Download or read book Oh My Little Squirrel written by Julie Bill and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you know me, you know about my love of the critters that come visit me almost every day. Of course, I am closest to my sweet friend, “Little squirrel” that visits me every night at 5:00pm for his peanuts. The minute he hears me shake the peanut bag he knows it is “din din” time and all but trips over his own little paws to get to the tree where I place the peanuts on a concrete block that sits at the bottom of his tree! He loves watching me as much as I enjoy watching him! I also have 2 feral cats; a little gray kitten and a big ole’ long haired black cat with a white chest that looks very handsome and formal in his “tuxedo” when he comes to eat each day. He always looks like he is bored with life when he looks at me with his large deep set orange eyes. Little gray kitten just loves picking on him too! These two are so funny! They always keep me amused. Oh! I have the cutest bunny ever that hops through my side yard every day (especially when we plant our garden!). My bunny is so adorable! He looks just like a precious brown and white Easter Bunny! And I can’t forget my redheaded woodpecker. He is HUGE! He is either up in a tree pecking on the bark, or working on the tree stump in our side yard; helping us take it to the ground. He is a handy fellow to have around! With this being said, the sweet little characters in my book are written after real ones that visit me each day in my yard. They make my front porch my happy place! I hope you enjoy reading “OH My Little Squirrel” and following my Little squirrel’s adventures as much as I enjoyed writing about them!

From the exotic Miz Thelma Rae Goodpepper, who bathes in her backyard bathtub and uses garden slugs as her secret weapons; to Tootie's all-knowing housekeeper, Oletta Jones; to Violene Hobbs, who entertains a local police officer in her canary-yellow peignoir, the women of Gaston Street keep CeeCee entertained and enthralled for an entire summer. A timeless coming of age novel set in the 1960s, Saving CeeCee Honeycutt explores the indomitable strengths of female friendship, and charts the journey of an unforgettable girl who loses one mother, but finds many others in the storybook city of Savannah. As Kristin Hannah, author of Fly Away, says, Beth Hoffman's sparkling debut is “packed full of Southern charm, strong women, wacky humor, and good old-fashioned heart."

Download or read book My Reading Life written by Pat Conroy and published by Nan A. Talese. This book was released on 2010-11-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author Pat Conroy acknowledges the books that have shaped him and celebrates the profound effect reading has had on his life. Pat Conroy, the beloved American storyteller, is a voracious reader. Starting as a childhood passion that bloomed into a life-long companion, reading has been Conroy’s portal to the world, both to the farthest corners of the globe and to the deepest chambers of the human soul. His interests range widely, from Milton to Tolkien, Philip Roth to Thucydides, encompassing poetry, history, philosophy, and any mesmerizing tale of his native South. He has for years kept notebooks in which he records words and expressions, over time creating a vast reservoir of playful turns of phrase, dazzling flashes of description, and snippets of delightful sound, all just for his love of language. But for Conroy reading is not simply a pleasure to be enjoyed in off-hours or a source of inspiration for his own writing. It would hardly be an exaggeration to claim that reading has saved his life, and if not his life then surely his sanity. In My Reading Life, Conroy revisits a life of reading through an array of wonderful and often surprising anecdotes: sharing the pleasures of the local library’s vast cache with his mother when he was a boy, recounting his decades-long relationship with the English teacher who pointed him onto the path of letters, and describing a profoundly influential period he spent in Paris, as well as reflecting on other pivotal people, places, and experiences. His story is a moving and personal one, girded by wisdom and an undeniable honesty. Anyone who not only enjoys the pleasures of reading but also believes in the power of books to shape a life will find here the greatest defense of that credo. BONUS: This ebook edition includes an excerpt from Pat Conroy's The Death of Santini.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “TOMORROW” My Sister Said, Tomorrow Never Came. (Metis language translated into English) “That’s the train you’ll ride on,” Papa said. Mama muffled sounds as she pulled me close to her, then my two sisters. “My little girls, I’m going to miss you so much!” I was very confused. I wanted to cry. I didn’t like seeing my Mama cry. Why aren’t Mama and Papa coming with us I thought as we were guided onto the train? I tried looking out the window wanting to see Mama and Papa once more and was told to sit. As the train blew its loud whistle, we slowly began to move. Once more I jumped up and pressed my face to the window. “Mama, Papa,” I cried until their faces faded in the distance. I was five years old. I didn’t understand where I was going. Several long hours came to pass as an overwhelming sadness continued to engulf me. I could not control my tears. I wanted to go home! I wanted my Mama! I wanted my Papa! The more my sisters, Helene and Lucy, tried to console me, the harder I cried. “Shhh,” Helene whispered. As I closed my heavy eyes and laid my head on her lap, I heard her softly say, “Tomorrow...tomorrow we’ll go home.” My sisters were big girls. They were much older than I. They would know when I would get to see my Mama and Papa and my Brother Tommy again. After all, Helene was eight years old and Lucy was seven. They would take care of me. Papa told them to watch over me. My world as I knew it no longer existed. We were shipped off to a government boarding school. It was 1927. “Indians” must be civilized! The Indians must be divorced from his primitive ways! We must recreate him! Make a new personality! Teach them the white man’s ways! Helene? Lucy? Where are you? As time passed I began to forget my Mama and Papa and all that was before. Did the government succeeded in recreating me. I was now eight years old. We were told we would get to go home for the summer. I wanted to stay at school. I would miss my friends. Again, another unknown world was thrown at me. A sadness engulfed me again. A sadness I knew I felt before. What did Mama and Papa look like? Where did we live? I tried to picture home...family...but the memories of when I left home seem to be forgotten. Three long years passed since my sister Helene said these words, “Tomorrow my sister”.

