Book excerpt: On the night Maddie Taylor and Aiden Hughes meet, they end up on a chaotic journey of passion and disbelief. They come from two different parts of the world and they are in two very different walks of life. They each seem to have what the other needs but neither of them believe that it could be so simple as to walk into an English pub one fateful night. But, as their tale of romance and uncertainty unfolds, another relationship makes its presence known between Maddie’s best friend, Rachel Lewis and her Brother in-law, Ian Taylor. Their relationship has always been laced with longing and hunger and no matter how hard Rachel tries to resist, they always end up in bed together. Soon, the two couples are intertwined in intense and hilarious conversations and situations. There are naked encounters and alcohol involved admissions. Jealousy and stubbornness are always abound. But as it turns out, none of these four people can survive without the other three. And the only reason they make it though, is because their paths crossed at just the right time.

Book excerpt: It has long been recognized that realizing the potential for energy conservation and diversification by using heat pumps offers considerable benefits to the environment. Important work on more efficient and ozone-friendly working fluids will further enhance the case for greater support of heat pump research. This book contains the Proceedings of the Third International Energy Agency Conference held in Tokyo in March 1990. The main theme of the Conference, 'Heat Pumps - Solving Energy and Environmental Challenges', is explained in great depth, covering not only technical characteristics but economic factors and the role of government and other bodies in promoting research, and the uses of all types of heat pumps are also fully considered. As well as publishing the papers presented at the meeting, the book also contains the extensive complementary poster sessions from the Conference.

Book excerpt: This book explores the intricate world of plant signaling by unraveling the synergistic roles of salicylic acid and nitric oxide in plant adaptation. This captivating exploration illuminates the pivotal roles of salicylic acid (SA) and nitric oxide (NO) as master regulators of plant responses to changing environmental dynamics. SA, a phenolic maestro, wields its mastery in steering metabolic pathways, stimulating plants’ tolerance against abiotic stresses. Meanwhile, the enigmatic nitrogen monoxide (NO) emerges as a redox regulator, modulating growth and physiology amid high temperature stress. NO's role as a second messenger resonates through physiological processes, igniting antioxidant defenses, modulating osmolyte levels, and harmonizing stress-responsive genes. This volume seeks to highlight the covert alliance between SA and NO, more specifically their potential collaboration in alleviating high temperature-induced oxidative stress. The book offers basic yet enchanting voyage into the nexus of plant adaptation.

This book was released on 2024-07-08 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global climate change is a major threat to marine biodiversity worldwide. Average changes in ocean temperature, pH, and oxygenation are re-shaping marine communities, with significant impacts on the critical services that marine ecosystems provide to mankind. As global climate change continues, the frequency, duration, and intensity of extreme weather events are also predicted to increase, with fast and far-reaching consequences on marine species, including mass mortality and disruption of ecological processes. As a result, millions of ocean-dependent livelihoods and jobs are also at risk, with consequent economic impacts. Given the current climate and biodiversity crisis, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has emphasized the relevance of (1) increasing knowledge and protection of biodiversity and (2) assessing species climate-driven extinction risks. To achieve these goals, we need to understand organism-environment-ecology-evolution interactions at various levels of the biological hierarchy, from molecules to ecosystems. However, we are still lacking a comprehensive understanding of the molecular mechanisms shaping phenotypic landscapes in the natural environment, and under different global change scenarios. To address such challenges, a new strategic program was also launched by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), “Molecules to Ecosystems”, to study life in context, and provide new research avenues in molecular life sciences. In this context, the emerging disciplines of Marine Omics and Marine Systems Biology will be key to supporting innovative solutions in marine ecosystem conservation and blue bioeconomy (for example uncover molecular traits underlying sensitivity/tolerance to environmental change, supporting assisted evolution approaches; molecular targets that can be used for diagnostics, monitoring and development of biotechnological applications).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Hochberg is one of the most influential analytical philosophers and one of the most influential critics of analytical philosophy. He disputed with almost all leading analytical philosophers, from Quine, Goodman and Wilfrid Sellars to David Lewis and David Armstrong. His point of view is ontological and he harks back to the origins of analytical philosophy where he finds unknown precursors of current views. And he finds parallels to contemporary non-analytic philosophies. In his own ontology he tries to dispense with simple particulars.

Book excerpt: The aim of the two-set series is to present a very detailed and up-to-date reference for researchers and practicing engineers in the fields of mechanical, refrigeration, chemical, nuclear and electronics engineering on the important topic of two-phase heat transfer and two-phase flow. The scope of the first set of 4 volumes presents the fundamentals of the two-phase flows and heat transfer mechanisms, and describes in detail the most important prediction methods, while the scope of the second set of 4 volumes presents numerous special topics and numerous applications, also including numerical simulation methods.Practicing engineers will find extensive coverage to applications involving: multi-microchannel evaporator cold plates for electronics cooling, boiling on enhanced tubes and tube bundles, flow pattern based methods for predicting boiling and condensation inside horizontal tubes, pressure drop methods for singularies (U-bends and contractions), boiling in multiport tubes, and boiling and condensation in plate heat exchangers. All of these chapters include the latest methods for predicting not only local heat transfer coefficients but also pressure drops.Professors and students will find this 'Encyclopedia of Two-Phase Heat Transfer and Flow' particularly exciting, as it contains authored books and thorough state-of-the-art reviews on many basic and special topics, such as numerical modeling of two-phase heat transfer and adiabatic bubbly and slug flows, the unified annular flow boiling model, flow pattern maps, condensation and boiling theories, new emerging topics, etc.
