D. 250 to 1616. Much of it, consequently, is occupied with the history of the principles and doctrines now embraced by the denomination, rather than by the his tory of Congregationalists themselves. Though as a de nomination, we had no distinctive, organized existence um til near the close of the sixteenth century yet, inasmuch as some of our denominational peculiarities have always found advocates and friends, since the days of the apostles, - a very imperfect notion could be formed of our history, if these facts were entirely overlooked. But, in order to bring them out, it has been necessary to travel over a very extensive field of observation, and to introduce more of gen eral history than, at first thought, may seem strictly proper in a denominational work. The sources whence this history has been drawn, will sufficiently appear by reference to the margin. Original authorities have been appealed to whenever they have been within my reach and when they have not, the defect has been, in part at least, supplied, by comparing several second-hand authorities, and when it was possible, men of different views and habits of thought. Down to A. D. 1700, all proof-sheets went to the British Museum and the Bodleian, to have their press-marks inserted; a convenience which I am sure will be appreciated by those who know by experience how long one - especially if on the track of an anonymous volume may wander through huge folio catalogues without. Finding the trail. Down to within one hundred years also, this list has been carefully com pared with the Yale and Harvard shelves. It should be observed, however, that while - accidents excepted the presence of any given book in the libraries named as having it, may be relied on, it is never certain that it may not also be found in collee tions to which it has failed to be credited. This, because new titles have often been inserted in the last proofs, when it was too late to send to England, or elsewhere, to ascertain whether they were in possession there or not. Nor in nearing our own time has it been felt to be so important to indicate the locality of volumes presumably common. I have been especially indebted in that department of the subject to which it is devoted, to Dr. Ezra Abbot's Literature of t/ze Doctrine ofa Future Life, published as an appendix to Rev. W. R. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Congregationalism: And Memorials of the Churches, of Our Order in Suffolk More than forty years have elapsed since John Browne, of Wrentham, issued his truly great book on "The History of Congregationalism in Suffolk and Norfolk." During these years great and important changes have taken place in all our churches, and a modern edition of this work has been long overdue. As Mr. Browne's book owed its origin to the generosity of Mr.D. H.Goddard, the present work owes its origin to the generosity of Mr. H. Fairfax Harwood, of Tuddenham Hall, Ipswich. When Mr. Harwood suggested a re-issue of this history, and asked me to undertake it, it was with great reluctance and diffidence that I consented; I felt then, as I feel now, that others could have done the work much more efficiently than I could. At the same time, realising the importance and value of the work, I could not refuse; and so, conscious of many defects, I faced the task. I need hardly say that this book is largely an example of building upon another man's foundation. But for the devoted labours of John Browne this work had never seen the light. In perusing the original volume nothing has impressed me more than the immense labour and patient research devoted to it. In that work Mr. Browne has laid, not only the churches of Suffolk and Norfolk, but Congregationalism throughout the country under a vast debt of gratitude. In carrying out the purpose I had in my mind of bringing this work up to date, I found materials accumulating so rapidly that, if the volume was to be kept within reasonable limits, much of the original, not strictly relevant, would have to be omitted. Accordingly I have re-written the whole, omitting the Norfolk section, and that relating to the Baptist churches, together with some of the footnotes that seemed to me unnecessary.
