Book Synopsis Gorilla Pathology and Health by : John E Cooper
Download or read book Gorilla Pathology and Health written by John E Cooper and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gorilla Pathology and Health: With a Catalogue of Preserved Materials consists of two cross-referenced parts. The first, the book itself, is a review of pathological changes and tissue responses in gorillas (Gorilla gorilla and G. beringei), with an emphasis on free-living animals, but also with reference to those in captivity. The comparative aspects are discussed, stressing the relevance of research to both gorillas and humans. What makes the publication truly unique, however, is the second part, a comprehensive descriptive catalogue of the location and nature of gorilla material in museums and scientific institutions throughout the world. This is of great consequence because free-living gorillas are strictly conserved with restricted access, so the location of a wealth of preserved tissues and other material that has been collected over the decades is a great benefit for research and study. This book can, and should, be used to gain cardinal knowledge regarding the biology and pathology of this genus. The combination of book and catalogue in this extensive compilation makes it an invaluable tool for all those concerned with the health, welfare, and conservation of gorillas, one of our nearest living relatives. Brings together studies, data, and clinical practice from difficult-to-access or obscure journals and NGO reports, in different languages, for all interested parties and practitioners Provides perspectives on existing research in gorilla pathology, both for those studying conservation practices and those seeking an understanding of comparable diseases in humans Includes illustrative figures on gross and microscopic pathological changes, museum specimens, photos of field necropsy and techniques, and examples of laboratory tests Features an extensive list of references and further reading, in different languages Incorporates a comprehensive, descriptive catalogue of gorilla material from around the world

Book Synopsis Building Bones: Bone Formation and Development in Anthropology by : Christopher J. Percival
Download or read book Building Bones: Bone Formation and Development in Anthropology written by Christopher J. Percival and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bone is the tissue most frequently recovered archaeologically and is the material most commonly studied by biological anthropologists, who are interested in how skeletons change shape during growth and across evolutionary time. This volume brings together a range of contemporary studies of bone growth and development to highlight how cross-disciplinary research and new methods can enhance our anthropological understanding of skeletal variation. The novel use of imaging techniques from developmental biology, advanced sequencing methods from genetics, and perspectives from evolutionary developmental biology improve our ability to understand the bases of modern human and primate variation. Animal models can also be used to provide a broad biological perspective to the systematic study of humans. This volume is a testament to the drive of anthropologists to understand biological and evolutionary processes that underlie changes in bone morphology and illustrates the continued value of incorporating multiple perspectives within anthropological inquiry.

Book Synopsis Story of the Talking Bones by : James Penning
Download or read book Story of the Talking Bones written by James Penning and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2004 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story about a modern day hunter that is hunting in a strange area, even though he hunted the Black Hills for over thirty years. During this hunt, he comes across burnt foundations and 5 graves. These stones have his relation names on them with the date of death all on the same day. He finds a skeleton nearby that he uncovers and says, "If only these bones could talk!" It goes back to 1866 through what happens, causing these deaths. It goes to 1877 and tells how the Davey is adopted. It follows the lives through the Deadwood gold discovery days. He and Russ have a ranch partnership and the story shows problems and events involved in ranching, and Indian problems. Many things happen, building friendships, also facing perils in those days. It explains the deaths of the family and finally uncovers the murderous deed and those responsible. It's based on historical facts, no one is written about without their permission. If it does cover anything or anyone, it is unintentional. I have written this book based on Christian background, without any swearing or sex, so it is readable for all ages.
