Book Synopsis Dark Green Religion by : Bron Raymond Taylor
Download or read book Dark Green Religion written by Bron Raymond Taylor and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A love of green may be a human universal. Deepening the palette of green scholarship, Bron Taylor proves remarkably to be both an encyclopedist and a visionary."--Jonathan Benthall, author of Returning to Religion: Why a Secular Age is Haunted by Faith "This important book provides insight into how a profound sense of relation to nature offers many in the modern world a vehicle for attaining a spiritual wholeness akin to what has been historically associated with established religion. In this sense, Dark Green Religion offers both understanding and hope for a world struggling for meaning and purpose beyond the isolation of the material here and now."--Stephen Kellert, Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies "In this thought-provoking volume, Bron Taylor explores the seemingly boundless efforts by human beings to understand the nature of life and our place in the universe. Examining in depth the ways in which influential philosophers and naturalists have viewed this relationship, Taylor contributes to the further development of thought in this critically important area, where our depth of understanding will play a critical role in our survival."--Peter H. Raven, President, Missouri Botanical Garden "Carefully researched, strongly argued, originally conceived, and very well executed, this book is a vital contribution on a subject of immense religious, political, and environmental importance. It's also a great read."--Roger S. Gottlieb, author of A Greener Faith: Religious Environmentalism and our Planet's Future "A fascinating analysis of our emotional and spiritual relationship to nature. Whether you call it dark green religion or something else, Bron Taylor takes us through our spiritual relationship with our planet, its ecosystems and evolution, in an enlightened and completely undogmatic manner."--Dr. Claude Martin, Former Director General, World Wildlife Fund "An excellent collection of guideposts for perplexed students and scholars about the relationships of nature religions, spirituality, animism, pantheism, deep ecology, Gaia, and land ethics--and for the environmentalist seeking to make the world a better place through green religion as a social force."--Fikret Berkes, author of Sacred Ecology: Traditional Ecological Knowledge and Resource Management "Dark Green Religion shows conclusively how nature has inspired a growing religious movement on the planet, contesting the long reign of many older faiths. Taylor expertly guides us through an astonishing array of thinkers, past and present, who have embraced, in part or whole, the new religion. I was thoroughly convinced that this movement has indeed become a major force on Earth, with great potential consequences for our environmental ethics."--Donald Worster, University of Kansas "In this exceptionally interesting and informative book, Bron Taylor has harvested the fruits of years of pioneering research in what amounts to a new field in religious studies: the study of how religious/spiritual themes show up in the work of people concerned about nature in many diverse ways. Taylor persuasively argues that appreciation of nature's sacred or spiritual dimension both informs and motivates the work of individuals ranging from radical environmentalists and surfers, to eco-tourism leaders and museum curators. I highly recommend this book for everyone interested learning more about the surprising extent to which religious/spiritual influences many of those who work to protect, to exhibit, or to represent the natural world."--Michael E. Zimmerman, Director, Center for Humanities and the Arts, University of Colorado at Boulder

Book excerpt: Alchemy has been discussed for millennia and many are the texts that one can consult, all complex, occult, and suggesting experiments that are difficult to implement. Tradition handed down the image of the alchemist as a solitary researcher who, surrounded by alembics and distillers tries to turn lead into gold, manipulating toad tails, bat wings and other strange elements. His quest, a metaphor for human evolution. But centuries pass, times change and disciplines and the ways to achieve goals are transformed, too. The alchemical laboratory, full of bottles, retorts and dusty tomes, jealously protected from the light and the curiosity of the uninitiated is no longer needed. We are in the Age of Aquarius and the alchemical laboratory is us. We are in the Age of Aquarius and the alchemical laboratory is us. Everyone is the Alchemist at work, the laboratory and the element that gradually changes and becomes the result of the Great Work. All at the same time. Falco Tarassaco’s research of redefines the paradigm of alchemy, bringing it up to date and making it accessible to men and women of today. Book Synopsis The Illusion of Will, Self, and Time by : Jonathan Bricklin
Download or read book The Illusion of Will, Self, and Time written by Jonathan Bricklin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discusses how William James’s work suggests a world without will, self, or time and how research supports this perspective. A Seminary Co-op Notable Book of 2016 William James is often considered a scientist compromised by his advocacy of mysticism and parapsychology. Jonathan Bricklin argues James can also be viewed as a mystic compromised by his commitment to common sense. James wanted to believe in will, self, and time, but his deepest insights suggested otherwise. “Is consciousness already there waiting to be uncovered and is it a veridical revelation of reality?” James asked shortly before his death in 1910. A century after his death, research from neuroscience, physics, psychology, and parapsychology is making the case, both theoretically and experimentally, that answers James’s question in the affirmative. By separating what James passionately wanted to believe, based on common sense, from what his insights and researches led him to believe, Bricklin shows how James himself laid the groundwork for this more challenging view of existence. The non-reality of will, self, and time is consistent with James’s psychology of volition, his epistemology of self, and his belief that Newtonian, objective, even-flowing time does not exist. Jonathan Bricklin is a Program Director at the New York Open Center and the editor of Sciousness.
Book Synopsis Hoodoo For Beginners: An Introduction to African American Folk Magic by : Clara Robinson
Download or read book Hoodoo For Beginners: An Introduction to African American Folk Magic written by Clara Robinson and published by Creek Ridge Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-14 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many benefits to the practice of hoodoo and how it is used to influence the human condition As much as it has been used in popular culture as a horror aesthetic, it has also in recent years become a light, illuminating the living practice of African American folk religion. Hoodoo itself developed as a combination of beliefs from different African cultures. African slaves united their beliefs and cultures after being brought to America in an attempt to go back to their own roots, to rekindle the flame of their home cultures, and thus hoodoo was born. Hoodoo was used as both a spiritual and physical tool for survival. African slaves were very unlikely to get proper medical attention, and so they had to look after their own with the use of the botanical knowledge that they had at their disposal in order to keep themselves balanced and healthy. Traditional hoodoo practices were preserved orally by those enslaved in order to ensure that practices were not lost, as many of those enslaved did not always have many earthly possessions. These practices have survived to the present day, despite the belief that it is used only in late seventeenth-century midnight seances.
