Book excerpt: What is most compelling about Linda Susan Jackson's debut collection of poems, What Yellow Sounds Like, is the extraordinary self-possession of its young female narrator as she seeks to answer'who am I and to whom do I belong? These poems are about the process of shaping the identity of one girl who comes from "a line of technicolor women" who have "honey/suckle buried freely in the folds of their flesh," a girl who comes from "men who bit their tongues, /ate dirt, dust and their pride. Worked anywhere," and could "soar off the ground." The terrain of Jackson's poems is particular, perilous, loving, humorous, passionate, uncompromising, contradictory--in other words, vastly human. The language is varied and inflected with the blues, and like the blues, pulls readers in through images and details that are both concrete and symbolic. Poem after poem charts the stages of this young girl's development through her relationships with her family, her history, and the America into which she is born that is defined by race, skin color, gender, and class. The narrator develops a profound and essential connection to the legendary singer, Etta James, the "canary colored blues woman" and she recognizes the power in the sound of words as she recollects how Etta James "churned up her roar/to keep other women from dying." Near the end of the book, her great-grandmother tells her "Everything don't need to be told. Some things must." In this moment, the narrator is empowered to decide what to tell and to tell it in her own voice. These poems celebrate the sheer will and determination of the self to seek out and find who or what it needs to grow and prosper. Because she was homesick for the smell of Virginia tobacco and pit-roasted hog; because she longed to hear her big brother scratch out blues on his box; because she craved the feel of corn silk and had six stair-step children before she was twenty-five, she went to the funerals of strangers. -from Family Outing

Do you wish you could sometimes put the world on mute? You might not have heard of misophonia, but if sounds can send you spiralling, you may have experienced it. In fact, it's thought that one in five of us have it. Sounds Like Misophonia is the first dedicated guide to help you make sense of the condition and design a treatment plan that works for you. Using techniques from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), clinical psychologist Dr Jane Gregory takes you through step-by-step exercises to change your relationship with sounds and streamline your coping strategies. Alongside you on your journey is podcaster and misophone Adeel Ahmad, who carries out experiments and shares case studies from volunteers around the world. With humour and understanding, Sounds Like Misophonia offers practical ways to navigate this noisy world and live a fulfilling life, instead of fighting against it.

Book excerpt: What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goal posts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care? In search of answers, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game. A movable feast of Weber grills and Igloo coolers, these are hard-core football fans who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday’s game: The Reeses, who skipped their own daughter’s wedding because it coincided with a Bama game; Ray Pradat, the Episcopal minister who watches the games on a television beside his altar while performing weddings; and John Ed, the wheeling and dealing ticket scalper whose access to good seats gives him power on par with the governor. In no time at all, St. John buys an RV (a $5,500 beater named The Hawg) and joins the caravan for a full football season, chronicling the world of the extreme fan and learning that in the shadow of the stadium, it can all begin to seem strangely normal. Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is not only a hilarious travel story, but a cultural anthropology of fans that goes a long way toward demystifying the universal urge to take sides and to win.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-something Beverly Brown, who feels as common as her name, embarks on an insightful, and often humorous journey of self-discovery. Along the way she meets Grant, a paraplegic French Canadian, who relights her passion for music and helps her discover things she never realized about herself. But they both know right from the get-go that they only have six weeks before he moves back to Montreal, and he does not believe in long distance relationships. Is it worth the risk to open up her heart again knowing it will soon be broken? Or can she make him change his mind? Theres also Jack, the part-time judge she works with. There is a bit of sexual tension in their friendly relationship that Bev tries hard to ignore. Now Jack has offered her a job in his law firm in the city. It sounds exciting, but also seems a bit more change than she is ready to make. Throw in her needy adult children, her narrow minded family and her manipulative ex-husband and it is easy to see how Bev has locked herself away in her self-made cocoon for so long. This is not a romance, but there is love. It is not religious, but there is spiritual confl ict. It is not a comedy, though there is humor. It is, however, a life changing story of confronting guilt, regret, and unfulfilled dreams, and rediscovering passion and hope for a purpose filled future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toward the end of the year 1920 the Government of the United States had practically completed the programme, adopted during the last months of President Winthrop's administration. The country was apparently tranquil. Everybody knows how the Tariff and Labour questions were settled. The war with Germany, incident on that country's seizure of the Samoan Islands, had left no visible scars upon the republic, and the temporary occupation of Norfolk by the invading army had been forgotten in the joy over repeated naval victories, and the subsequent ridiculous plight of General Von Gartenlaube's forces in the State of New Jersey. The Cuban and Hawaiian investments had paid one hundred per cent and the territory of Samoa was well worth its cost as a coaling station. The country was in a superb state of defence. Every coast city had been well supplied with land fortifications; the army under the parental eye of the General Staff, organized according to the Prussian system, had been increased to 300,000 men, with a territorial reserve of a million; and six magnificent squadrons of cruisers and battle-ships patrolled the six stations of the navigable seas, leaving a steam reserve amply fitted to control home waters. The gentlemen from the West had at last been constrained to acknowledge that a college for the training of diplomats was as necessary as law schools are for the training of barristers; consequently we were no longer represented abroad by incompetent patriots. The nation was prosperous; Chicago, for a moment paralyzed after a second great fire, had risen from its ruins, white and imperial, and more beautiful than the white city which had been built for its plaything in 1893. Everywhere good architecture was replacing bad, and even in New York, a sudden craving for decency had swept away a great portion of the existing horrors. Streets had been widened, properly paved and lighted, trees had been planted, squares laid out, elevated structures demolished and underground roads built to replace them. The new government buildings and barracks were fine bits of architecture, and the long system of stone quays which completely surrounded the island had been turned into parks which proved a god-send to the population. The subsidizing of the state theatre and state opera brought its own reward. The United States National Academy of Design was much like European institutions of the same kind. Nobody envied the Secretary of Fine Arts, either his cabinet position or his portfolio. The Secretary of Forestry and Game Preservation had a much easier time, thanks to the new system of National Mounted Police. We had profited well by the latest treaties with France and England; the exclusion of foreign-born Jews as a measure of self-preservation, the settlement of the new independent negro state of Suanee, the checking of immigration, the new laws concerning naturalization, and the gradual centralization of power in the executive all contributed to national calm and prosperity. When the Government solved the Indian problem and squadrons of Indian cavalry scouts in native costume were substituted for the pitiable organizations tacked on to the tail of skeletonized regiments by a former Secretary of War, the nation drew a long sigh of relief. When, after the colossal Congress of Religions, bigotry and intolerance were laid in their graves and kindness and charity began to draw warring sects together, many thought the millennium had arrived, at least in the new world which after all is a world by itself.

Book excerpt: Second Yellow: More Adventures of our Footballing Heroes brings you more funny, fascinating and downright baffling tales gleaned by authors John Smith and Dan Trelfer from their unflagging research of over 240 footballer autobiographies. Together, they have pored through the works of genuine legends, cult heroes and players they can only dimly recall from their 1983 Panini sticker albums to find stories and facts that will delight, shock and confuse - sometimes all at once. There's the chairman who owned a ventriloquist's dummy called Algernon. There's the Liverpool legend who set a team-mate's wife's hair on fire. There's the Arsenal star who confronted some innocent fans with a samurai sword. And there's the Ipswich hero who took on Sylvester Stallone in an arm-wrestling contest - possibly inspiring Stallone's half-forgotten epic Over The Top. This book covers all the bases of the typical footballer's life: love, violence, gambling, horrific injury, banter (it's mostly banter) and, apparently, pigeons.
