She awakens ten days later in a village inn under the care of Lucie Orlov and her uncle. Tall, mesmerizingly handsome Count Gregory Orlov was Catherine the Great’s uncrowned emperor and one of the most powerful men in the realm—until the possessive, wildly jealous empress banished her lover from the court. Marietta too has been betrayed. Jeremy Bond has left the city—with another woman and all of Marietta’s money. Heartbroken, with nowhere else to turn, she takes the position of companion to Lucie and travels with the Orlovs back to Russia. At their lavish country estate in St. Petersburg, she becomes trapped in a different kind of prison. Caught up in the dangerous intrigues of the imperial court, she fights for her freedom and her life—and a love she’ll move heaven and earth to claim. Book excerpt: This classic New York Times–bestselling historical romance tells the enthralling, passionate story of a young English woman who is wrongly convicted of a crime and auctioned off to the highest bidder in the American colonies Born out of wedlock to a London barmaid, Marietta Danver yearns to live life to its fullest despite her humble origins. But her dreams of love and happiness almost die in Newgate Prison, where she is convicted of a crime she didn’t commit and deported to North America to be sold into indentured servitude. In the wild Carolinas, Marietta uses her beauty to survive. But in doing so she arouses unruly passions in the hearts of three men: Derek Hawke, the enigmatic planter who buys Marietta for an outrageous sum; brash, charming Jeff Rawlins, who sweeps her away to Louisiana; and a gentleman whose fervor may conceal a violent madness. From New Orleans’ red-light district to a fashionable estate in Natchez, from the struggles of a life of bondage to the perils of helping to transport slaves to freedom, Marietta vows to prevail and find a true and lasting love. The Marietta Danver Trilogy also includes Love Me, Marietta and When Love Commands.

Communication expert Dr. Emerson Eggerich says that the problem is couples are sending each other messages in 'code,' but they won't crack that code until they see that she listens to hear the language of love and he listens to hear the language of respect. Dr. Eggerichs' best-selling book, Love and Respect, launched a revolution in how couples relate to each other. In The Language of Love and Respect, you will discover: The basic communication differences between men and women A biblical perspective with easy-to-use tips and advice A quick review and summary for each chapter This book offers a practical, step-by-step approach for how husbands and wives can learn to speak each other’s distinctly different language -- respect for him, love for her. The result is mutual understanding and a successful, happy marriage. Previously released as Cracking the Communication Code.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of Christian ethics is the biblical commandment to love God and to love one's neighbor as oneself. But what is the meaning of love? Scholars have wrestled with this question since the recording of the Christian gospels, and in recent decades teachers and students of Christian ethics have engaged in vigorous debates about appropriate interpretations and implications of this critical norm. In Love and Christian Ethics, nearly two dozen leading experts analyze and assess the meaning of love from a wide range of perspectives. Chapters are organized into three areas: influential sources and exponents of Western Christian thought about the ethical significance of love, perennial theoretical questions attending that consideration, and the implications of Christian love for important social realities. Contributors bring a richness of thought and experience to deliver unprecedentedly broad and rigorous analysis of this central tenet of Christian ethics and faith. William Werpehowski provides an afterword on future trajectories for this research. Love and Christian Ethics is sure to become a benchmark resource in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Paul and Silas were in prison in Philippi, they burst into singing. Paul looked at life with a joyful song. He found delight when believers lived in harmony. The theme of this Bible study is Pauls Life-Song. Hear his song in the letter he wrote to Philippi, even while in another prison. Some strains explode with joy, while other stanzas carry a minor melody to encourage or warn the people he loved. Study his messages and learn how to apply Pauls attitudes regardless of his circumstances. This Bible study is rich with insights into the Hebrew and Greek and covers themes Paul brings from the Old Testament or other New Testament teachings. Dive deeper into those themes by taking important excursions into the background of the topics. This in-depth verse-by-verse investigation is valuable for individuals or groups. Enjoy the commentary while completing the workbook and applying the messages to everyday situations. Determine your timeframe for the study as you discover what the Lord Jesus wants to do in your life through Paul. Ive had the privilege of knowing Sharon Gresham as a teacher/speaker for many years and now as a writer. Her commitment to in-depth study and application of the Bible is refreshing. The Philippians study equips the pastor/teacher with a resource much needed in the church today. I am excited to teach this study both in our church and as we minister internationally. Darrel Auvenshine, pastor of Southside City Church, Fort Worth, Texas With a gift for accurately communicating Gods Word in a relevant and personal way, Sharon Greshams in-depth study of Philippians will delight and thrill any serious student of the Scriptures. I highly recommend it! Scott Whitson, director of missions, Southwest Metroplex Baptist Association and former missionary to Tanzania

