Book Synopsis The Williamite Wars in Ireland by : John Childs
Download or read book The Williamite Wars in Ireland written by John Childs and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2007-06-20 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The comprehensive defeat of the Jacobite Irish in the Williamite conflict, a component within the pan-European Nine Years' War, prevented the exiled James II from regaining his English throne, ended realistic prospects of a Stuart restoration and partially secured the new regime of King William III and Queen Mary created by the Glorious Revolution. The principal events - the Siege of Londonderry, the Battles of the Boyne and Aughrim, and the two Sieges and Treaty of Limerick - have subsequently become totems around which opposing constructions of Irish history have been erected. John Childs, one of the foremost authorities on warfare in Early Modern Britain and Europe, cuts through myth and the accumulations of three centuries to present a balanced, detailed narrative and chronology of the campaigns. He argues that the struggle was typical of the late seventeenth-century, principally decided by economic resources and attrition in which the 'small war' comprising patrols, raids, occupation of captured regions by small garrisons, police actions against irregulars and attacks on supply lines was more significant in determining the outcome than the set piece battles and sieges.

Book excerpt: "Ships in the Bay!" is a historical novel set during unsuccessful French invasion near Liverpool in a late eighteenth-century. Tyrrell enjoys the affection of beautiful Miss Nest Meredith and an unusual friendship of Mr. Jerome Salt, the antiquarian and historian. The French attack arrives suitably for Martin to clear himself of treasonable motives and with the help of his friend he proceeds to pursue his fair lady, and prove his honorable intentions._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_

Book Synopsis The Martyrdom of Maev and Other Irish Stories by : Harold Frederic
Download or read book The Martyrdom of Maev and Other Irish Stories written by Harold Frederic and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2015-09-12 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Martyrdom of Maev and Other Irish Stories gathers for the first time all of the Irish work Harold Frederic completed in his lifetime. He planned more, but died of a stroke in his early forties, in England, where he was employed as The New York Times London Correspondent. He had earlier written his publisher that he had been "toiling for years" on the archeology of the Iveagha (present Mizen) Peninsula in Cork, and that the projected book of historical fiction underway would be unique. The Martyrdom of Maev and Other Irish Stories brings together the four sixteenth-century stories that Frederic finished and published in magazines in 1895-96, and two of his stories set in the west of Ireland of the second-half of the nineteenth century.
