Here is a special deluxe edition of a book that has changed millions of lives and launched the modern recovery movement: Alcoholics Anonymous. This edition not only reproduces the original 1939 text of Alcoholics Anonymous, but as a special bonus features the complete 1941 Saturday Evening Post article “Alcoholics Anonymous” by journalist Jack Alexander, which, at the time, did as much as the book itself to introduce millions of seekers to AA’s program. Alcoholics Anonymous has touched and transformed myriad lives, and finally appears in a volume that honors its posterity and impact.

Book excerpt: This is a book of reflections by A.A. members for A.A. members. It was first published in 1990 to fulfill a long-felt need within the Fellowship for a collection of reflections that moves through the calendar year--one day at a time. Each page contains a reflection on a quotation from A.A. Conference-approved literature, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, As Bill Sees It and other books. These reflections were submitted by members of the A.A. Fellowship who were not professional writers, nor did they speak for A.A. but only for themselves, from their own experiences in sobriety. Thus the book offers sharing, day by day, from a broad cross section of members, which focuses on the Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous: Recovery, Unity and Service. Daily Reflections has proved to be a popular book that aids individuals in their practice of daily meditation and provides inspiration to group discussions even as it presents an introduction for some to A.A. literature as a whole.

Book excerpt: Still Lost? It's Your Decision, An Alternate Step just may be the answer you are looking for. You have not yet found sanctuary from the devastation of alcoholism in the current forms of treatment available. You are not alone. You have tried Alcoholics Anonymous and they couldn't do it, and you are not a seeker of "Higher Powers" to save your butt. That leaves you in a dead zone most people will tell you is impossible to recover from. AA believes an alcoholic will never recover; you are forever in a recovery mode. Day by day. This author has a different view. AA can't help you. No higher power is going to help you. The author of this book can't help you. Take a long hard look in a mirror. Although you look similar to the reflection staring back at you, what you see and how others see you are actually two different people. So who has the best view of that image in the mirror? That answer may be a key to the end results you are searching for.

As a trained professional and an alcoholic I understand the disease from a whole different perspective. This gives the reader options they never knew they had. If you or a friend is troubled by alcohol, read this book to first find out what their status is with their drinking, and then what they can do about it. It's a simple solution for both issues but not an easy one. The solutions offered work, but only if the individual wants a way out of their predicament. Best of luck!

Book excerpt: If you or a friend has a "problem with alcohol" this guide may help you to find out if it is alcoholism or if it is problem drinking. The two issues have a few similarities but have more differences. As the saying goes "it's hard to work on the problem if you don't know what the problem is." Helping the inndividual identify what the real issue is, then they are free to decide what remedy to use. In most cases if the consumption of alcohol is frequent it may be needed to enter yourself into a local detox center to safely withdraw from alcohol and any other drugs. Withdrawl can be dangerous and having medical supervision during this process can save your life or safe you from injury during the withdrawl process. If you discover that you may be alcoholic, the program of AA will make a huge difference in not only getting sober, but finding contented sobriety. After 38 in the Program of Alcoholics Anonymous, I am still in awe of the miracles I see. People who are so messed up when they first come into this program and totally change into a rational, even thinking human beings. This happens not by just going to meetings, that won't do it. It is only by fully immersing yourself into the 12 Steps that an incredible metamorphosis happens. Trembling despairing people turn into people you would be pleased to know. Even to call them a friend, when a few short months before you wouldn't have allowed them into your home. By being honest with yourself, working to live on a spiritual basis and getting an open mind for new approaches to life is a big part of how it works. This is not a religious movement at all. Religion has rules. Spirituality has only guidelines and suggestions. The person is free to find their own way looking only to live by spiritual principals instead of their previous personality. The true beauty of this process is you get better in spite of yourself. You simply follow the steps and changes within happen. Even those around you, like friends and family, will notice a difference. It seems that once we address the spiritual sickness within (because we are spiritual beings) we straighten out mentally and physically. Over the last 38 years, I have had wondrous experiences watching people get their lives and families back. So if you're in trouble because of your drinking this guide will help you understand the problem and give you (or a friend) some real options if you wish to make a change. I wish the best for you and I hope I can be of service if needed. Anonymous Guest

