Book Synopsis Ecology of Freshwater and Estuarine Wetlands by : Darold P. Batzer
Download or read book Ecology of Freshwater and Estuarine Wetlands written by Darold P. Batzer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-12-06 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of this important and authoritative survey provides students and researchers with up-to-date and accessible information about the ecology of freshwater and estuarine wetlands. Prominent scholars help students understand both general concepts of different wetland types as well as complex topics related to these dynamic physical environments. Careful syntheses review wetland soils, hydrology, and geomorphology; abiotic constraints for wetland plants and animals; microbial ecology and biogeochemistry; development of wetland plant communities; wetland animal ecology; and carbon dynamics and ecosystem processes. In addition, contributors document wetland regulation, policy, and assessment in the US and provide a clear roadmap for adaptive management and restoration of wetlands. New material also includes an expanded review of the consequences for wetlands in a changing global environment. Ideally suited for wetlands ecology courses, Ecology of Freshwater and Estuarine Wetlands, Second Edition, includes updated content, enhanced images (many in color), and innovative pedagogical elements that guide students and interested readers through the current state of our wetlands.

The treatment provides dichotomous keys and botanical descriptions to facilitate identification of all included taxa. Illustrations are also provided for selected species. Geographical ranges and habitat preferences are described for each species, and a map is provided for each plant showing its documented occurrences by counties within the region. Additional information provided with species descriptions includes common name(s), flowering/fruiting periods, and nomenclatural synonyms. A glossary of botanical terms is also provided.

Book Synopsis Wetlands: Ecosystem Services, Restoration and Wise Use by : Shuqing An
Download or read book Wetlands: Ecosystem Services, Restoration and Wise Use written by Shuqing An and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores major wetland ecosystem services, such as climate cooling and water quality improvement, and discusses the recent wetland conservation and restoration activities in China and neighboring countries. The role of wetlands in either cooling or warming the climate is analyzed as the net balance between carbon sequestration and emissions of methane and nitrous oxide. Wetlands start off having a net warming effect on the climate but in time switch to net cooling. Further, they remove 40% of the N and P from run-off and groundwater flow in agricultural areas, but wetlands need to amount to 10% of the total catchment area to make a difference. Reflecting on the recent large investment in wetland ecological studies in China and neighboring countries, the book addresses invasive species in coastal wetlands as well as the protection and wise use of tidal flats around the Yellow Sea. It also presents promising regional case studies on wetland restoration. The book is intended for academics, students and practitioners in the field of wetland ecology, management and restoration, as well as consultants and professionals working in conservation, wise use and environmental policy.
Book Synopsis Southern Forested Wetlands by : Michael G. Messina
Download or read book Southern Forested Wetlands written by Michael G. Messina and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-18 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1998, Southern Forested Wetlands is an up to date, one source compendium of current knowledge on the wetland ecology of America’s southern forests. This book presents both the ecological and management aspects of these important ecosystems. The book was compiled by members of the Consortium for Research on southern forested wetlands, and was a collaboration of those working to conserve, study, and manage these economically and environmentally influential areas. The book covers geographic ranges from West Virginia to Florida, to Texas and inland north to Arkansas and Tennessee. It also addresses specific wetland types, including deep-water swamps, major and minor alluvial flood plains, pocosins and Carolina bays, mountain fens, pond cypress swamps, flatwoods wetlands, and mangroves.

Download or read book Five Hydrologic Studies written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Center for Forested Wetlands Research has conducted or cooperated in studies designed to improve understanding of fundamental hydrologic and biogeochemical processes that link aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Five of these studies are discussed here. The first is based on observations made on long-term experimental watersheds established in the 1960s on the Forest Service Santee Experimental Forest in South Carolina. It quantifies the soil moisture dynamics, flow regimes, and water chemistry of low-gradient forested wetlands. The second study is being conducted in cooperation with North Carolina State University. It is a long-term project aimed at quantifying the effects of various water management and silvicultural management practices on hydrology and water quality at the Weyerhaeuser Company's managed pine forest in Carteret County, North Carolina. The third study is a long-term ecosystem study on MeadWestvaco's Coosawhatchie River bottomland hardwood site in South Carolina. It addresses questions related to public concerns about the need for protection, restoration, and sustainable management of forested wetlands. The fourth study, which was conducted between 1997 and 2000, examined the hydrology and water quality of intensively managed short-rotation woody crop plantations on International Paper's Trice experimental forest in the upper Coastal Plain of South Carolina. A fifth study was conducted between 1996 and 2004 at MeadWestvaco's Carolina bay site in the South Carolina upper Coastal Plain; it assessed the surface-water and ground-water interactions between Carolina bays and their surrounding uplands. Recommendations are provided for using knowledge gained through these and other studies as a basis for expanding needed hydrologic research with collaborators to address four major areas of water-related issues in the Southeast."--P. Book Synopsis Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair by : Thomas R. Biebighauser
Download or read book Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair written by Thomas R. Biebighauser and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wetlands are a vital part of the landscape and ecology of the United States, providing food and shelter for species ranging from the beautiful wood duck to the tiny fairy shrimp. These areas provide critical habitat for fish and wildlife, protect communities from flooding, and recharge groundwater supplies—yet they continue to be destroyed at an alarming rate. A detailed analysis of wetlands management, Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair is a comprehensive guide to the past, present, and future of wetland recovery in the United States. The book includes a historical overview of wetland destruction and repair over the past two hundred years and also serves as a unique resource for anyone, from novice to engineer, interested in the process of wetland restoration. Author Thomas R. Biebighauser draws from his own vast experience in building and repairing more than 950 wetlands across North America. Included are numerous photographs and case studies that highlight successes of past projects. Detailed, step-by-step instructions guide the reader through the planning and implementation of each restoration action. Biebighauser also provides a number of effective strategies for initiating and improving funding for wetlands programs. Wetland Drainage, Restoration, and Repair is essential reading for all who care about and for these important ecosystems.

The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.
