games, no Instagram, no Periscope. Remember when social media was really just a nosey neighbor? Remember when everybody used to play outside with their friends? Playing Tag, Hide and go seek, jumping Double Dutch, or sitting on the stoop playing, "That's My Car." Remember Saturday morning cartoons? Or when a phone book doubled as a booster chair, and putting baseball cards in the spokes of your bicycle tires was the coolest thing ever? When the Streetlights Came On, by comedian Kevin Jordan is a fun look back on a time when you knew the difference between your school clothes and your play clothes, respect was a given and kids played outside...all day, until the street lights came on!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Back then you played hardTill The Streetlights Came On. It was a time when chores were plentiful and toys were simple; when bad attitudes weren't treated with a prescription—you just beat the kid good. Video games and shopping malls didn't exist, and hands got dirty in backyards and vacant lots. Such was the life of Stevie, a boy addicted to play. Whether being burned at the stake as a cowboy or escaping a Nazi POW camp, Stevie's life is one adventure after another—often comical, but always filled with spiritual consequence. Or at least that's the way his guardian, Uncle Harry, sees it. Whether facing the 'green mile' to pick out his own switch, being consigned to dreaded 'miscellaneous chores,' or obediently struggling to follow the complexities of how questioning the intelligence (or lack there of) of cats relates to the reality of God, Stevie knows he can always rely on Uncle Harry to provide answers—whether he can understand them or not—and look after his immortal soul. Capturing the waywardness of youth, and all the hilarity inherent in young boys and their crackbrained schemes, author Stephen Langdon's stories will keep you reading till the streetlights come on.

Book excerpt: When it comes to teenage children, and competing with things like social media, smart phones and peer impressions, parents are typically lower on the popularity totem pole. As scores of outside influences can place enormous strains on parent and teen relationships, parents can very easily find themselves on an emotional roller coaster, overwhelmed, overextended, grasping for solutions, and in some cases, joining ranks with so many other parents, relatives, families, friends, communities and agencies who deal with the prevailing reality of towering juvenile delinquency concerns in America. Being one of those parents, author Marie Belle recounts her experiences in the story, My Daughter is Cold, as she takes readers on a compelling parenting journey filled with attestations of endurance, survival, determination, hope and encouragement for anyone else who is or may be in the future simply trying to raise a teen in todays society.

The first, “The Bed Thrasher,” has a young girl suffering from a very real sleep disorder with a startling twist. The town of Sandy Hill’s elderly residents find new life from a visiting doctor’s potion in “Elixir,” but are they willing to pay the price? A prelude to “Savior II,” first written in Tricks of the Trade, reveals the entire story behind Earth’s potential destruction in “The Hand of God.” Taxi drivers in a large metropolitan area are succumbing to a serial killer as an aging detective and his team race to find the killer in “Curbside Caller.” “Bell Ringers” has five childhood friends pulling pranks throughout their neighborhood until three of them ring the wrong doorbell, and the group reunite forty years later to fight an evil presence. These are stories to be read by one light over your shoulder and before the sun comes up. Unless, of course, you, too, thrash about your bed from the nightmares you keep buried!

Book excerpt: The record-breaking phenomenon from Elizabeth Kostova is a celebrated masterpiece that "refashioned the vampire myth into a compelling contemporary novel, a late-night page-turner" (San Francisco Chronicle). Breathtakingly suspenseful and beautifully written, The Historian is the story of a young woman plunged into a labyrinth where the secrets of her family’s past connect to an inconceivable evil: the dark fifteenth-century reign of Vlad the Impaler and a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive through the ages. The search for the truth becomes an adventure of monumental proportions, taking us from monasteries and dusty libraries to the capitals of Eastern Europe—in a feat of storytelling so rich, so hypnotic, so exciting that it has enthralled readers around the world. “Part thriller, part history, part romance...Kostova has a keen sense of storytelling and she has a marvelous tale to tell.” —Baltimore Sun

The book has four parts:A succinct summary of key matters of introduction;A collection of sermons on the Gospel's core chapters, with reflective reminiscence and remembrance of what Raymond Brown said in lecture about the Gospel thirty years ago;A series of background lectures that attempt, on the one hand, to honor the key insights of the current opinion communis (that Jewish apocalyptic explains John) and, on the other hand, to open the door to further insights from an older perspective needed for a full appreciation of John (that the Hellenistic Gnostic background explains John);A set of pedagogical appendices, employable in the classroom, to aid discussion.Together these components attempt to provide the necessary second book for an introduction to the Fourth Gospel, engaging the commentaries with the hermeneutical, homiletical, exegetical, and pastoral implications of a first-level study of John.

