Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of a lifetime of hound-dogging and hunting of the big cats in an action packed year of adventure on the famous Vermejo Park Ranch in northern New Mexico. The pages of When the Dogs Bark "Treed" vividly reflect the author’s love for wildlife and for wild places. It is a portrayal of a conservationist and administrator of wildlife resources who came up the hard way. It, incidentally, presents a vast store of information about game and predators and their environment which the author has gleaned from long years of firsthand contacts. Only the pioneer who helped blaze the dangerous, difficult trails of exploration and conquest could fully appreciate the part played by horses and dogs in his adventures. Elliott Barker, appreciated his dogs and horses and gives them a full share of credit for his success in following and destroying the larger predaceous animals. One has only to follow the story as it swiftly unfolds to appreciate the fact that the author is a product of the saddle and of the mountains and forests of his beloved Sunshine State. No other was better qualified to pen the pages of this book, rich in romance and factual material, than Elliott Barker, the first State Game Warden of New Mexico, and no stage more fitting for the enactment of the drama than the Vermejo Park property, a part of the famous old Maxwell Land Grant, still in almost primitive state, in northern New Mexico.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from When the Dogs Bark "Treed" A Year on the Trail of the Longtails It seems pertinent to tell here just how it came about that I was on this job. Having been reared in a game and predator country in the mountains of New Mexico, I had from boyhood specialized in hunting, particularly with dogs. In the early days I had hunted and trapped for the bounty and fur values of bears, mountain lions, bobcats, and coyotes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A single city woman meets Mr. Right-he has amber eyes and a wily heart. There's only one catch . . . he has four legs and a tail. Relatively indifferent to the natural world, allergic to dogs, and happily independent, writer Louise Bernikow never had a pet and knew nothing about caring for one. But one day while running along Manhattan's Hudson River, she came across an abandoned boxer. He had a gimpy leg and a dim past, but Bernikow instantly, bewilderingly, did the one thing her mother always warned her not to do-she brought the strange male home. Here is the comical and offbeat story of their first year together. Libro, as she comes to call him (for "book," in Spanish), introduces her to the curious world of dog runs and dog people, and to a local dive where the bartender pulls pints from the tap and dog biscuits from the drawer. Bernikow, in turn, introduces Libro to the eccentric neighbors and to life as a media hound. When they meet a handsome man and his equally handsome dachshund, life takes an unexpected turn for both of them. Wonderfully written and captivating to the last, this is a remarkable tale of companionship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Dr. Ian Dunbar introduced his SIRIUS® Puppy Training in 1982, dog training mostly comprised punishing adult dogs for bad habits and lack of compliance. Dunbar focused on verbally cuing and creatively luring to achieve desirable behavior and using “life rewards” — sniffing, walking, play with dogs, and interactive games — to reinforce speedy compliance and good habits from the outset. His “dog’s point of view” approach revolutionized the field, and today there are few trainers who have not been strongly influenced by it. While positive reinforcement is now widely adopted, this new book details how other reward-training techniques have strayed from Dunbar’s original, quick and easy, highly effective lure-reward approach for teaching dogs ESL, in which we can verbally cue specific responses, offer heartfelt praise for success, and give guidance when dogs err. With Dunbar’s method, we can teach dogs when and where to eliminate, what to chew, when and for how long to bark, and when and how to appropriately let off steam. Barking Up the Right Tree offers proof that aversive punishment seldom works to eliminate undesirable behavior or to get the dog back on track. Dunbar presents numerous nonaversive yet highly effective solutions for misbehavior and noncompliance — simply by using the words you teach, and without even raising your voice. The culmination of fifty-plus years at the vanguard of dog behavioral science, Barking Up the Right Tree is an indispensable guide for anyone who wants harmonious, two-way communication with a calm, confident, well-behaved, happy canine companion.

Everyone has their favorite among hounds and hunting books but Slash Ranch Hounds is certainly among the best in any section. It is very strong on the intricate workings of hounds in pursuit of scent. While not a "how-to" book, any dog man can benefit from Evan's training tips and hunting techniques, most told within the context of stories. And Dub Evans was simply a good writer, who could render an exciting chase that we can feel today without the need for tall tales and exaggerations. From long experience following the hounds horseback in wild country, he knew that an honest recall of actual events was the best story of all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Note: Although this book is listed as biography/autobiography, it is actually FOLKLORE from the Midland Region of the United States and can be considered as Americana and nostalgia. Elizabeth Pearl Lowe Boyd (1904 - 1965) grew up on farms in Warren County, Kentucky, near Bowling Green. Unlike many girls of that era, she went on from the rural, one-room school to graduate from what is now Western Kentucky University (a degree in English and Latin). After a year of teaching in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, she moved to Cross City, Florida, where she taught another year and married Robert U. Boyd, a railroad agent. By 1935 they had settled in Dunedin, Florida, where they raised their eight children. From 1936 until her death, she wrote a popular column in the local weekly paper, The Dunedin Times, titled From My Kitchen Window. The topics she wrote about were many and varied, and her focus was on the ordinary and commonplace. Over two hundred of these articles were about her recollections of growing up in rural Kentucky, and they were selected for this book. Although Florida had become her home, her heart remained in Kentucky. It was there, for that sweet land and for the hills and seasons, that she felt deeply attached. She never lost her yearnings for the hills, for the agrarian life of Kentucky. And it was of rural people, life, times, and history that she wrote most eloquently. Pearl Lowe Boyd (the name she went by) was energetic, jolly, determined and focused, civic minded, and above all, a mother. She spread her children out over twenty-two years, and she was fascinated by her little ones, their beauty, their trust, their development and their emergence into big people. Writing was the forum through which she best expressed herself - the same as music is for a musician. In her earliest writings and diaries she stated her desires to be a writer. Her opinions were carefully thoughtful, erudite, and tactfully voiced. The only time I remember that she got her dander up and went on an all-out crusade was when she got wind that the town leaders were planning to have an enormous, beautiful oak tree behind the Chamber of Commerce cut down. They lost, she won, and the tree is standing today. She loved to read and kept lists of books she devoured - sometimes over a hundred in a years span. Yet her own mother was opposed to education beyond the eighth grade for a farm girl and was very much disapproving of her reading novels - even the writings by Dickens. It was her father who encouraged her education and her love of books and writing. She was the kind of person who looked for the good in things, in people, in nature, and in life. Although she had periods of worry and depression, she never let them slow her down. The reasoning behind her positive outlook, which she described to me during one of my down times, was pragmatic and positive: why choose to dwell on the hurtful and the bad when one can live much more effectively by dwelling on the beautiful, the exciting, and the good of life? She grew up during Womens Suffrage. As an early feminist, she insisted on fairness in all things for women as for men, yet in her own life she was comfortable with first being a had-working housewife and mother and being a civic leader and writer second. Among her homespun articles she also wrote blistering articles against the treatment of Jews and others during World War II and against bigotry during the early days of desegregation. The n word was certainly not permitted in her home. I remember her as a wise person. On one occasion when two of her children were arguing over splitting up a remaining chunk of cake, she utilized the King Solomon ploy by allowing one to make the slice and the other to take the first piece. Of course, the two pieces were precisely identical. Music was a part of our lives with
