Book excerpt: A Deeper Well is the culmination of a lifetime of seeking God. The journey of a penitent heart in turmoil, spent yet contrite, determined to find the perpetual peace that one can only find through a life surrendered to the creator. After being raised in a Christian home by a mother who was an ardent follower of Christ, I was baptized at age 14 and accepted the Lord Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I soon walked away from my Christian principles, and found myself desiring the things of the world. All my disappointments hurt and anger were tossed over the wall I built around my heart. Life became tumultuous and it took me years to realize that the wonderfully made me had disappeared, giving place to someone I no longer recognized. Something was missing. In 1998 I migrated to Florida and was invited to church by my sister. I started attending services every Sunday, and became a regular tither. One night, while praying, I found myself sobbing. With a great sob and as if without my own effort, I was prostrate on the ground crying out to God. At that moment I surrendered my life to Him. The prayers and poems in A Deeper Well reflect my journey, the purging of my heart and finding my way back home to God. These poems are inspirations of situations and circumstances that I have encountered in daily life. The words are not my own, but the inspiration of the Holy Spirit who fills my thoughts and flows through my pen onto the pages. An awesome experience!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "McGhee writes confidently as one who remembers the ordinariness of adolescence as well as its angst . . . and compellingly creates a protagonist blindsided by loss." — Publishers Weekly (starred review) For seventeen-year-old Rose, it keeps happening — the car crash. The car crash that put her sister, Ivy, in a coma with only a respirator keeping her alive. While Rose tries to find support from her reticent mother, distraction from the series of boys she meets at the town’s gorge at night, and empathy from her neighbor William T., what she really needs must come from within herself — a release of what’s been welling up inside. Heartrending, honest, and ultimately hopeful, this is the tale of a teenager overwhelmed by trauma and loss, yet steadied by loyal friendship and the solace of first love.

Book excerpt: In his professional and personal life Bob, aka Robert D Weed, is deemed totally useless — or, perhaps, he is the smart one and everyone around him is terminally daft. Bob is a human weed who is tugged and pulled by a world that wants to uproot him but which discovers that he cannot be so easily tossed on the compost. “... it’s really witty and very strong ... I would compare the writing to Robert Rankin, or a really satirically biting Tom Sharpe, and will say […] that I’m really impressed by it.” — A London publisher “… Weed … is a tale that somehow manages to combine the frustrations of modern urban Mclife and blancmange abuse in the same story… a tale that is likely to feel sheepishly familiar yet feverishly alien… depending on your views about the uses of sticky puddings.” — Kyoto After Dark “Weed is a brilliantly written comedic novel while at the same time a harsh criticism of modern consumerist society. The lyrically attractive writing style spoke to me and does a good job of creating a vision of this fictitious yet very real world and company. It reminded me of Terry Gilliam’s movie Brazil ... If you, like the protagonist, sometimes find yourself drowning in the rat race for conformity and mediocrity, this book is for you.” — Amazon review “It’s so funny I weed myself. Geddit?” — The author made up this quote himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hallucinogenic Rooster is a moment captured in time, a dreamlike and nightmarish expansion of one brief moment. In a place called Fairy Tale Town, some years ago, I walked with a girl I was in love with among grimy fantasies; a concrete Pirate ship, a castle and drinking fountains in the form of hippos and tin soldiers. Strange music came over loudspeakers. Three of us (we were baby-sitting her sister's infant) as a sort of makeshift family walked in this strange place. I watched a rooster walk in and out of shadows and light. I hallucinated that I was seeing its molecules and atoms coming apart and reassembling in bright colors. I chose this event to represent the moment when we could have spoken to each other with our hearts but instead kept our silence. . . This book is a sort of poetic expansion of that brief, lonely and beautiful moment.

Book excerpt: Cherry Blossom Epiphany - the poetry and philosophy of a flowering tree - a selection, translation and lengthy explication of 3000 haiku, waka, senryû and kyôka about a major theme from I.P.O.O.H. (In Praise Of Olde Haiku)by robin d. gill 1. Haiku -Translation from Japanese to English 2. Japanese poetry - 8c-20c - waka, haiku and senryû 3. Natural History - flowering cherries 4. Japan - Culture - Edo Era 5. Nonfiction - Literature 6. Translation - applied 7. You tell me! If the solemn yet happy New Year's is the most important celebration of Japanese (Yamato) ethnic culture, and the quiet aesthetic practice of Moon-viewing in the fall the most elegant expression of Pan-Asian Buddhism=religion, the subject of this book, Blossom-viewing - which generally means sitting down together in vast crowds to drink, dance, sing and otherwise enjoy the flowering cherry in full-bloom - is less a rite than a riot (a word originally meaning an 'uproar'). The major carnival of the year, it is unusual for being held on a date that is not determined by astronomy, astrology or the accidents of history as most such events are in literate cultures. It takes place whenever the cherry trees are good and ready. Enjoyed in the flesh, the blossom-viewing, or hanami, is also of the mind, so much so, in fact, that poetry is often credited with the spread of the practice over the centuries from the Imperial courts to the maids of Edo. Nobles enjoyed link-verse contests presided over by famous poet-judges. Hermits hung poems feting this flower of flowers (to say the generic "flower" = hana in Japanese connotes "cherry!") on strips of paper from the branches of lone trees where only the wind would read them. In the Occident, too, flowers embody beauty and serve as reminders of mortality, but there is no flower that, like the cherry blossom, stands for all flowers. Even the rose, by any name, cannot compare with the sakura in depth and breadth of poetic trope or viewing practice. In Cherry Blossom Epiphany, Robin D. Gill hopes to help readers experience, metaphysically, some of this alternative world. Haiku is a hyper-short (17-syllabet or 7-beat) Japanese poem directly or indirectly touching upon seasonal phenomena, natural or cultural. Literally millions of these ku have been written, some, perhaps, many times, about the flowering cherry (sakura), and the human activity associated with it, blossom-viewing (hanami). As the most popular theme in traditional haiku (haikai), cherry-blossom ku tend to be overlooked by modern critics more interested in creativity expressed with fresh subjects; but this embarrassment of riches has much to offer the poet who is pushed to come up with something, anything, different from the rest and allows the editor to select from what is, for all practical purposes, an infinite number of ku. Literary critics, take note: Like Rise, Ye Sea Slugs! (2003) and Fly-ku! (2004), this book not only explores new ways to anthologize poetry but demonstrates the practice of multiple readings (an average of two per ku) as part of a composite translation turned into an object of art by innovative clustering. Book-collectors might further note that while Cherry Blossom Epiphany may not be hardback, it takes advantage of the many symbols included with Japanese font to introduce design ornamentation (the circle within the circle, the reverse (Buddhist) swastika, etc.) hitherto not found in English language print. It is a one-of-a-kind work of design by the author.
