Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a major increase in research into the effects of the arts on health and well-being, alongside developments in practice and policy activities in different countries across the WHO European Region and further afield. This report synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, with a specific focus on the WHO European Region. Results from over 3000 studies identified a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

Book Synopsis New Insights in the Health Benefits of Art by : Olivier Beauchet
Download or read book New Insights in the Health Benefits of Art written by Olivier Beauchet and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2019, the World Health Organization demonstrated with a scoping review that art-based activities, regardless of their characteristics, have promising health benefits. More specifically, practicing art-based activities was demonstrated to contribute to core determinants of health, to play a key role in health promotion and prevention—especially with regard to the onset of mental illness and age-related physical decline—and to assist in acute and end-of-life care. This report also underscored, first, a lack of robust data on art’s health benefits, meaning data obtained with gold-standard experimental study designs (i.e., randomized control trials) and second, that certain topics (e.g., social health) and populations (e.g., older community dwellers) have been underexamined. In addition, little is known about both the mechanisms of art’s health benefits and how to implement an art-based activity for health purposes in practice.

Book Synopsis Education and the UN Sustainable Development Goals by : Kim Beasy
Download or read book Education and the UN Sustainable Development Goals written by Kim Beasy and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the complex relationship between education and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlights how important context is for both critiquing and achieving the Goals though education, given the critical role teachers, schools and curriculum play in young people’s lives. Readers will find examples of thinking and practice across the spectrum of education and training sectors, both formal and informal. The book adds to the increasing body of literature that recognises that education is, and must be, in its praxis, at the heart of all the SDGs. As we enter the third decade of the 21st century, we have a clear understanding of the wicked and complex crises regarding the health of life on our planet, and we cannot ignore the high levels of anxiety our young people are experiencing about their future. Continuing in the direction of unsustainable exploitation of people and nature is no longer an option if life is to have a flourishing future. The book illustrates how SDGs are supported in and by education and training, showcasing the conditions necessary to ensure SDGs are fore fronted in policy reform. It includes real-world examples of SDGs in education and training contexts, as well as novel critiques of the SDGs in regard to their privileging of anthropocentrism and neoliberalism. This book is beneficial to academics, researchers, post graduate and tertiary students from all fields relating to education and training. It is also of interest to policy developers from across disciplines and government agencies who are interested in how the SDGs relate to education.

However, their interconnections have received far less attention, even though the identification of these interdependencies is critical to the comprehensive understanding and advancement of wellbeing"--

Book Synopsis Movement of knowledge by : Kristofer Hansson
Download or read book Movement of knowledge written by Kristofer Hansson and published by Nordic Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medical knowledge is always in motion. It moves from the lab to the office, from a press release to a patient, from an academic journal to a civil servant's desk and then on to a policymaker. These movements matter: value judgements on the validity of certain forms of knowledge determine the direction of clinical research, and policy decisions are taken in relation to existing knowledge. The complexity of medical information and its wider effects is the focus of Movement of knowledge. The authors address the pervasive influence of knowledge in medical and public health settings and scrutinize a range of methodological and theoretical tools to study knowledge. They take a multidisciplinary approach to the medical humanities, presenting both contemporary and historical perspectives in order to explore the borderlands between expertise and common knowledge. Medical knowledge is deconstructed, reconstructed, and transformed as it moves between patients, health providers, and society at large. The acceptance or rejection of treatment protocols based on medical 'facts' has a fundamental impact on us all.
Book Synopsis The Impact of Music on Human Development and Well-Being by : Michele Biasutti
Download or read book The Impact of Music on Human Development and Well-Being written by Michele Biasutti and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-07-17 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music is one of the most universal ways of expression and communication in human life and is present in the everyday lives of people of all ages and from all cultures around the world. Music represents an enjoyable activity in and of itself, but its influence goes beyond simple amusement. Listening to music, singing, playing, composing and improvising, individually and collectively, are common activities for many people: these activities not only allow the expression of personal inner states and feelings, but also can bring many positive effects to those who engage in them. There is an increasing wealth of literature concerning the wider benefits of musical activity, and research in the sciences associated with music suggests that there are many dimensions of human life (physical, social, psychological—including cognitive and emotional) which can be affected positively by music. The impact that musical activity has on human life can be found in different processes, including a transfer of learning from the musical to another cognitive domain. Abilities that have been developed through music education and training may also be effectively applied in other cognitive tasks. Engagement in successful music activity may also have a positive impact on social skills and social inclusion, thus supporting the participation of the individual in collective and collaborative musical events. The promotion of social participation through music can foster many kinds of inclusion, including intercultural, intergenerational, and support for those who are differently abled. The aim of this Research Topic is to present a diverse range of original articles that investigate and discuss, in different ways, the crucial role that musical activity can play in human development and well-being.

Book Synopsis Non-biomedical Perspectives on Pain and its Prevention and Management by : Mark I. Johnson
Download or read book Non-biomedical Perspectives on Pain and its Prevention and Management written by Mark I. Johnson and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overreliance on the biomedical paradigm has contributed, in part, to illogical use of surgery and long-term opioid medication with harmful physical, psychological, social, and economic consequences. Pain literature is dominated by biomedical research at the expense of a holistic understanding of the lived experience of pain. Pain practice seems overly consumed with the burden of pain at an individual level (patient-centred pain management) and has neglected exploration of societal level (community-centred) or environmental level (ecologically-centred) solutions.