Reliving these experiences in order to write them down has been a joy for me. Book excerpt: Night falls for the three million Syrians waiting in refugee camps in Turkey. As they lie on rocky ground some of them dream of home, some of the day they'll be reunited with their families, and some, like Ayamin, are sick of dreaming. Seventeen, on her own, and hungry for more, Ayamin packs her tent and sets off on foot across the Mediterranean and Europe in search of a place to call home. But then she meets a hard-headed plot twist named Danny Frey. Danny's a juvenile delinquent from England, sent to Turkey to help out at the camps. He doesn't like rules, and he doesn't like the idea of Ayamin taking on the whole of Europe on her own. A kids' tent, two pairs of worn boots, a flipped boat, a storm of tear gas, a field of lavender, a sunrise train ride, an angry conductor, a guitar-playing hobo, a hemp loving Irishman, a chess-playing churchgoer, and the police forces of four countries make for one epic journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Reading this courageous book feels like the beginning of a social and personal awakening...I can’t stop thinking about it.”—Brené Brown, PhD, author of Atlas of the Heart For readers of Emergent Strategy and Dare to Lead, an activist's roadmap to long-term social justice impact through four simple shifts. We need a fundamental shift in our values--a pivot in how we think, act, work, and connect. Despite what we’ve been told, the most critical mainspring of social change isn’t coalition building or problem analysis. It’s healing: deep, whole, and systemic, inside and out. Here, Shawn Ginwright, PhD, breaks down the common myths of social movements--a set of deeply ingrained beliefs that actually hold us back from healing and achieving sustainable systemic change. He shows us why these frames don’t work, proposing instead four revolutionary pivots for better activism and collective leadership: Awareness: from lens to mirror Connection: from transactional to transformative relationships Vision: from problem-fixing to possibility-creating Presence: from hustle to flow Supplemented with reflections, prompts, cutting-edge research, and the author’s own insights and lived experience as an African American social scientist, professor, and movement builder, The Four Pivots helps us uncover our obstruction points. It shows us how to discover new lenses and boldly assert our need for connection, transformation, trust, wholeness, and healing. It gives us permission to create a better future--to acknowledge that a broken system has been predefining our dreams and limiting what we allow ourselves to imagine, but that it doesn’t have to be that way at all. Are you ready to pivot?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change. Two words that are quickly becoming the clarion call to action in the twenty-first century. It is a voter issue, an economy driver, and a defining dynamic for the foreseeable future. Yet, in Black communities, climate change is seen as less urgent when compared to other pressing issues, including police brutality, gun violence, job security, food insecurity, and the blatant racism faced daily around the country. However, with Black Americans disproportionately impacted by the effects of climate change--making up 13 percent of the US population but breathing 40 percent dirtier air and being twice as likely to be hospitalized or die from climate-related health problems than white counterparts--climate change is a central issue of racial justice and affects every aspect of life for Black communities. In Before the Streetlights Come On, climate activist Heather McTeer Toney insists that those most affected by climate change are best suited to lead the movement for climate justice. McTeer Toney brings her background in politics, community advocacy, and leadership in environmental justice to this revolutionary exploration of why and how Black Americans are uniquely qualified to lead national and global conversations around systems of racial disparity and solutions to the climate crisis. As our country delves deeper into solutions for systemic racism and past injustices, she argues, the environmental movement must shift direction and leadership toward those most affected and most affecting change: Black communities.

He grew-up in the late 50's with twin sisters, a year younger than himself, and had one good friend to accompany him on the journey from childhood to adolescence. But growing-up is hard, especially for a kid! A first kiss or life's most embarrassing moment-two entirely different events I assure you-become monumental moments when viewed through the eyes of a kid. This book is a collection of such stories, all of which are true, that define one such life. But in a way they define all of us. It's about the feelings attached to the experiences of growing-up and one kid's attempt to make sense of the world around him. When the Street Lights Come On is about going home to a place in the heart that's warm and familiar. It's a book for kids about to embark on the journey called "growing-up" and for everyone who's already been initiated. In the end you'll be reminded that sometimes just showing up for the game of life can be the bravest thing a kid can do.

Book excerpt: An expert explains how the conventional wisdom about decision making can get us into trouble—and why experience can’t be replaced by rules, procedures, or analytical methods In making decisions, when should we go with our gut and when should we try to analyze every option? When should we use our intuition and when should we rely on logic and statistics? Most of us would probably agree that for important decisions, we should follow certain guidelines—gather as much information as possible, compare the options, pin down the goals before getting started. But in practice we make some of our best decisions by adapting to circumstances rather than blindly following procedures. In Streetlights and Shadows, Gary Klein debunks the conventional wisdom about how to make decisions. He takes ten commonly accepted claims about decision making and shows that they are better suited for the laboratory than for life. The standard advice works well when everything is clear, but the tough decisions involve shadowy conditions of complexity and ambiguity. Gathering masses of information, for example, works if the information is accurate and complete—but that doesn't often happen in the real world. (Think about the careful risk calculations that led to the downfall of the Wall Street investment houses.) Klein offers more realistic ideas about how to make decisions in real-life settings. He provides many examples—ranging from airline pilots and weather forecasters to sports announcers and Captain Jack Aubrey in Patrick O’Brian’s Master and Commander novels—to make his point. All these decision makers saw things that others didn’t. They used their expertise to pick up cues and to discern patterns and trends. We can make better decisions, Klein tells us, if we are prepared for complexity and ambiguity and if we will stop expecting the data to tell us everything. “I know of no one who combines theory and observation—intellectual rigor and painstaking observation of the real world—so brilliantly and gracefully as Gary Klein.” —Malcolm Gladwell, author of Outliers and Blink
