The 1960s were a progressive decade, bringing many life changing events, especially for women. Women of the 1960s explores the experiences of teenagers, young career women, and those married with young children, especially those based outside of London and far from the hedonistic influences of the day. Much of the information included in this book comes from the surprisingly honest and generous contributions of the women themselves, ensuring that a wide range of experiences are brought to life like never before. Covering topics including life after school, career choices, life after work, eating in and out, teenagers, sex, marriage, fashion, finance, women’s liberation, and travel. These stories also cover the era’s current affairs, including the Cold War and the pervasive fear of nuclear attack. Fascinating and frank, Women of the 1960s provides a new perspective on one of the most pivotal decades in modern history.

Book excerpt: Spatial planning is at a crossroads, with government reform undermining the traditional vision of state-employed planners making decisions about urban development in a unified public interest. Nearly half of UK planners are now employed in the private sector, with complex inter-relations between the sectors including supplying outsourced services to local authorities struggling with centrally-imposed budget cuts. Drawing on new empirical data from a major research project, ‘Working in the Public Interest’, this book reveals what it’s like to be a UK planner in the early 21st century, and how the profession can fulfil its potential for the benefit of society and the environment.

Book Synopsis Makers of Democracy by : A. Ricardo López-Pedreros
Download or read book Makers of Democracy written by A. Ricardo López-Pedreros and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Makers of Democracy A. Ricardo López-Pedreros traces the ways in which a thriving middle class was understood to be a foundational marker of democracy in Colombia during the second half of the twentieth century. Drawing on a wide array of sources ranging from training manuals and oral histories to school and business archives, López-Pedreros shows how the Colombian middle class created a model of democracy based on free-market ideologies, private property rights, material inequality, and an emphasis on a masculine work culture. This model, which naturalized class and gender hierarchies, provided the groundwork for Colombia's later adoption of neoliberalism and inspired the emergence of alternate models of democracy and social hierarchies in the 1960s and 1970s that helped foment political radicalization. By highlighting the contested relationships between class, gender, economics, and politics, López-Pedreros theorizes democracy as a historically unstable practice that exacerbated multiple forms of domination, thereby prompting a rethinking of the formation of democracies throughout the Americas.
