Book excerpt: Absalom Falls, a small town nestled in the mountains of North Georgia, seems like the kind of place where a person could go to for refuge from the problems of our modern world. At least, that's what Gideon and Jordy Shaw are hoping when they move there to recuperate from their latest adventure. Assuming the identities of two teachers at Absalom Falls Academy, an exclusive private boarding school, they make friends with Miles Liu and his daughter, Cassie, and enjoy their mundane lives. However, an unspeakable evil from the distant past is on the move behind the scenes, hidden beneath the tranquility of small town life, and it is preparing to unleash the forces of hell on earth.

Book excerpt: "A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

This book was released on 2003-10-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By subjecting biblical writings to a political analysis, Sicker constructs a plausible political history of the ancient Israelite states that dealt with virtually every issue faced by governments throughout subsequent history. As he makes clear, the way they dealt with those issues, successfully or otherwise, is highly instructive and relevant to today's analysis of geopolitical issues. Our knowledge of the political history of ancient Israel is almost exclusively dependent on the information that may be gleaned from biblical writings, which reflect a historiosophical perspective very different from that employed in modern historical writing. Nonetheless and despite all the problems encountered in dealing with the biblical texts, the history of the ancient Israelite states that can be derived from them has much to offer a student of politics. Instead of the critical literary analysis common to contemporary biblical studies, Sicker constructs a plausible political history of the ancient Israelite states that takes into consideration the geopolitical realities that directly conditioned much of that history as well as the religious dimensions of Israelite political culture that played a critical role in it. He demonstrates that the ancient Israelite states were confronted by virtually every political dilemma, domestic and international, encountered by states and governments throughout the subsequent history of the world. The way they dealt with the issues, successfully or otherwise, is highly instructive and relevant to the complex issues faced by states and governments today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anger is not just ubiquitous, it is also popular. Many people think it is impossible to care sufficiently for justice without anger at injustice. Many believe that it is impossible for individuals to vindicate their own self-respect or to move beyond an injury without anger. To not feel anger in those cases would be considered suspect. Is this how we should think about anger, or is anger above all a disease, deforming both the personal and the political? In this wide-ranging book, Martha C. Nussbaum, one of our leading public intellectuals, argues that anger is conceptually confused and normatively pernicious. It assumes that the suffering of the wrongdoer restores the thing that was damaged, and it betrays an all-too-lively interest in relative status and humiliation. Studying anger in intimate relationships, casual daily interactions, the workplace, the criminal justice system, and movements for social transformation, Nussbaum shows that anger's core ideas are both infantile and harmful. Is forgiveness the best way of transcending anger? Nussbaum examines different conceptions of this much-sentimentalized notion, both in the Jewish and Christian traditions and in secular morality. Some forms of forgiveness are ethically promising, she claims, but others are subtle allies of retribution: those that exact a performance of contrition and abasement as a condition of waiving angry feelings. In general, she argues, a spirit of generosity (combined, in some cases, with a reliance on impartial welfare-oriented legal institutions) is the best way to respond to injury. Applied to the personal and the political realms, Nussbaum's profoundly insightful and erudite view of anger and forgiveness puts both in a startling new light.

It describes His creation schemes, and the majesty of man - reflecting on his direction, history, and responsibilities. It defines in an understanding way the selection and plan for the family God chose to represent Him here on earth, delineatiing their sojourn history, their development, accomplishments, perils, downfall, and resurection to current day status, . It describes the chosen family''s decision process within which their sinful ways and activities led to varying degrees of punishment. But yet, it gives them renewed hope for achieving God''s plan for mankind through the reiterating process of God''s word. It gives a description of the Holy land, its boundaries, and tribal allocations, describing what it was in Joshua''s time and what it is yet to be. Delineating that parcel of land which is yet to be totally set aside and allocated for the sole purpose and use by The Lord God in support of the holy city of Jerusalem (The Lord Is There) and Holy Temple where He will reign here on earth for 1,000 years. It speaks of the first resurrection and the second coming of The Lord Jesus Christ, His reign on earth, the second resurrection after the 1,000 year reign of The Lord, and final judgment of mankind by Him. A Chronology of events relating to Israel''s wellbeing is provided, and a Time Table delineating dates of specific events is also attached. It is with prayer and hope that all readers will find this book of special value, educational, and of profound benifit for all.