Book Synopsis The Unwritten Book by : Samantha Hunt
Download or read book The Unwritten Book written by Samantha Hunt and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2022-04-05 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “One of our most interesting and bold writers . . . [offers] a characteristically wild effort that defies genre distinctions, flits from the profound to the mundane with fierce intelligence and searching restlessness, and at its best, delves deep into the recesses of the human heart with courageous abandon . . . An intoxicating blend of humor and pathos.” —Priscilla Gilman, The Boston Globe “Eerie, profound, and daring, this is a book only the inimitable Hunt could write.” —Adrienne Westenfeld, Esquire From Samantha Hunt, the award-winning author of The Dark Dark, comes The Unwritten Book, her first work of nonfiction, a genre-bending creation that explores the importance of books, the idea of haunting, and messages from beyond I carry each book I’ve ever read with me, just as I carry my dead—those things that aren’t really there, those things that shape everything I am. A genre-bending work of nonfiction, Samantha Hunt’s The Unwritten Book explores ghosts, ghost stories, and haunting, in the broadest sense of each. What is it to be haunted, to be a ghost, to die, to live, to read? Books are ghosts; reading is communion with the dead. Alcohol is a way of communing, too, as well as a way of dying. Each chapter gathers subjects that haunt: dead people, the forest, the towering library of all those books we’ll never have time to read or write. Hunt, like a mad crossword puzzler, looks for patterns and clues. Through literary criticism, history, family history, and memoir, inspired by W. G. Sebald, James Joyce, Ali Smith, Toni Morrison, William Faulkner, and many others, Hunt explores motherhood, hoarding, legacies of addiction, grief, how we insulate ourselves from the past, how we misinterpret the world. Nestled within her inquiry is a very special ghost book, an incomplete manuscript about people who can fly without wings, written by her father and found in his desk just days after he died. What secret messages might his work reveal? What wisdom might she distill from its unfinished pages? Hunt conveys a vivid and grateful life, one that comes from living closer to the dead and shedding fear for wonder. The Unwritten Book revels in the randomness, connectivity, and magic of everyday existence. And at its heart is the immense weight of love.
