The business of business is business ). Book excerpt: Management of social issues in supply chain is increasingly becoming challenging and complex. The major challenges for a firm to counter social issues come from both internal and external stakeholders. Thus, firms adopt strategies which, while meeting the stakeholder demands also ensure performance improvements. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is adopted by the firms to address social and societal issues while achieving performance in their supply chains. Supplier development (SD) by the virtue of bringing performance improvement is a core element in implementing CSR. However, research at the intersection of CSR, Supply Chain Management (SCM) and supplier development rarely give insights into the interactions between economic and social performance in supply chains.

The main aim of this dissertation is to bring three different streams of literature (CSR, SCM and SD) and provide conceptual and empirical insights while investigating the role of SD as CSR in achieving performance improvements. Firstly, a conceptual framework based on the literature review is proposed providing more in-depth comprehension of CSR in supply chain. Secondly, based on the previous framework, a conceptual framework focusing on supplier development is proposed adding to the understanding of buyer-supplier relationships and its impact on performance outcomes. Finally empirical investigations into the Dairy supply chain in India using the constructs from these two frameworks, provide insights into the role of SD as CSR. Thus, this dissertation provides insights into the management of social issues in supply chains and makes valuable contributions at the intersection of CSR, SCM and SD.

Book excerpt: This paper provides a review of the theoretical and empirical literature on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Depending on whether an individual can be considered as selfish, or whether she has also social preferences, motives for CSR, can be explained in different ways. Furthermore, we explicitly highlight the influence of different Corporate Governance System on CSR as well as the relationship between firms' size and social commitment. Because it is difficult to distinguish between different theories in empirical studies, we argue that an experimental approach might be suitable to test theories of CSR.

Book excerpt: The Impact of Corporate Social Responsibility: Corporate Activities, the Environment and Society adds to the current debate on the societal-level impacts of corporate social responsibility (CSR). This edited volume offers conceptual and empirical contributions highlighting various dimensions of CSR impacts. What differentiates the book from others is that we examine the impact of CSR at the societal level, rather than focussing only on those at occur at the level of the firm. The book’s contributions present novel perspectives that comprise, among others, empirical analyses of CSR activities, accounts of impacts in various geographic locations, and state-of-the-art reviews of extant literature on the topic. The practical examples and theory-building presented here help us to better capture the societal impacts of contemporary CSR practice. This book will appeal to scholars and students as well as practitioners and policy makers interested in practical and theoretical aspects of CSR impacts at the societal-level. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following recent growth of ethical consumerism, customers and other stakeholders increasingly pressure organizations to be socially responsible and minimize their negative impact on the environment. Accordingly, a plethora of firms have integrated corporate social responsibility (CSR) at the center of their business strategies and actions. Whilst this has resulted in many firms meeting their broader responsibilities toward society and the environment, some firms have used CSR in a manipulative and insincere way. As stakeholders become aware of such misuse of CSR, largely thanks to the rapid evolution of information technologies, they start to penalize firms by spreading negative word of mouth about them, and specifically about their CSR knowledge, values, and actions. Now, more than ever before, stakeholders are increasingly critical and cautious in their assessments of firms’ CSR knowledge, values, and actions. On this background, this edited volume sheds light on different internal and external perspectives spanning CSR knowledge, values, and actions. It shares theoretical, practical, and case-based insights on the broader topic and can be of interest to researchers, academics, practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of CSR and business ethics, knowledge management, strategy, and marketing.

Book excerpt: Business schools, the media, the corporate sector, governments, and non-governmental organizations have all begun to pay more attention to issues of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in recent years. These issues encompass broad questions about the changing relationship between business, society and government, environmental issues, corporate governance, the social and ethical dimensions of management, globalization, stakeholder debates, shareholder and consumer activism, changing political systems and values, and the ways in which corporations can respond to new social imperatives. This Oxford Handbook is an authoritative review of the academic research that has both prompted, and responded to, these issues. Bringing together leading experts in the area, it provides clear thinking and new perspectives on CSR and the debates around it. The Handbook is divided into seven key sections: * Introduction, * Perspectives on CSR, * Critiques of CSR, * Actors and Drivers, * Managing CSR, * CSR in Global Context, * Future Perspectives and Conclusions.

The communication of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in international cosmetic companies in Austria is a topic that is not sufficiently studied in its entirety. Due to increasing pressure put on companies to take responsibility towards society and environment, sustainable communication is of high relevance. Therefore, this thesis addresses the question how corporate social responsibility in international operating cosmetic companies in Austria is communicated globally and locally. A focus is set on the comparison between conventional and natural cosmetics. This paper follows the qualitative research paradigm. The results, after having undergone a comprehensive literature analysis, were obtained by the means of interviews with a group of experts composed of CSR- and sustainability managers, communication managers and managing directors of the Austrian subsidiaries. The transcribed interviews were submitted to a qualitative-interpretive evaluation in accord with Meuser and Nagel (1991).The insights gained demonstrate a relative importance of CSR communications. Particular value is ascribed to communication efforts towards employees as well as all external stakeholders. After all, success of CSR communication is dependent on a companys authenticity in this field, in order to communicate a credible message both internally and externally.

Book excerpt: This book illustrates how CSR can be used as a tool to improve corporate governance in organizations and improve the relationship between business and society. Connecting corporate social responsibility (CSR) with corporate governance (CG) is a 21st century challenge, and the book argues that CSR and CG should be addressed together in synergy in the management literature. Linking these two crucial business functions, it describes the preconditions for successful integration and the tools for practical implementation. Volume 1 covers corporate governance from the perspective of CSR, where responsible and sustainable business is a common goal and the tasks are to create core values, business policy and organizational strategies.

Book excerpt: In the beginning of the 1960 s, pollution and immoral behaviour was common in the business world and as a reaction to this, an increased interest for socially beneficial activities occurred. Since then, large amount of literature and research has been conducted within the matter and the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has developed. Today, stakeholder theory is a common aspect when discussing CSR and some researchers argue that the stakeholders influence to what extent an organization engages within socially responsible activities. Yet, there is still an inquiry to identify what social responsibility really is and to de-fine it. Due to the augmented interest for CSR many large organizations engage in CSR activities. However, one industry where little research and literature has been conducted in the field of CSR is in the context of service organizations. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how Corporate Social Responsibility is defined and how it is exercised in the context of service organizations and also the importance of different stakeholders in this process.

While much debate continues on the content and efficacy of corporate social responsibility (CSR), the notion that corporations are accountable for the social and environmental consequences of their activities has become widely accepted in the worlds of business, government, and civil society. Global CSR frameworks such as the United Nations Global Compact and the Global Reporting Initiative include thousands of business participants across multiple countries and industries, attracting wide support from governments and civil society organizations. Corresponding to the rising global profile of CSR, scholarly attention to CSR has grown tremendously (Crouch and Maclean 2011; Haufler 2001; Hoffman 2001; Hoffman and Ventresca 2002; Lindgreen et al. 2012; May, Cheney, Roper 2007; Potoski and Prakash 2009; Prakash and Potoski 2006; Smith et al. 2010; Soule 2009; Utting and Marques 2010; Vogel 2005). Building on this literature, this volume examines two key issues in contemporary CSR activities"--
