Book Synopsis Music in Worship by : Thomas Craig Alexander
Download or read book Music in Worship written by Thomas Craig Alexander and published by . This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Bible justify instrumental music for Christian worship? In 2006, advocates for the use of instrumental music in worship presented a three-part series titled "The Both/And Church," suggesting that people should read old texts in fresh, new ways. These advocates proposed that their understanding of biblical texts justifies instruments in church worship. Since that time, some churches have followed their lead.Ironically, this misreading of the relevant biblical texts is not new. The arguments made by these proponents are the arguments that have been made since the late 1800s among advocates of instrumental music in worship.Thomas Alexander answers these "new" arguments in a caring, biblical way in Music in Worship. He carefully evaluates each of the reasons given by "both/and church" proponents and shows that the facts about what God wants in worship have not changed - human attitudes have.

Book Synopsis Understanding Four Views on Baptism by : Zondervan,
Download or read book Understanding Four Views on Baptism written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gain an understanding of baptism from four main traditional perspectives. Of all the sacraments, the practice of baptism is often the most disputed. Christians hold different views of its exact significance, who should receive baptism and how old they need to be, the practice of rebaptism, and baptism as a requirement for church membership. In Understanding Four Views on Baptism, four historic views on baptism are considered in depth: Baptist view: baptism of the professing regenerate by immersion (presented by Thomas J. Nettles) Reformed view: infant baptism of children of the covenant (presented by Richard Pratt Jr.) Lutheran view: infant baptism by sprinkling as a regenerative act (presented by Robert Kolb) Church of Christ view: believers' baptism on the occasion of regeneration by immersion (presented by John Castelein) Each view is presented by its proponent, then critiqued and defended in dialogue with the book's other contributors. Here is an ideal setting in which you can consider the strengths and weaknesses of each stance and arrive at your own informed conclusion. The Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.
Book Synopsis A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church by : Everett Ferguson
Download or read book A Cappella Music in the Public Worship of the Church written by Everett Ferguson and published by Victor Vadney. This book was released on 2013 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a methodology that I have found helpful in dealing with other topics. This procedure is to assemble the New Testament texts on the topic and interpret them, then check this interpretation against usage in early Christian literature outside the New Testament, and finally to examine the doctrinal considerations to determine if the interpretation rests on solid biblical theology. Rather than gathering quotations from secondary literature, my approach is to read the source documents in the original and present the texts in their context. At the time of first edition of the book, mine was the fullest collection of historical statements on early church music readily available. Other studies since that time are largely supportive of the historical facts presented in my work, even if the authors do not consider the evidence normative for today. My conclusion is that the practice of unaccompanied congregational singing rests on good biblical, historical and doctrinal grounds.