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Take this Word to Heart, Perry Yoder and his former students make important contributions to our understanding of the two great commandments in the Gospels--Jesus' command to love God and to love our neighbor. Yoder's own introductory chapter and the excellent studies of Deuteronomy and the Synoptics that follow shed fresh light on the Shema (Deuteronomy 6:4-5) and the New Testament's use of it. Preachers, scholars, and other students of scripture will be grateful to the Institute of Mennonite Studies for publishing this unique resource, which should be widely read. Ben C. Ollenburger, Professor of Biblical Theology Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary, Elkhart, Indiana The master teacher entangles the students in a web of compulsion and enticement. New material must be mastered, assignments completed, tests taken, and papers written. But there is also the promise of buried treasure. ""Here is a word that has spoken to me,"" says the teacher. ""It is my hope that it will also speak to you. And if you take this word to heart, it will speak to me anew through your discoveries."" These essays by Perry Yoder and four students in his biblical studies seminar give voice to a deeply shared journey of discovery. There is a popular misconception of the rarified atmosphere of the graduate seminar as the sterile launching ground of esoteric papers, as countless as they are pointless. The vigor and passion of these essays should help correct this false image. Paul Keim, Professor of Bible and Religion Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana

His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed at the Comédie-Française more often than those of any other playwright today. He invented a new style that employed a double vision of normal and abnormal seen in relation to each other—the comedy of the true opposed to the specious, the intelligent set against the pedantic. Though the sacred and secular authorities often combined against him, Molière’s genius finally emerged to win him the status of a world author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What, if anything, does Jesus of Nazareth have to do with philosophy? This question motivates this collection of essays from leading theologians, philosophers, and biblical scholars. Part I portrays Jesus in his first-century intellectual and historical context, attending to intellectual influences and contributions and contemporaneous similar patterns of thought. Part II examines how Jesus influenced two of the most prominent medieval philosophers. It considers the seeming conceptual shift from Hebraic categories of thought to distinctively Greco-Roman ones in later Christian philosophers. Part III considers the significance of Jesus for some prominent contemporary philosophical topics, including epistemology and the meaning of life. The focus is not so much on how 'Christianity' figures in such topics as on how Jesus makes distinctive contributions to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Armitage considers previous theological perception of 1 John as a text advocating that God abhors violence, contrasted with biblical scholarship analysis that focuses upon the text's birth from hostile theological conflict between 'insiders' and 'outsiders', with immensely hostile rhetoric directed towards 'antichrists' and those who have left the community. Armitage argues that a peace-oriented reading of 1 John is still viable, but questions if the commandment that the community loves each other is intended to include their opponents, and whether the text can be of hermeneutic use to advocate non-violence and love of one's neighbour. This book examines five key words from 1 John, hilasmos, sfazo, anthropoktonos, agape and adelphos, looking at their background and use in the Old Testament in both Hebrew and the LXX, arguing that these central themes presuppose a God whose engagement with the world is not assuaging divine anger, nor ferocious defence of truth at the expense of love, but rather peace and avoidance of hatred that inevitably leads to violence and death. Armitage concludes that a peacemaking hermeneutic is not only viable, but integral to reading the epistle.

Book excerpt: Oxford Studies in Early Modern Philosophy is an annual series, presenting a selection of the best current work in the history of early modern philosophy. It focuses on the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries—the extraordinary period of intellectual flourishing that begins, very roughly, with Descartes and his contemporaries and ends with Kant. It also publishes papers on thinkers or movements outside of that framework, provided they are important in illuminating early modern thought. The articles in OSEMP will be of importance to specialists within the discipline, but the editors also intend that they should appeal to a larger audience of philosophers, intellectual historians, and others who are interested in the development of modern thought.