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • “An unflinching examination of how our drinking culture hurts women and a gorgeous memoir of how one woman healed herself.”—Glennon Doyle, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Untamed “You don’t know how much you need this book, or maybe you do. Either way, it will save your life.”—Melissa Hartwig Urban, Whole30 co-founder and CEO The founder of the first female-focused recovery program offers a groundbreaking look at alcohol and a radical new path to sobriety. We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but. When Holly Whitaker decided to seek help after one too many benders, she embarked on a journey that led not only to her own sobriety, but revealed the insidious role alcohol plays in our society and in the lives of women in particular. What’s more, she could not ignore the ways that alcohol companies were targeting women, just as the tobacco industry had successfully done generations before. Fueled by her own emerging feminism, she also realized that the predominant systems of recovery are archaic, patriarchal, and ineffective for the unique needs of women and other historically oppressed people—who don’t need to lose their egos and surrender to a male concept of God, as the tenets of Alcoholics Anonymous state, but who need to cultivate a deeper understanding of their own identities and take control of their lives. When Holly found an alternate way out of her own addiction, she felt a calling to create a sober community with resources for anyone questioning their relationship with drinking, so that they might find their way as well. Her resultant feminine-centric recovery program focuses on getting at the root causes that lead people to overindulge and provides the tools necessary to break the cycle of addiction, showing us what is possible when we remove alcohol and destroy our belief system around it. Written in a relatable voice that is honest and witty, Quit Like a Woman is at once a groundbreaking look at drinking culture and a road map to cutting out alcohol in order to live our best lives without the crutch of intoxication. You will never look at drinking the same way again.

It can help guide you step by step into the bright light of the world of recovery.” —from the Foreword by Harry Haroutunian, M.D., Physician Director, Betty Ford Center “The Recovery Book is the Bible of recovery. Everything you need to know you will find in here.” —Neil Scott, host, Recovery Coast to Coast radio Hope, support, and a clear road map for people with drug or alcohol addiction. Announcing a completely revised and updated second edition of The Recovery Book, the Bible of addiction recovery. The Recovery Book provides a direct and easy-to-follow road map to every step in the recovery process, from the momentous decision to quit to the emotional, physical, and spiritual issues that arise along the way. Its comprehensive and effective advice speaks to people with addiction, their loved ones, and addiction professionals who need a proven, trusted resource and a supportive voice. This new edition features the revolutionary Recovery Zone System, which divides a life in recovery into three chronological zones and provides guidance on exactly what to do in each zone. First is the Red Zone, where the reader is encouraged to stop everything, activate their recovery and save their life. Next is the Yellow Zone, where the reader can begin to rebuild a life that was torn apart by addiction. Finally, the reader reaches the Green Zone, where they can enjoy a life of recovery and help others. And the Recovery Zone ReCheck is a simple and effective relapse prevention tool. The Recovery Zone System works hand-in-hand with the 12-step philosophy and all other recovery methods. The Recovery Book covers new knowledge about addiction mechanisms and neuroplasticity, explaining how alcohol and drugs alter the brain. The authors outline a simple daily practice, called TAMERS, that helps people to use those same processes to “remold their brains” around recovery, eventually making sobriety a routine way of life. Written by Al J. Mooney, M.D., a recovery activist who speaks internationally on recovery, and health journalists Catherine Dold and Howard Eisenberg, The Recovery Book covers all the latest in addiction science and recovery methods. In 26 chapters and over 600 pages, The Recovery Book tackles issues such as: Committing to Recovery: Identifying and accepting the problem; deciding to get sober. Treatment Options: Extensive information on current options and how to choose a program. AA and other 12-Step Fellowships: How to get involved in a mutual-support group. Addiction Science and Neuroplasticity: How alcohol and drugs alter pathways in the brain, and how to remold the brain around recovery. Relapse Prevention: The Recovery Zone ReCheck, a simple new technique to anticipate and avoid relapses. Rebuilding Your Life: How to handle relationships, socializing, work, education, and finances. Physical and Mental Health: Tips for getting healthy and handling common ailments. Pain Control: How to deal with pain in recovery and avoid a relapse if you need pain control for medical care. Family and Friends: How to help a loved one with addiction, and how to help yourself. Raising Substance-Free Kids: How to “addiction-proof” your child. The Epidemic of Prescription Drugs: Now a bigger problem than illegal drugs. The Recovery Book will help millions gain control of their mind, their body, their life, and their happiness.
