Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrate the freedom to read with this timely, empowering middle-grade debut in the spirit of The View from Saturday or Frindle. When twelve-year-old June Harper's parents discover what they deem an inappropriate library book, they take strict parenting to a whole new level. And everything June loves about Dogwood Middle School unravels: librarian Ms. Bradshaw is suspended, an author appearance is canceled, the library is gutted, and all books on the premises must have administrative approval. But June can't give up books . . . and she realizes she doesn't have to when she spies a Little Free Library on her walk to school. As the rules become stricter at school and at home, June keeps turning the pages of the banned books that continue to appear in the little library. It's a delicious secret . . . and one she can't keep to herself. June starts a banned book library of her own in an abandoned locker at school. The risks grow alongside her library's popularity, and a movement begins at Dogwood Middle--a movement that, if exposed, could destroy her. But if it's powerful enough, maybe it can save Ms. Bradshaw and all that she represents: the freedom to read. Equal parts fun and empowering, this novel explores censorship, freedom of speech, and activism. For any kid who doesn't believe one person can effect change...and for all the kids who already know they can!

Book excerpt: I Can Do Hard Things is a beautiful reminder to tune into and listen to that quiet voice inside so that you can do what's right for you. I don't always feel brave, confident or strong. Sometimes it seems easier to follow others along. It's hard to navigate a world in which we get so many messages about how we should be. We pause. We listen to the quiet voice inside. I connect with the love and strength it brings. It helps me remember: I can do hard things. I Can Do Hard Things: Mindful Affirmations for Kids is the perfect addition to your home or school library. This book was released on 2005 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to read is the key to educational achievement, and poor literacy skills will limit a person's opportunities throughout life. The Committee's inquiry examines current practice in schools used to teach children to read, in order to consider which method works best based on available evidence. Recognition is given that the subject is a complex one and is also influenced by a range of factors outside a school's control. Issues discussed include the impact of the National Literacy Strategy (NLS); literacy teaching methods including the phonics method, which focuses on sound-letter correspondence; the need to promote reading for pleasure; research evidence findings; barriers to reading acquisition; learning difficulties and disabilities. Current statistics indicate that around 20 per cent of children aged 11 years still underachieve in reading and writing skills for their age level. The Committee's recommendations include the need for a review of the NLS prescribed methodology for the teaching of reading in primary schools, and that further large-scale comparative research should be commissioned by the DfES to determine which methods are most effective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pages of this book illustrate that as instruments of socialization and sites of ideological discourse textbooks are powerful artefacts in introducing young people to a specific historical, cultural and socioeconomic order. Crucially, exploring the social construction of school textbooks and the messages they impart provides an important context from within which to critically investigate the dynamics underlying the cultural politics of education and the social movements that form it and which are formed by it. The school curriculum is essentially the knowledge system of a society incorporating its values and its dominant ideology. The curriculum is not “our knowledge” born of a broad hegemonic consensus, rather it is a battleground in which cultural authority and the right to define what is labelled legitimate knowledge is fought over. As each chapter in this book illustrates curriculum as theory and practice has never been, and can never be, divorced from the ethical, economic, political, and cultural conflicts of society which impact so deeply upon it. We cannot escape the clear implication that questions about what knowledge is of most worth and about how it should be organized and taught are problematic, contentious and very serious.
