We have been misled by historical assumptions and popular prophecies to think of heaven as irrelevant and intimidating, but by reexamining the biblical picture of heaven as terrestrial and urban, and as a relevant resolution to the current cosmic story, we form a framework for living with godly purpose in our vocation, citizenship, recreation, and families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the psalms are a microcosm of the Old Testament, so the Expositions of the Psalms can be seen as a microcosm of Augustinian thought. In the Book of Psalms are to be found the history of the people of Israel, the theology and spirituality of the Old Covenant, and a treasury of human experience expressed in prayer and poetry. So too does the work of expounding the psalms recapitulate and focus the experiences of Augustine's personal life, his theological reflections and his pastoral concerns as Bishop of Hippo."--Publisher's website.

Book excerpt: Wisdom is an integratal part of all philosophical and religious traditions in the world. Focusing on the concept of wisdom, this book examines the difficulties and problems facing comparative studies of the early Confucian and Israelite traditions by exploring the cosmological and ethical implications of wisdom in the older layers of Christian and Confucian texts. Presenting a detailed discussion of how wisdom was understood in philosophical, religious and social contexts by the writers of the so-called early Confucian and Israelite wisdom texts, this book offers an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the significance of wisdom in the East and West, and to our knowledge of different and yet related ways of life as understood in their literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any commentary on a portion of the Old Testament by a writer unacquainted with Hebrew, exact criticism, and freedom from mistake, must not be expected. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God's people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect to its actual meaning. However, the main scope and bearing of the text is rarely affected by such points as vary in different translations, and the analogy of the faith is sufficient to prevent a Catholic mind from adopting any error in consequence of a text seeming to bear a heterodox meaning. Perhaps the errors of translation in the existing versions may have led the Fathers to adopt rules of interpretation ranging too far from the simple and literal; but having such translations, they could hardly use them otherwise. Meanwhile St. Augustin will be found to excel in the intense apprehension of those great truths which pervade the whole of Sacred Writ, and in the vivid and powerful exposition of what bears upon them. It is hardly possible to read his practical and forcible applications of Holy Scripture, without feeling those truths by the faith of which we ought to live brought home to the heart in a wonderful manner. His was a mind that strove earnestly to solve the great problems of human life, and after exhausting the resources, and discovering the emptiness, of erroneous systems, found truth and rest at last in Catholic Christianity, in the religion of the Bible as expounded by St. Ambrose. This is volume one out of two, covering the Psalms I through LXXIII.

Book excerpt: Compilation of little-known and never-before-published apocryphal Christian texts in English translation This anthology of ancient nonbiblical Christian literature presents informed introductions to and readable translations of a wide range of little-known apocryphal texts, most of which have never before been translated into any modern language. An introduction to the volume as a whole addresses the most significant features of the writings included and contextualizes them within the contemporary study of the Christian Apocrypha. The body of the book comprises thirty texts that have been carefully introduced, copiously annotated, and translated into English by eminent scholars. With dates of composition ranging from the second century CE to early in the second millennium, these fascinating texts provide a more complete picture of Christian thought and expression than canonical texts alone can offer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American soldier, Sergeant Abbey “McJack” finds herself recently widowed in the Iraqi war. Her life tour and her original career in aviation cut short. She had lost everything she held dear to her from the love of her life, to her ideals, her faith, and dealing with the world in general. Having no family of her own, her deceased husband’s family already distant and mute, she is advised by a mutual friend and co-worker to take stock of her life and to take a trip abroad in order to find out what she wants to do with her new life. In her travels, she ends up in Ullapool finding the idyllic life much to her liking that she finds starting over much easier than she thought until she meets Gregory McGregor. For Greg, this new and attractive tourist piques his interest, though he is not the only one in the small town to notice her. He finds her weary from her tour of duty in the American-Iraqi war. He first assumes she is on military leave, for she barely talks about the past and keeps to herself on most occasions. In due time, he realizes they may have met before and is reminded of his promise for revenge. For she was the one to cost him nearly his life and for taking his brother’s life, practically rendering his family apart. However, there was one small problem; he had become smitten with her. Did the faes of fate have a sick sense of humor or was God above to blame? Only time would tell, completing its full intricate weave on its circular path.

Book excerpt: The Existence and Attributes of God in 2 volumes is a series of discourses and lectures delivered by the great Stephen Charnock to the members of his congregation at Crosby Hall. Charnock discusses, in a logical flow of thoughts, the existence of God, and the untenability of maintaining an atheistic worldview. Unfortunately, however, the Discourses were cut short by Charnock's death in 1680.
