Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contemporary human predicament is marked by some absurd paradoxes. By 1980 the five-fold increase in the price of crude oil in real terms since 1972 had resulted in an annual expenditure of $50 million for oil imports by developing countries. The World Bank, concerned about the considerable strain on the balance of payment of oil importing developing countries, initiated a modest $13 billion program of loans for the development of energy resources over the five-year period 1981-1985. Yet, according to SIPRI, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, in 1980 the Third World spent $80 billion on defense. The ten-year investment schedule for an expanded energy program in the oil importing developing countries, which the World Bank considers desirable and feasible, would require $450 to $500 billion (in 1980 dollars). According to SIPRI, the world spent $500 billion in 1980 alone on defense. Obviously, the energy crisis is not due to an absolute lack of resources but to their misallocation. A modest transfer of ten percent of global defense expenditures--which would not leave any nation at the mercy of its enemies--to an energy resources development fund would advance considerably the modernization of the Third World and also reduce international tensions caused by the sharpening competition for natural resources.

Book Synopsis From Asia-Pacific to Indo-Pacific by : Robert G. Patman
Download or read book From Asia-Pacific to Indo-Pacific written by Robert G. Patman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-24 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a unique team of academics and practitioners to analyse interests, institutions, and issues affecting and affected by the transition from Asia-Pacific to Indo-Pacific. The Indo-Pacific has emerged as the world’s economic and strategic centre of gravity, in which established and rising powers compete with each other. As a strategic space, the Indo-Pacific reflects the rise of geo-political and geo-economic designs and dynamics which have come to shape the region in the early twenty-first century. These new dynamics contrast with the (neo-)liberal ideas and the seemingly increasing globalisation for which the once dominant ‘Asia-Pacific’ regional label stood.

Download or read book Situating Women written by Nicole George and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the time of decolonisation in Fiji, women’s organisations have navigated a complex political terrain. While they have stayed true to the aim of advancing women’s status, their work has been buffeted by national political upheavals and changing global and regional directions in development policy-making. This book documents how women activists have understood and responded to these challenges. It is the first book to write women into Fiji’s postcolonial history, providing a detailed historical account of that country’s gender politics across four tumultuous decades. It is also the first to examine the ‘situated’ nature of gender advocacy in the Pacific Islands more broadly. It does this by analysing trends in activity, from women’s radical and provocative activism of the 1960s to a more self-evaluative and reflexive mood of engagement in later decades, showing how interplaying global and local factors can shape women’s understandings of gender justice and their pursuit of that goal.
Book Synopsis Mainstreaming Gender, Democratizing the State by : Shirin Rai
Download or read book Mainstreaming Gender, Democratizing the State written by Shirin Rai and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mainstreaming Gender, Democratizing the State" reflects the commitment of the United Nations to promote mechanisms that aim to achieve equality between women and men. It identifies institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women including national machineries as one of twelve critical areas of concern. National machineries are the primary institutional mechanism entrusted with the implementation of the strategic objectives contained in the goals for equity set by the United Nations. The mandate of these national institutions has evolved from promoting women-specific projects to ensuring that equality concerns are integrated into all government legislation, policy, programs, and budgetary processes. National machineries face serious constraints in fulfilling their mandate including; inadequate financial and human resources, relatively powerless locations within government structures, and insufficient linkage with civil societies. This volume illustrates that the ability of UN-member states to subscribe to the agenda of equality between women and men has been significantly enhanced by the creation of these national-level institutions. National machineries for the advancement of women were initially conceived at the World Conference on the International Women's Year held in Mexico City in 1975 and since then have been considered systematically by world conferences on women in Copenhagen (1980), Nairobi (1985), and Beijing (1995), as well as the sessions of the Commission on the Status of Women. The twenty-third special session of the General Assembly in Beijing reiterated the significant role that national machineries play in promoting equality between women and men, gender mainstreaming, and monitoring of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action as well as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. There has been a long-standing need for a volume to bring together discussions on theory and practice as well as comparative analysis and in-depth case studies of national machineries; this book responds to that need.
