This lively, illustrated celebration is jam-packed with creatures notable for their bizarre, baffling, and just-plain-funny names. Meet the White-Bellied Go-Away Bird, whose cry sounds like someone screaming, "Go away!" Or the Aye-Aye, whose name means "I don't know" in Malagasy because no one wants anything to do with this bad-luck creature. Some are obvious, if still weird––guess what the Fried Egg Jellyfish looks like. Others sound like an inside joke: It's easy to figure out what was on the taxonomist's mind when he christened a fly he discovered Pieza Pie. Along the way you'll learn all about these curiously named animals' just-as-curious habits, appearances, and abilities.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 Rachel Carson Environment Book Award * Winner of the 2022 Science in Society Journalism Award (Books) * Finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize “Thoughtful, insightful, and wise, Wild Souls is a landmark work.”--Ed Yong, author of An Immense World "Fascinating . . . hands-on philosophy, put to test in the real world . . . Marris believes that our idea of wildness--our obsession with purity--is misguided. No animal remains untouched by human hands . . . the science isn't the hard part. The real challenge is the ethics, the act of imagining our appropriate place in that world." --Outside Magazine From an acclaimed environmental writer, a groundbreaking and provocative new vision for our relationships with--and responsibilities toward--the planet's wild animals. Protecting wild animals and preserving the environment are two ideals so seemingly compatible as to be almost inseparable. But in fact, between animal welfare and conservation science there exists a space of underexamined and unresolved tension: wildness itself. When is it right to capture or feed wild animals for the good of their species? How do we balance the rights of introduced species with those already established within an ecosystem? Can hunting be ecological? Are any animals truly wild on a planet that humans have so thoroughly changed? No clear guidelines yet exist to help us resolve such questions. Transporting readers into the field with scientists tackling these profound challenges, Emma Marris tells the affecting and inspiring stories of animals around the globe--from Peruvian monkeys to Australian bilbies, rare Hawai'ian birds to majestic Oregon wolves. And she offers a companionable tour of the philosophical ideas that may steer our search for sustainability and justice in the non-human world. Revealing just how intertwined animal life and human life really are, Wild Souls will change the way we think about nature-and our place within it.

A message overshadowed by religion and, to some extent, misunderstood by both Christians and non-Christians. In this book, What Is Your Name? Pastor Jackson brings to light the theme and focus of Christs message and why He came to die for the world. You will be encouraged to reexamine your life as you take a closer look at where you fit in the plan of God. Who am I to God? and how does He see me? These questions can easily be answered once youve discovered your heavenly name. This book will provide you with these answers and some thought-provoking concepts about names and heavens name for you, such as, -Why Names Are Important to God -Gods Purpose for Names -What Is Your Heavenly Name -Satan: The Enemy of Your Name -Living Up to Your Name Discovering your heavenly name can add meaning to your life and give you value beyond your earthly name. God wanted to give you more than dominion; He wanted you to have His image and likeness and a heavenly name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Pantaleon? Traditionally, Pantaleon is remembered as the personal doctor of Emperor Maximian at the time of the third and fourth century A.D. Three hundred years after the rule of Julius Caesar or Emperor Augustus, the Roman Empire still continues to exist. The Emperor Diocletian (Maximian) has divided the Empire into two halves. During this period, Milan is the capital city of the Western half, while Nicomedia serves as the Easterm capital. Rome is no longer the capital and Contantinople is still yet to be founded around one generation later by Constantine the Great. Nicomedia, which today is called Izmit at Lake Marmara, is where the young physician Pantaleon was born and lived. His father Eustorgios is a pagan, and his mother Eucuba is a fervent Christian faithful. The process taking place across the whole Roman Empire is the transition from a pagan society into an constantly persecuted Christian religion. This same process also takes place within the heart of our young hero, Pantaleon. An extraordinary experience leads him to believe in Christ. In his saintly self-forgetfulness, he dedicates his further life to the sick, who admire and love him for his friendliness and his gift of healing. While all people, especially the girls, like him because of his amiability, he sticks to his dedication towards Christ, the Divine Healer. In the iconic paintings of the Orthodox church, Panteleimon (as they call him) is always portrayed as a youthful “Figure of Beauty“, without a beard. On the 27th of July in the year 305 A.D., he dies as a martyr at only 27 years of age. In the Western Church, he is included among the “Fourteen Helpers“, whereas in the orthodox world, he stands in the middle of the Twelve “Anargyroi“ (those who help unselfishly). (Peter von Steinitz, the author of this novel, was parrish priest in the ancient Basilica of St. Pantaleon in Cologne, Germany from 1987 until 2007)

Tackling both theory and practice, the text is divided into two parts. The first describes key concepts, ethical theories, and management models relating to wildlife; the second puts these concepts, theories, and models to work, illustrating their significance through detailed case studies on controversies in wildlife management and conservation. The book explores pressing topics including human responsibilities due to climate change, tradeoffs when managing zoonotic disease risks, the ethics of the wildlife trade, culling non-native species, indigenous wildlife use, and zoo-based conservation programs. Readers are encouraged to explore different ways of valuing wild animals and their practical implications. This essential text: Explains and explores relationships between valuing biodiversity, human utility, ecosystems, species, and animal welfare Describes established approaches to wildlife management, such as sustainable use, and emerging concepts, such as compassionate conservation Discusses key ethical theories, including utilitarianism, ecocentrism, and animal rights Offers a practical model of how to analyze ethical issues in wildlife management and conservation Wildlife Ethics: The Ethics of Wildlife Management and Conservation is an accessible introduction to complex ethical issues, making the book an important resource for students in fields such as conservation biology, ecology, environmental science and policy, game management, public health and veterinary medicine.
