And what happens when we talk about it from the particular point of view of higher education art institutions? This thesis acknowledges the complexity of civic engagement when organized by art institutions, especially when the main vehicle for the engagement are design and artistic practices due to the difficulty that exists when trying to measure the impact of these practices in society. At the same time, there's an awareness in it of the constant flux of working with communities: society is ever-changing, and civic and socially engaged art practices are rooted in the past, present, and future of these specific landscapes, so adaptability to constant change is one of the biggest challenges in the field. Because of this, instead of trying to decipher a one-size-fits-all method for these practices, this thesis aims to provide a snapshot of a few models of civic engagement from academic art institutions in this point in time. This snapshot is informed by the current (2018) political climate, funding trends, challenges in contemporary higher education, and the evolution of civic engagement itself. This snapshot will be informed by case studies developed through interviews with directors from five civically aimed offices and initiatives inside of Art Schools. Interviews include: JD Beltran, Director of the Center for Impact at the California College for the Arts; Jaclyn Jacunski, Director of Civic Engagement at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Aileen Wilson, Director of the Center for Community Engagement K-12 at the Pratt Institute; Maggie Villegas, Director of the Baltimore Creatives Accelerator Network at the Maryland Institute College of Art; and Lauren Pearson Assistant Director of the Arts Research Center at the University of California at Berkeley.
