Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What came first, the story or the image? "What the Animals Had to Say" explores the relationship between the creation of images and stories. As an illustrator, I often create illustrations for stories, but in this work the images informed the stories, and both later defined the final illustrations. Beyond this process, this work is a minute version of human history, or passages of it, as some sacred books have recorded. It also depicts different facets coexisting in our own personalities that shape our behaviors. As a spiritual book, as its narrative suggests, it calls for a harmony between man and nature and within man himself. "What the Animals Had to Say" is a hybrid work rooted in oriental philosophy, similar to the five ancient books of the "Panchatantra" which were the first animal fables to appear in literature. The author hopes readers will fall in love with the characters, animals and human-like as well, with more compassion than judgment, and prays for we all make a journey of transformation from the "seven days" and "one night" into the dawn.

The tales start from simple to more complicated themes to learn Spanish & English. This will help them learn faster. Each tale will have vocabulary words to help them understand. At the end of each story are included questions and answers similar to the TPR Storytelling technique. My inspirations for some of the tales were songs I learned when I was a child. I hope teachers and students will enjoy and learn Spanish and English (for ELL) by reading short stories. Este libro consiste en literatura para niños. Book excerpt: This innovative college-level textbook for third-year college Spanish courses introduces the student to Latin American literature using a unique bilingual approach in which an English translation parallels the Spanish original. As such it is appropriate for courses which attempt to make the transition from basic language-acquisition courses to upper level elective language courses. Dr. Child also employs an historical approach, starting with the pre-Columbian oral traditions and covering five centuries through the Mexican Revolution; other features include an introductory biographical section, numerous graphs, charts, and a glossary of terms.

Book excerpt: A year-long study of the writing development of 27 first through third graders in an English/Spanish bilingual program was conducted during the 1980-81 school year. Samples of the children's writing were collected at four intervals, coded for computer tallying, and analyzed in terms of code-switching, spelling, punctuation and segmentation, structural features, stylistic devices, and content. Additionally, the context in which the writing developed was evaluated by classroom observations, teacher interviews, review of familial backgrounds, and a survey of the community language situation. Myths about bilingual language proficiency, biliteracy, bilingual education, teaching writing, and learning to write are all countered by evidence presented in this study. In a discussion of implications, the concept of a whole language approach to writing instruction is supported, in which authentic and functional texts are offered to and produced by children. Examples of the children's writing with appropriate translations are given along with various tables. Informal follow-up information is presented in three epilogues dealing with changes in the researcher's commitment to the study's original writing theories, the writing of some students a year after the study; and a chronological outline of the demise of the bilingual program used in the study. Appendices list interview questions used for teachers and aides and categories for coding the writing data. This book contains 134 references. (ALL)
